Very nice restaurant with own beer. The Märzen Beer was so nice something else beside the well know wheat beer. You should try it. Even it was quite full the service was nice and they pay a lots of attention. The food selection was for everyone. You will definitely find a good choice.

Spectacular view. Impeccable service. The food was among the best I’ve had in Switzerland. Honestly took a 30 min detour just to come here and it was worth it. Make sure you book in advance! Highly recommended.

A large restaurant with an amazing view, we got to sit outside to soak up the evening sun. I ordered a vegetarian flammkuchen but was served a traditional one. It was tasty and crispy. We also ordered a sausage with sauerkraut, bread and mustard. We had to ask for the bread as it did not come out with our meal. Beer was excellent. Overall a lovely setting to enjoy the view.

Spending a sunny Saturday in Bern always feels a little magical. Wandering through the old town, with its beautiful arcades, small boutiques, and cozy cafés, invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment. A short walk brings you to the Bärengraben, where Bern’s famous bears relax by the Aare River, a scene that always makes you smile. The perfect way to round off the day? A visit to Altes Tramdepot. In this historic building turned lively brewery and restaurant, their house brewed beers and traditional Swiss dishes taste even better with the stunning view over Bern’s rooftops. Whether it’s a beer tasting flight or a hearty rösti, everything is crafted with real care. A visit to Altes Tramdepot feels like the final piece of a perfect day in Bern- relaxed, authentic, and full of small moments you’ll want to remember.

This restaurant is located near the bearpark with real bears. And it’s has gorgeous view from its terrace. The service was good. The guy was attentive. The food was tasty and the portion was really big.

We were here with my colleagues. Two days after each other, food was amazing. I have always bad luck getting the salad with not washed lettuce etc, here I had no problem with it. Beer taste is really good also the option to try many versions is lovely.

👍🏼 I absolutely love the pork knuckle — I really hope you keep it on the menu for the upcoming season! It's the main reason I keep coming back. 👍🏼 The location is fantastic, especially with the great view if you sit outside. 👍🏼 The service is consistently warm and friendly, which makes the experience even better. 👍🏼 Clean toilet. 👎 It’s a pity that the pork knuckle isn’t available for takeaway (without the side dish) bcs it's too big to wrap but I would love that option. 👎 I genuinely think the pork knuckle deserves a permanent spot on the main menu! 👎 The homemade tea can be hit or miss — sometimes it's delicious, other times a bit too watery.

The food was very good and the service was good. It can be very crowded during peak hours as its very near touristy sites. The restaurant is a top a small hill overlooking the old town below. I particularly enjoyed the veal with rosti. The fish and chips was a disappointment though, as the fish was small and not that flaky.

Yelp
Mittagessen mit friend. A go to when you are in Bern, Switzerland ! The beer, the food, and the old depot are amazing!!!

Yelp
I had an incredible experience at Altes Tramdepot in Bern! The 8 oz beer flight was an absolute highlight; each brew was distinct and expertly crafted, and a perfect way to sample the variety of flavors they have on tap. Paired with their pretzel and white sausage, it was a match made in heaven. The pretzel was warm and perfectly chewy, while the white sausage was tender and flavorful, complemented by the classic mustard that tied it all together. The atmosphere was cozy yet lively, with stunning views of the city adding to the charm. This is definitely a spot I'd recommend to anyone visiting Bern for great food, beer, and ambiance!

Yelp
Touristy but solid place if you want to take a break, or not, from all that walking or brown bear watching! Has a great view of the river and old town Bern with walking path that gets you back into the city. It's in a loop and we took the cogwheel back at the end of the path! Service was quick and friendly and other food my companions ordered were solid 3 stars but giving it a total score of 4 for service and ambience, and particularly of the food I got. The wurst I got was the best part of the meal, it was prepared in lightly seasoned broth and tasted fresh and smooth almost like a pate in a solid form---which compelled me to give this place 4 stars!

Yelp
Food was amazing. The taste was very rich and filling whilst also having a large portion. Beer was incredible especially with the pretzels (which admittedly were not as good as the beer. Service was great, both quick and helpful. While I was sat indoors, the inside had a great feel and wasn't drab at all.

Yelp
We had a delicious meal with a nice beer flight. The vibe is cool and comfortable with outdoor seating. However, a couple next to us sat after us, and had their table cleared and bill settled long before us. We sat with an uncleared table for over 30 minutes while flies annoyed us. The apple strudel was fabulous, but took over twenty minutes to arrive. It was a busy night, so we'd return for the overall food experience.
google avatar

Sabine A.

Yelp
Wonderful ambience and attentive service. View from outside terrace lovely. Great selection of beers of course and good hearty food.

Elisa P.

Yelp
The sausage and sauerkraut was excellent. The pretzel with honey mustard was great. The inside is very cool but I Wish the weather had been better so we could sit outside.
google avatar

Tiffany F.

Yelp
Very cool building with a lovely patio overlooking the river (great sunset spot!). Service was great, food was delicious, and they make their own yummy beer. This was definitely a highlight of my trip. I wish they didn't allow smoking on the patio, but I guess the Swiss would not appreciate that.

Yelp
A decent restaurant, ok brewery and an amazing place to hang out with a view on Bern. I have been returning here on multiple occasions with my SO and friends, and every single time enjoyed it. The food is traditionally Swiss and can be a bit heavy (duh), and beers on tap are not always that amazing, the terrace and the view always make it worth it.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Good food, great beer with a great view. I only ate there once for food and multiple times for a beer. The restaurant has a very cool style but nothing beats sitting outside with a great view of Bern
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Was on my list to go, and the views did not disappoint. The beers here were some of the best we had on the trip, and you really can't do any better in the city for a view. Service was very slow, but you have that view so relax. I had a sausage and a salad, which my wife and I split, and the beers. Sat outside in the beer garden overlooking the water. Not sure worth eating inside, but a delightful experience. FYI there was a huge line for some ice cream shop by the door, don't be fooled, its not the correct line.

Yelp
Went here for my birthday. The traditional Swiss veal and rosti were very good. It's in a nice location right by the bears. Fairly casual place inside.
google avatar

Roney C.

Yelp
We were looking for a less formal, more pub experience and Tramdepot hit the spot. Great buzz on the terrace and a warm sunset even in September. The host worked hard to squeeze us in with no reservation and waiter was extremely friendly and attentive. We had bratwurst & rosti and pork cordon blue. Both excellent. Great beer selection too.
google avatar

Olgert B.

Yelp
The view is amazing and the food is great. If you're stopping in Bern, definitely the place to go and check out. It is a little pricey but so is everywhere else. I recommend their burgers.

Yelp
Enjoyed some .2L flights which was much larger than I was expecting. I definitely got pretty tipsy from it! The waiter kindly sat us in the back without a reservation around 4pm. As the night got later, it definitely was super crowded and likely would have needed a reservation. The salami pretzel was amazing. Enjoyed the experience all around
google avatar

Yelp
Set in a micro brew. Long tables that are communal. Or outside seating with a view of the Bern bears. Nice. The servers here were very nice and helpful. The decor was also nice. Most of the brewery equipment is downstairs behind glass of you want to peek. The food. Yes to the wild boar stew with mushrooms. The wild boar was cooked to tenderness... And the mushrooms were fresh and there were a variety of them. Some local since I saw some of them being sold at the square market that morning. The noodles were also good... Big portions. The side of veggies was cooked in butter... No complaints. The wild boar steak with red wine sauce... Liked the sauce... The meat was very tough... Also had the homemade iced tea. Its a thing in Bern to have homemade iced tea. Always tasty. Would come here again but would be mindful of the food choices.

Ryan B.

Yelp
Big, comfortable location with a good atmosphere. Nice views of the city and the mountains. We had the sampler (5 beers, liked all of them). Also had pumpkin soup and weisswurst with pretzel (all delicious). Would definitely go back if I was back in bern in the future.
google avatar

Yelp
The Spicy Prawn Soup was amazing! Great place to stop after a long day of walking through town & the view is fantastic!

Yelp
When asking where to go/what to do/where to eat in Bern, all responses pointed to Tramdepot. Good beer? Tramdepot. Good food? Tramdepot. Fun sights? The bear pit, which is conveniently located next to Tramdepot. Well, I have to take the locals advice, so I ended up with some locals at Tramdepot for Friday dinner. With both inside and outside seating, the restaurant is pretty large, but it doesn't stop it from still getting packed! I got the tram-weizen to drink, which was a nice quality beer. Food-wise, I got the house specialty of the wild deer plate. Apparently, this place is known for their seasonal offerings of game meat. The food was good quality-- even though I got a game meat, the meat wasn't gamey tasting at all! It also came with lots of sides, such as brussel sprouts and potatoes. So. Much. Food. The portions were more Eastern European sized than Swiss, that is to say, it was huge! As the night wore on, the place definitely gets more boistorous. A fun crowd, good beer, and tasty food in a prime location. No wonder this place is on every list-- a must visit while you're in Bern!

Mark F.

Yelp
I'm not sure how anyone could say the burger was good here. We had a bison burger and a regular burger and both were completely average. The buns were dry the sauce was not very good. We did like the fries. We requested tap water and were charged four CHF for it. It's our fault for going to a touristy place.
google avatar

Robert T.

Yelp
The Tramdepot has an absolute monopoly on the east side of the Aare river bend! Situated high on the hill above the Aare and next to the Bear Pit, now the Bear Park I suppose, Altes Tramdepot was our favorite spot in Bern and one of the best in Switzerland! Tramdepot's house beer is well worth a try, it seems that when in Switzerland, the darker or more amber the beer, the tastier. Swiss pretzel sandwiches are a neat treat for those who haven't had them. Served with a pickle, brie, mustard, and ham, it was a great app. Both the spatzli and rosti are must tries, make sure you get both served with bacon, ham, and/or emmentaler. The outdoor seating features a view which is hard to match anywhere in the world.

Yelp
The best thing about this place is the view. It's also the only good thing about this place. Yes, it is one of the few places in Bern with real Yelp reviews, but that just means it's full of tourists (myself included). I would trust a lesser-known hole in the wall with real Swiss food over this place any day. Before you wait in line to sit down, I encourage you to walk to the wall, take a picture of the view, and leave. Of course, if you still want to go, these were my thoughts.. Essentially, unless you're coming here to only drink beer and then leave, don't come here. The service was aggressively mediocre. We waited or a long time for no reason to be seated -- then got lots of avoided eye contact from servers - yay! - and finally were seated at the same table as another couple. Sure this style seating is typical at many places, but the special fun fact about this place is that the ground is tilted. Why is that important? Well, the ground tilt makes this entire experience a game. Get excited to sit on a sharp-edged folding chair on an uneven surface while you wait for really mediocre, overpriced food. Also be prepared to try and remain seated perfectly in your terrible chair while you sit squashed against a stranger at a communal table you're at by no choice of your own. Plus plus plus, you'll be swerving every few seconds to avoid the next incoming plume of cigarette smoke from your other neighbors. Bonus points if you can unfold the 2.5 foot tall menu without entering anyone else's personal space. Normally, I think people have the decency to not smoke in such close quarters - but not at Old Tram Depot - children and occasional asthmatics go home. Thou art not welcome here. The cheeseburgers we had were $29.50.. guess that's normal Swiss price so can't complain too much, but just so bland and bleh for a dinner. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else in Bern. There's loads of other places that can't be missed.

Yelp
Beer flight of 5 was very tasty. Food was okay, not exceptional. Waiter was friendly. Being seated at same table as two women already eating was uncomfortable.
google avatar

Shauna L.

Yelp
The best meal I've had in Switzerland. Well, maybe my tastebuds were tired of cheese and potatoes. The grilled skinless chicken breast over the bed of fresh greens was very tender and seasoned perfectly. Lettuce fresh. Homemade ice tea refreshing. Balsamic dressing wonderful. My husband was not too impressed with the fish sandwich. But, he said the fries were good. He said the beer was great from the microbrewery.

Yelp
This is a great place located just east of the river and the old town in Bern. Unfortunately I didn't order their Bavarian sausage, sweet mustard, and pretzel... I'll make sure to do that next time. However, what I did eat was quite delicious. They have a number of house made beers. I tried their small (2dl) Helles for 3.60chf. It was tasty. For lunch I ordered their Wok daily special (25 chf)- shrimp with green curry sauce, vegetables and rice. I asked if they could sub noodles for rice, and although our waitress was really busy, she went out of her way to make sure it was possible, and happily did it. The shrimp were yummy, and the green curry was different but tasty. My friends ordered the cordon bleu (29.50 chf) and Kalbsgeschnetzeltes (typical Zurich dish 35 chf). They both really liked theirs. The prices were kind of high, but nothing too unusual. I liked that they had not only typical Swiss dishes, but also international dishes, like mine. The food came quickly, and although they were busy, they accommodated us quite well. We sat outside and had a nice view. There is a lot of seating inside and out, but it can get really busy.

Yelp
Great location & beer! We stopped in for a drink on rainy day and this place was perfect! Great ambience, service, and beer! I had the beer sampler and was expecting little 4 oz samples like how it comes in most places in America! However they were about 8 oz each and you could pick any three to sample! The waiter was very helpful in suggesting which ones to pick! They were all great! I would definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Came here with a co-worker who loves this place. I on the other hand was less impressed. My impression at least is that Altes is catered more towards the tourist than anything else. While the beer was good the food was meh. I had pork cordon bleu which was dry and reminded me of something I would get back in the states, frozen and cook in my home oven. Salad I had as a first course was good and my co-worker enjoys this place, having been here 4 times now, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but there are too many other options to go out of the way to make the trek here, at least for me.

Yelp
Ridiculously good food, amazing and very reasonably priced for location. Best german food I've ever had.
google avatar

Celine N.

Yelp
If you're looking for good old German-style comfort food and beer, this is the spot. We came for dinner on a Sunday night after a long afternoon of walking. Two half liter microbrews, a wild boar burger, a plate of spätzle with speck and melted cheese, and an apfelstrudel to top it all off was exactly what we wanted and needed. This spot is so close to the bears that you might immediately discount it as a tourist trap but don't. We really enjoyed our meal and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Bern!
google avatar

Erin T.

Yelp
We enjoyed the Traindepot! We were able to walk in on a Sunday afternoon without reservations; staff was prompt and courteous. As a diner with celiac disease, I was presented with several options for food and also gluten free beer! I would recommend reservations as it gets really busy. The inside area gets loud but is great for large groups or families. Our neighbors got a huge beer fountain on the table which was fun to watch. We ordered beers and traditional food, and were pleasantly surprised. The prices were affordable for Switzerland.
google avatar

Katie P.

Yelp
Has a very touristy feel but the food is excellent, service is friendly, and has a great view. It's a bit expensive, which may just be normal for Bern. English menu is available and the waitstaff is multilingual. Seating, ordering, and paying bill is uncomplicated. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're a larger group given how small some of the restaurants in town are.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Had a beautiful dinner with my friends. Got to see the bears before walking into the restaurant. Had the cold cuts platter for dinner with a flight of their local beers. Great ambiance, views and food.
google avatar

Greg D.

Yelp
Great place to try some solid local beers and food. Nice atmosphere and service. Many seating options: inside, outside, or at the bar. This time 'round I ordered the three beer sampler and the 'tram depot' salad; it was a just-right portion size. My co-diners both ordered the weiss wurst (considered a 'bier snack') which comes w/a pretzel or sauerkraut. Its a but pricey & touristy here as its located next to the Bern bear pits, but the food, service, and beer are worth a visit.
google avatar

Jay Y.

Yelp
A TASTE OF GERMANY IN SWITZERLAND One of the best places to go to after watching the bears! This restaurant also brew their own beers. I tried a sampler of their beers (Tram-Helles, Tram-Märzen, and Tram-Weizen) and also ordered their specialty dish - Bavarian sausages, sweet mustard & pretzel. The Bavarian sausages were so juicy and and the pretzel was so warm and perfect. It's been a few years since I've been here and I'm still yearning for something similar to their food here. Until we meet again, the search for those yummy Bavarian sausages and pretzel continues.......
google avatar

Gio C.

Yelp
If I ever visit Bern again, this is the place where I want to eat. It has the greatest food. I ate my platter and wanted to eat my friends plate aswell. It was all delicious. Too bad I only found out about it on the last day. It has that student-bar type of feeling, but the food is high class. I recommend it to everyone.
google avatar

Beatrice T.

Yelp
I fondly remember this place. Not only had we one of the best views ever, but the food was exceptional. The waiter was friendly and service was good. I think this is my favorite place from this trip to Bern. The beer was really good too. My daughter is carbohydrate intolerant, and they were very willing to exchange the pommel frites with another portion of vegetables. I am so happy we made it to the "Altes Tramdepot" and we will definitely be back the next time we will be here.
google avatar

M N.

Yelp
The beer is good, but the food leaves much to be desired. We ordered a cordon-bleu and buffalo meat cheeseburger. The cordon-blue is supposed to have cheese in it, lots of cheese, and this one barely had any. The buffalo cheeseburger was overly salty and overcooked. It was a nice concept with a pairing of bbq sauce and coleslaw, but the flavors did not meld together as they should have and overall came off as too salty. Ambiance is nice. Staff is friendly. Really a great stop for beer as they have very nice selections.

Grace K.

Yelp
Old tram depot, view of the bear garden. Lots of small birds in the summer, be careful with your food! Great menu for lunch in English and German (or Swiss for that matter). Young and young at heart audience, have a go - enjoy the food and quality time with friends or family. A sure recommendation when you are in Bern, Switzerland!
google avatar

Nicole Z.

Yelp
Our first dinner while on our short stay in Bern. I bookmarked this place not knowing it was connected to the tourist center. This discovery made me nervous it wouldn't be very good, but these fears were put to ease. The ambiance inside is very hip, an old train station with good lighting and a great patio if the weather is nice, which it was unfortunately not during our travels. Our server was very friendly and humorous and spoke English well. We split the pretzel with butter, the rosti with bacon and apple sauce, and the spatzi with bacon. The pretzel is a pass for me, it was a bit dense, not light and chewy like I look for in a good pretzel. Rather than coming basted in clarified butter as I expected a to-go tab of butter was provided with the unsalted pretzel. Meh. The rosti was good, my wife said it reminder her more of a breakfast dish. The bacon was soft, which was different. The spatzi is basically the Swiss version of mac and cheese, let's be honest. It came with a sh*t ton of bacon and cheese. Dare I say it...too much bacon? I do not! But I may have had the thought. I also had the sampler of three beers, my faves were the wiezen and marzen. 3 good sized samples around $10 F, good deal. They also sell by the liter and small kegs, jussssst an FYI.
google avatar

Atze S.

Yelp
The kitchen is Tourist-Class: basic skills but expensive. Therefore the selfmade beer is good. And in summer you can sit outside and have a great view over the river and the old town.
google avatar

Tinker B.

Yelp
The waiters/waitresses totally ignore walk-ins. It takes them forever to get the walk-in customers seated. Then they'd take another 'era' to write the orders. All this happens even on a regular day/time. Terrible customer service. I wouldn't go there ever again
google avatar

Inês P.

Yelp
Great place to hang out with friends and family during a sunny afternoon! We were visiting Bern for the day and walked around the beautiful city until mid afternoon. When we reached the bear park and saw this place we immediately decided to get a table outside and try their beer. It is super cool that you can see the brewery in the lower level, and the view of the city is breathtaking. The service was very friendly and the food very good as well. Have the cheese and hams selection and definitely try the beers!!

Jeff L.

Yelp
Awesome views. Friendly staff. Good micro brews. Next to the bears. Like that they spoke English to explain the different beers. Get a pretzel too.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
The view is nice. The beer is good. The food is heavy and nothing special. Try it once.

Ron G.

Yelp
While the food was fine (sausage and rusti), I had to wait 1 whole hour in an almost empty restaurant for it!! Then I got some half-ass excuse that it takes time to cook both sides of the sausage properly. Very pathetic. The view outside is great, and so if you are in a group it must be more fun, but on your own..try another place.
google avatar

Qype User (liwick…)

Yelp
Nice food and good beer. Very good for medium or larger groups. The food is a bit pricey but it is worth it.
google avatar

Camille C.

Yelp
Great spot to enjoy a beer, pretzel w/ sweet mustard & Bavarian sausage after watching the bears!
google avatar

HaengDeung J.

Yelp
location is near the bear park. View is fantastic and all of the beer is good. I saw most beautiful woman i've ever seen.

David W.

Yelp
Just left......wonderful place, great young staff spoke perfect English. They were open at 4 PM or before.....thank you......got very busy as we left.
