23 Best Bars in Rome

"Alto might be the new kid on the block, but the crowd already feel like regulars. There are locals and non-locals; hip and pretty, all enjoying the cinematic views, glamorous decor, and strong drinks. On the rooftop of The First Musica hotel, it is a sprawling modern space with a classic Italian cocktail list and over 200 wine labels. Guests can prop themselves up on soft velvet bar stools and enjoy their beverages on the green-marble counter. There are the Italian classics, of course—who could pass up a Negroni in Rome?—but it’s worth looking at the more adventurous concoctions, like the signature ‘Hugo’, made with elderflower liquor, soda and prosecco. There’s also a martini menu; their Vodka Martini with a twist is perfection." - Maresa Manara

After trying (and failing) to get into some of Rome’s popular restaurants, we ended up dining at Alto, our hotel’s restaurant. The food turned out to be surprisingly good. The oysters were large and fresh, though definitely on the pricey side. The pasta offered an artistic twist on authentic recipes, which was enjoyable. Overall, it’s a good option—especially if you don’t feel like venturing out—but at the end of the day, it is still a hotel restaurant.

Good restaurant with pleasant atmosphere. Food is good. Staff is nice. View is amazing. Just 1 minus from our last experience. My husband while booking the table noted that we celebrate my birthday & he has asked something special on this occasion. Candle, note in the dessert or something like that. But unfortunately this request was ignored. I hope that for the future similar requests the staff will be more attentive.

I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. I had made a reservation in advance through their website, but as soon as I arrived, the man at the reception treated me extremely poorly. First, he told me the restaurant was already closed. Then, he suddenly said he did have my reservation. But right before I was about to go upstairs, he made up an excuse that there were no tables available — even though I had a confirmed reservation. This felt like clear discrimination towards me for being Latino and not a local from Rome, and it completely ruined what should have been an enjoyable evening. I would never recommend this place to anyone who values respectful treatment.

Me and a friend had gone here for cocktails and to see the view. We had accidentally booked for the restaurant instead of the bar but staff were understanding and accommodating. Service was overall very good, and prices a bit high but reasonable.

Great experience at Alto! We were looking for an Aperitif and this place was recommended to us by the owner of our hotel. We popped in around 7pm to their rooftop bar and were met with a beautiful singer and gorgeous views. We ordered some drinks and were served many snacks, such as olives, chips, mini sandwiches, nuts and crackers for free. The drinks were on the pricey side but we loved our spritzes.

Started strong and took a nose dive quickly Alto was recommended by their sister hotel The First Roma Dolce. Their previous dinner recommendation was supreme so we took it. View is great. The staff was attentive at the start with tasty cocktails, crudo, and anti pasta. The pasta and main course is where things went poorly quickly. Cocktails: Italian 75 (tasty and refreshing) Truffletini (on the heavier side but very good), bottle of house Chardonnay (light and delicious) Crudo: catch of the day tartar - fresh with apple that gave a light crunch. Antipasta: monkfish cordon bleu - well fried and interesting Primi: crab pasta was fine though forgettable. One of our biggest complaints however was the scallop risotto. The dish looked raw and wet to start. The risotto was embarrassingly undercooked - the rice crunched. I wish we had sent it back. We only ate about 1/3 of the plate and when the staff asked how it was I told her it was very undercooked. She didn’t say anything and took it away. At a restaurant trying to brag about Michelin stars and their sister restaurant id hope for more prompt addressing of issues. Mains: salt baked fish - it was overall bland and took a lot of work from the accompanying sauces to make it interesting. The second major grievance was the veal was wildly over cooked. Again I wish I had sent it back. We didn’t stay for dessert given the last 2 dishes. For a 330€ meal, we wish we would have just had drinks and appetizers. Spend a little extra and go to a real Michelin star restaurant.
