11 Festive Ski Resorts Around the World—With Christmas Tree Lightings, Charming Holiday Markets, and Santa Encounters

"Beyond the slopes, the city’s Christmas markets offer distinct personalities—think brass bands, sparkling lights, glass‑walled stalls, and unique gifts—making it as compelling for festive strolling as for skiing." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Altstadt - refers to historic city centre in Germanic speaking countries. This one in city of Innsbruck is enchanting in winter with Christkindlemart stalls, fairy-tale themed & Xmas statues - all larger than life everywhere. So look up & about! Goldene Dach - iconic Golden Roof balcony with backdrop of misty shrouded Alps is the centrepiece of it all. Retail outlets like Swarovski is here & worth a look see. Many restaurants, cafes & bakeries can be found - some in quaint nooks. Public toilets are fee payable :( River Inn that gives the city its name is round the corner from here for scenic central lookout & pics. Two other Xmas markets are around here too. Altstadt is the beating heart & enchanting centre to spend some time ✨️✨️

The medieval heart of the city, where the urban layout from the 15th–16th-century Habsburg era remains well preserved. Centered around the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof), the area extends along Herzog-Friedrich-Straße, with traces of old fortifications and narrow historic alleys. Against the dramatic backdrop of the Nordkette mountain range, it forms the iconic scene often described as the "Old Town in the Alps."

We returned to Innsbruck and joined an orientation tour through the Old Town. We visited the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof). It is a landmark in Innsbruck, known for its ornate late Gothic bay window adorned with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles. It was completed in 1500 under the commission of Emperor Maximilian I to commemorate his marriage to Bianca Maria Sforza. We visited the Swarovski Crystal Worlds Innsbruck Store and its impressive displays. We had lunch at the Der Bäcker Ruetz - Altstadt Innsbruck (opposite to the Swarovski store). The shop was busy. The focaccia and apple strudel were lovely. We spent the lazy afternoon strolling around the central Innsbruck checking out on shops, supermarkets, cafe and talking to a local resident about his life in Austria and Germany

Charming and Timeless – A Walk Through Altstadt Innsbruck My visit to Altstadt Innsbruck (Old Town Innsbruck) was like stepping into a storybook. Nestled between majestic Alpine peaks, this historic heart of the city effortlessly blends medieval charm with vibrant modern life. As I wandered through its narrow, cobbled streets, I was surrounded by colorful façades, intricate architecture, and the kind of Old World ambiance that’s hard to find elsewhere. The highlight, of course, was the iconic Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl), glimmering in the sunlight and drawing in history lovers and photographers alike. The nearby buildings, adorned with frescoes and Gothic windows, added to the enchanting atmosphere. Every corner had a hidden gem—from quaint cafés and boutique shops to local markets and street performers that made the experience feel authentic and alive. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or just soaking in a picturesque European setting, Altstadt Innsbruck doesn’t disappoint. It’s walkable, welcoming, and rich in culture. I only wish I had more time to explore its museums and enjoy a few more Austrian pastries at one of its charming bakeries. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Tyrol—this place is not just a stop; it’s a highlight.

What a wonderful place to visit. The people are kind and welcoming. The old churches are incredible. The city is super clean. The cuisine we ate was excellent. We will return for a longer stay.

Innsbruck old town is lovely and the park close by is also brilliant to see as there is quite often different art exhibitions and light shows etc to see whilst you are there. Although the old town has a lot of the typical tourist tat shops there is a nice mix of modern and local independent stores the feel of the place is lovely with amazing scenery in the background

Yelp
The old town of Innsbruck is one of the most charming and picturesque places in Europe! It's very walkable with lots of shopping and dining options. Parking and sight-seeing was easy and convenient. We got to experience the Easter market, and it was perfect for snacks and souvenirs. We had dinner in a delicious Indian restaurant. It's a beautiful place well worth visiting.
