If you're in Hamburg and love great beer, amazing food, and a warm, inviting atmosphere, Altes Mädchen – Ratsherrn Braugasthaus is an absolute must-visit! The beer selection is outstanding. The staff is super knowledgeable and happy to recommend the perfect pairing for your meal. The menu is packed with delicious, hearty dishes made with top-quality ingredients. Their bread is a must! The vibe of the place is also worth mentioning—cozy yet spacious, with a mix of rustic charm and modern brewery coolness. Overall, Altes Mädchen delivers on every level: amazing beer, excellent food, friendly service, and a fantastic ambiance. If you’re in Hamburg, do yourself a favor and stop by—you won’t be disappointed!

Extremely poor experience. Made a special journey from Hamburg centre to come to this brewery taproom. The place is busy, but still plenty of seats available. The man wanted me to sit on the most uncomfortable metal stool left next to the bar - I refused, he said that's all there is, and I walked out. Very poor. Do not recommend wasting your time.

One of the best diner I've experienced in Hamburg so far. Athmosphere is calm and relaxing, empleyees are helpful and kind. There are so many beer options and you will difficultly choose yours. Helles was my favourite one. We ate cheeseburger and fish & chips. Burger was delicious. French fries were crunchy and tasted good. But I need to tell extra good for fish & chips. Crunchiness of the fish was perfect and meat was juicy enough and delicious. They have a big parking lot outside. Booking before going is adviced.

Especially when it was snowing, it was a great atmosphere. They have a great beer bar and restaurant with very good flavors. They also make their own bread. There is quality music and beautifully decorated spaces. The winter garden and bar are magnificent. I highly recommend it.

The service was very bad, the facility was cold and the prices were really high. I would not return to this bar, because I think there are better ones

We went here without any reservations and the staffs were very kind to give us the table!! We were super thrilled to see their huge ambiance and good vibes all around!! They also had terrace seating that was quite nice!! So coming to drinks and food, I think they have wide variety of beer options to choose from!! Even the beer tasters were very very impressive and I happened to also taste their fruity Belgian beer which was top notch! I like the detailing in their menu of how they have paired up different food with kinds of beer that would go well with them! I didn’t try a vegetarian option for food (Spinach Semmelknödeln) and it was really nice and in good portion! My friends also tried the same but with pork and they can vouch for the amazing taste as well! I did notice that the staffs left us unattended for quite sometime probably because it was a Saturday evening and completely rush hour!! All in all a great experience in Hamburg!

Travelled to have an early dinner here in the midst of the rain. Food was not bad. The bun that came with the soup was a little disappointing, it came cold. Otherwise it would have been great. Beer sampling was interesting too! Dessert wasnt too bad.

Google
Special brewery with various beers. You can taste 5 beers (0,1l) for € 8,90. The steak didn’t come medium but almost rare. Nevertheless is was tasty. The service was very friendly although the place was crowded.

Yelp
This place is huge! Sat outside and enjoyed some beers and food. We tried the Currywurst and the burger and both were pretty good, albeit nothing amazing. We tried quite a few different beers, and all were great! I think you can't go wrong with any beer here. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
My friend and I grabbed Hanoi Deli Rathaus for lunch one day. Service was fast and there were plenty of open tables. Extensive drink menu but we stuck with water. They have a huge menu with something on it for everyone. We shared a few different sushi rolls and 1 tempura roll. Everything came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. Reasonably priced. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The beers were spectacular. It's a really nice facility, a ton of potential. The food looked great, and I wanted some but the menu was not available in English and I didn't feel like playing the pointing game. So a deduction in star. One of the bartenders was a little gruff with me when I asked if he spoke English and he sluffed me off to another one of the staff that spoke better. (another minus star) I get it I am a tourist, but if more of the staff spoke more English, and you had English menus this place would be a gold-mine. Has all the right ingredients for success, just needs to cater a little more toward tourists.

Yelp
The Altes Mädchen came highly recommended. Ample parking available, but it wasn't immediately where to turn in as it was stacked away behind other businesses. When entering we weren't acknowledged whatsoever and had to ask to be given a table (we had reservations). Food & beverage order was taken quickly, appetizers and drinks arrived quickly. Then we sat and waited for over an hour, only to find out that our second course wasn't sent to the kitchen. Nobody checked on our table for an hour. Once I elevated my concern, our food arrived quickly and it was absolutely amazing! We immediately placed the dessert order as well, since we had theatre tickets and couldn't afford a further delay.

Yelp
Simpel, lecker, coole Atmosphäre. Im Service haben wir gemischte Erfahrungen, sind aber trotzdem sehr gerne immer wieder da.

Yelp
Went here early on a Friday while I was in Hamburg. This place gets mentioned in a lot of places to go for craft beer while in Hamburg, but I was not impressed. First of all, this is related to the Ratsherrn Brewing company. You can go to the attached store and get a lot of the Ratsherrn beers, and I guess that's cool, but I thought it would be nice if you could actually get the beer at the bar. They didn't even appear to stock the bottles they had in the store, and Ratsherrn makes some nice beers. I had a couple of other beers that were unique, but the service is what gets me here. Bartender guy outside was kind of snobby even though I spoke German to him and when I ordered a beer that was not immediately on tap outside (but on tap inside), it took 10 minutes to get at a time where there weren't a lot of customers. The bartender was trying to play a practical joke on a co-worker inside, so I guess the priority really isn't customer service. I understand about giving change so you give a tip, but giving change on a 20-Euro note in all 50 cent pieces on a 6-Euro beer is kind of a jerk move. I'm still, to this day, trying to figure out what I did that pissed this guy off. I love everything the Sternschanze stands for, so maybe he just dislikes Americans. It's a shame. It's a nice place, but the service needs to improve.

Yelp
Let's start off with the positives. This place is absolutely beautiful inside. Lots of details that someone took a lot of time to pick out and I really appreciate that. Also, their fries (or chips) served with their burger and their fish and chips were pretty tasty. My husband said the burger was good (he just wished he hadn't asked for bacon because that's all he could taste on it). That is kinda where the positives end. There is absolutely no flow to the inside of the restaurant so when you walk in, you have no idea if you seat yourself or if you go to another area of restaurant to be sat (simple and cheap solution: chalkboard sign to explain). My husband got one of their two tasting trays and felt meh about all of them (his hopes weren't high for variety of beer so not a super letdown). My fish in the fish & chips I got was overcooked and the breading was so thick, it made it hard to enjoy. The service was pretty terrible and is probably due to the layout of the restaurant being absolutely chaotic. I'm honestly a little surprised that this place has been open for a few years because there are simple things that can be changed to make this a great place instead of just mediocre, but maybe they know they will get business either way so what's the point? Will we be back? Probably to this area, yes, because other restaurants/bars around it looked neat but probably not to this place. Too many other good places to check out in Hamburg.

Yelp
When it's your first time to Hamburg and Germany, you go to a beirgarten, and Madchens is a great place to start your vacation off. It's a bit difficult to find as it's inside a plaza like area, and service was very much a hands off approach. After being shown their waiting area where you can chat around a fire over some beer, they told us we would have to find our own table. We had a local with us, so this is just the norm. Fortunately we were able to get seats for three, sharing a table with another couple in relatively short order. The place was really busy for a Tuesday night though. This place is quite hip with a bakery in the front and an extensive selection of beer and tasty vittles. We got the three of sausage, whole roast duck and an assortment of German sides. The roast duck was delicious and went well with the potatoes and cabbage that we got. Very sharable for three. The beer I had was also great.

Yelp
Food was good. Had the goulash and some burgers. Very tasty. The beer was watery and under-carbonated. We tried multiple beers of different varieties. It was the worst beer I've ever had in Germany. It's a shame. The space was cool. Service was good.

Yelp
I came here yesterday. Couldn't belive the waitress told me they just opened couple months ago. It was hella packed and all the people had this "Yo what's up" attitude which attracks a lot of young people. It's kinda hard to find that place if you don't know there is a restaurant inside. But I would recommend everyone to go there. The interior design is great, food is great as well. And it totally reflects the huge variety of different beers. The first thing what we saw when we came in was.... BEER BEER BEER... and it taste good ;) So... check this place out. Good for drinking at night as well.

Yelp
We came to this brewery because we heard they had an amazing selection of beer from around the world, including their own. It is a huge, new space in the historic brick building lining the Sternschanze S-Bahn stop. Beautiful decor, one can see that a lot of time and money was spent planning and building this place, but it was not atmospherically comfortable. Maybe because this place only opened a few weeks ago and the population had not truly discovered it yet, but it felt empty on a saturday night. The beer: interesting selection, but from the tap pretty limited. For a nice place to have a beer with friends this place is perfect, but dont expect you will be super surprised by a new beer.

Yelp
Exceptional craft beer and chef driven cuisine. My vegetarian lasagna was fresh and hearty, full of thick cuts of portabella, sunchoke, tomatoes, diced carrots and loads of spinach. The accompanying pesto of sundried tomato with garlic and olive oil was the perfect punch of acidity. Washed down with an IPA... lunch done right. My husband enjoyed his burger with fries plus IPA and Golden Strong. Our daughter's pasta bolognese was a generous portion of proper fuel for walking through Hamburg. Service is friendly and helpful and was so kind to translate the menu for us. We will absolutely be back.

Yelp
Crappy service. We had to wait too long to get a beer, and when we got the beer, we still had not recieved a food menu. A place with unfulfilled potential. Could be really good though!

Yelp
Lots of beer and a cool atmosphere but I didn't order by well. I ordered the bbq sandwich which was served cold with some type of bbq sauce that seemed more like a Heinz variety of sauces. Overall, I liked this place really very chill and they have homemade bread. I'd recommend for a afterwork hangout or a big group dinner. They have over 200 beers either on tap or in bottles.

Yelp
This is such a sick bar. The decor is stylish and beautiful. If I had a bar, this is exactly how I would decorate it. I stopped by to get their beer sampler (which came on a mermaid cutting board); amazing I know, and I can't wait to come back again. The place was PACKED. There were literally two chairs left at the bar to sit, so I would say come early or make a reservation if you want to sit somewhere. The crowd was all ages and the vibe was down to earth. I will be back! Maybe even tonight... Oh the beers were delicious too.

Yelp
Since I've spend many afternoons / evenings at this place, always having a good time (and good beer of course), I've decided to celebrate my anniversary there. I called the restaurant in advance to book a table for us and was assured it would be a "nice" table with "birthday decorations". At the end we had to find our own table...?! Unfortunately almost all the Food is terrible (except the "Brotkorb"). Almost all of us were disappointed and we had to return 3 of 5 dishes right away. It's all about quantity and not quality of food (probably because they have many one time / touristy customers). Also the staff was pretty slow and didn't pay much attention this time. Better luck next time... I guess...

Yelp
The brewery comes in a contemporary but cozy design, travelers might know from metropolises like London, Stockholm or Amsterdam. The venue is located in an old factory building close to Hamburg's nightlife hub Schanzenviertel. The menu contains small plates (if you are hungry order 4-5 dishes, the sausages are good) and large plates (no appetizers recommended). The homemade bread they offer is only partially recommendable. For example was the ciabatta roll from the BBQ Steak Sandwich far too chewy and hard to cut. We didn't order the "Abendbrot" varieties but they looked delicious and might be a choice during our next visit. The homemade brews were decent and contained besides typical German pilsner and hefeweizen brews that were based on common US varieties such as amber and ipa. The choice of international microbrews and non-alcoholic bottled beer was great and spoils you with choice. The staff was super attentive and knowledgeable about the beer selection. If you love a cosmopolitan and trendy atmosphere and good beer Altes Maedchen should be on your restaurant list visiting Hamburg. + trendy restaurant w own brews + wide selection of international microbrews and non-alcoholic beers + attentive and knowledgeable staff - outdoor patio is a smoking area Average entrée: EUR 15-20. Credit cards accepted.

Yelp
Yes, I am a fan! Cool place, nice looking place, but oh, crowded indeed. A little busy for the working bees, but almost everything went pretty smooth for us. The beer took a bit to arrive at the table, but should be expected. Luckily we sat right with the bar, so we were able to order/and get our beers more rapidly than others (I guess). We went for some of the tap beers, a sampler and some bottled beers! Nice for a beergeek as myself. They have food as well, looked pretty good, but we arrived a little too late (kitchen had already closed), so were not able to give it a go. Would go back if ever back in Hamburg!

Yelp
Good but not amazing. Very impressive inside and has the look and feel of a grand craft beer bar like Stone Brewery in San Diego but unfortunately it lacks the customer service or range of beers to match. This place is good but not amazing.

Yelp
Great place to hang out and meet local people... and drink locally made beers if you are into it. Great ambiance. However, too loud for business meeting. Food was decent but not extraordinary.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about that one. In fact, if I had done that review on the day I may have scored it 2 stars. I guess it's down to a high level of expectations that was built up over 3 days in Hamburg without having managed to convince 12 other Mancunians to check it out before. It was sold as THE beer Mecca in hamburg. And to be fair, it definitely is. That is the only place we visited or heard about where you can get other beers than the classic German offering. Thing is it's also easily twice or three-times as expensive as anywhere else, unless you buy their own home brew Ratsheen which is ok but frankly there are a thousand breweries more interesting than them. The place is not that easy to find, tucked inside an old industrial complex but it makes for a very nice location and the decor inside is very modern and current: wood and tiles, metal features, large and breazy...very scandinavian. We went to order at the bar (British style) and that was a bad idea. The poor bloke couldn't count, mixed up all the beers and took foorreeeeeeeeevveeer to serve us, it was frankly ridiculous. If he'd told us to just go and sit it would have been simpler I guess but it wouldn't have been different if we'd sat at the bar. The food looked quite good, and the atmosphere is very relaxed and relatively quiet considering the size of the place. But the sheer price of the beers is off-putting. Anything other than Ratsheen count a minimum of 5€ for a small bottle and up to 7-8€ for pints of beers that you would pay £4 in the UK. I am sure some will see that as underserved winghing...might be. But I had a better time enjoying Dunkel weisse in places with more soul the rest of the weekend. I will definitely give it another go though, save up a bit of cash and try and enjoy the full experience as maybe I was a bit moody that day.

Yelp
Pros: Absolutely *excellent* bottled beer selection, with beers from all over the world as well as a tasting flight from the local brewery. Bartenders who absolutely know their stuff when it comes to beer and can make recommendations, and beers are served in the correct glasses and at the correct temperatures. An attractive, well-lit, well-decorated space. Excellent shop next door run by the same people, for buying beers to take home (NOT cheaply, though). Convenient to the Sternschanze station, for optimal stumbling home. Cons: Not as many beers on tap as I'd hope for. Insanely crowded, every time we've been there, which means it can take a long time to get a server's attention. Possibly understaffed? Recommendations are a must. The seating isn't very comfortable, and the tables are oddly spaced - you always feel like you're in the way of the staff and of other patrons. The food is, frankly, just not very good. Our party had the best luck with the German dishes, not the American ones (which included a *very* disappointing pulled pork sandwich).

Yelp
Benn there once. Great place - really lovely. The courtyard is great, especially in summer. Been there at noon at a workday - so almost nobody was there. Great beer menu, food is good but pricey. Service is quick, but I was one of 5 guests so hard to judge.
google avatar

Erik R.

Yelp
Very very huge disappointment. We read about the place and expected to find excellent local organic food and beer of high quality. We had a Tatar for the starter - it was served on bread that was from the day before yesterday - impossible to chew. Then we ordered a cheese and meet platter - expecting that the German tradition would for these two things would give us a delightful meals but - the quality was the same as you would find in the LIDL around the corner. The local brewed beers was under the quality of most other micro breweries around the world - take a wurst and a Pilsner at the Hafenknipe and you will get a better experience. Waiters were bad too - not even helping guests to find a empty seat.

Yelp
This was an OK bar a couple of month ago, now its not. Every time I try to order a beer from the menu they don't have it. Then the substitute they offer is a similar style but still is not that close to the beer I wanted. The service is terrible. They are too busy being buddy buddy to taking care of their customers. The bread is good, but pricey. The interior is very nice, which is a shame. At least you have something to look at while you wait to get your empty beer refilled. Avoid this bar and just go grab a couple of beer in the shop next door.

Paula G.

Yelp
The food was okay, the beer was good but our waiter was rude and pretentious. He reminded me of waiters twenty years ago who acted like they were only waiting tables while writing the next great novel. He gave four people one menu and then was annoyed when we were not ready to order. He slammed a beer in front of me to show his chagrin at being kept waiting. Everyone else we have met in Hamburg including other wait staff have been kind and helpful. This youngish man isn't doing his employer any favors with his boorish attitude.
google avatar

Maciej G.

Yelp
The place looks really nice and calm. However the food is terrible - my schnitzel tasted really bad. Additionally prices are taken from outer space. As long as the most important aspect of this kind of places should be a good food, I strongly discourage this restaurant!
google avatar

Graham L.

Yelp
Sadly, I've watched this place deteriorate since it opened, particularly in the area of service. On my last and final visit, it was rude and chaotic. A female manager was exceptionally abrasive.

Torr C.

Yelp
Atmosphere excellent. Food quality is superior. Beer fabulous. We enjoyed this place so much we visited twice on our trip to Hamburg. Only disappointment was the tee shirts with the restaurant emblem (worn by staff) were not available to purchase. Highly recommend and I can say I do not do so easily. I am very particular!

Yelp
This place is a hangout and not a destination if you know what I mean. I personally love the area and am often in Elbgold right next door. Watched as this place was built and patiently awaited the opening. The design is very contemporary and very much like similar places in many other metropolitan areas. You could easily mistake it for being in London, New York or SF. Unfortunately, they only do beer well. I wouldn't come here for food. They have cold dishes and sandwiches available and some other staples but I am not a fan. At the same time, usually when I am going for beers I like to have some food with it and end up now usually skipping this place as we know we can't really eat well here. If you are just up for beers, want a really nice place to have them and are with a couple people you can't go wrong here. If you want to add food to that equation you'll unfortunately be better served elsewhere. Still worth checking out and sampling beers.....don't mistake my three stars as a negative review. Were it just about the beer and location, they'd get five stars. As they claim to be a restaurant though too, they get docked two stars. Service has always been very polite and helpful so no complaints there.

Dave T.

Yelp
If you love beer, this is THE place to be. Am NOT talking about the classical german beer, but craft beer. Food awesome as well (for omnivores), but not good for vegans (like me).
