Altstadt Vienna, an SLH Hotel

Not too far from the main sites, very friendly staff, the room was perfect, great light and wonderful shower, the housekeeping was excellent, especially with all the mud coming in from the snow outside. We experienced no noise and slept very well,||The breakfast was outstanding, good choice for all and egg dishes to order ala carte best selection of teas I have experienced.||Guests should be aware that this is a boutique property with an apartment complex, the mail reception and saloon is located on the first floor.

A wonderful hotel close to the centre and an excellent base for exploring the city.|It is a unique older property with great character, quirky rooms and décor.|Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice, free complimentary afternoon tea is also served every day. The thing that really makes this hotel are the staff, they are genuinely welcoming and friendly. Our special thanks go to Milena for whom nothing was too much trouble, her cheerful demeanour and eagerness to help certainly added to our enjoyment of Vienna. Thank you to all at the Altstadt for your hospitality.

Hotel Altstadt is a truly stunning property, with beautiful design details and a charming atmosphere throughout. ||However, during our four-night stay, it felt like we were given the smallest room available for two people, and there was hardly any space for our luggage or belongings, which made the stay less comfortable than expected. ||The bathroom heating could not be adjusted, and when we raised this with staff, we were simply told that this is just how it is, which was disappointing. ||On the positive side, the breakfast was wonderful, with high-quality items, and the afternoon teatime was a real highlight and something we genuinely enjoyed. ||Overall, the hotel itself is beautiful, but for a longer stay, room size and comfort would be important to clarify in advance.

I am so confused about the positive reviews of this hotel. At best it’s Airbnb level for a 20 something. No bell person to meet us. Our first room had a scaffold outside and was super noisy. We’ve been moved to a room that is better than the first, but the furniture is similar to IKEA. Creative use of color. The bones of the building are great with high ceilings and lovely doors. The hallways are nicked with scratches all over. There are containers of air freshener in the hallways in an attempt to disguise the musty smell of the building. Dirt in all the corners. The bathroom has really cool tile but there isn’t even enough space to put one’s razor. This room Is not comfortable for two adults other than the king size bed. The nightstand lights are cheap and I’ve inadvertently knocked it over trying to plug in my phone charger. Wildly disappointing. We’d rather cut our trip short than stay here.

Hotel Altstadt Vienna might have been the best hotel we stayed at, and we travel a lot. It is very unique, filled with art and beautiful touches throughout. Our room and bathroom were a nice size for two, nice design, very comfortable bed and no noise from neighboring rooms. The breakfast was fresh and outstanding, the salon for breakfast or afternoon tea/ bar and drinks very inviting and masterfully designed, makes you really feel at home. The staff is super friendly and gave good advise on Christmas markets that are a bit off the beaten path or the main ones. Spittelberg is just minutes away and was new to us, as well as the suggested market at Karlsplatz - both with different vibes and excellent experiences. The neighborhood close to the museums is very pleasant and filled with countless restaurants - a great alternative to Innere Stadt. We come to Vienna on regular basis and certainly would love to stay here again.

Nice quiet location but still really close to many sights either walking or with transit. The room was great, and the heated floors in the bathroom were a lovely surprise! The breakfast was fantastic. They even had a selection of gluten free bread.

This hotel was great, really great. I truly enjoyed the room, the large shower with a heated floor. The laundry service was prompt and reliable. The basket of fruit was generous and appreciated. Thank you. The taxi services were on time, and the drivers were friendly and professional. Altstadt arranged my airport pickup, they maintained the management of my unexpected flight delay, which was over an hour. I was happy to be greeted by my driver after being up so long from SFO. I truly recommend this hotel. Not to leave out, the grand breakfast offerings and service in the mornings. Thank you again for helping create such fond memories of Vienna. : )

Our repeat visit, this time for seven days, confirmed the unique character, quality and compelling vibe of the hotel. Our memories had not been burnished over time. It really is exceptional, with outstanding hospitality, facilities and food. Beyond the delightful physical aspects, the warmth, care and humanity of the staff make this a very special place to stay while embracing the charms of Vienna. If Vienna is the most liveable city, then the Altstadt is the most liveable hotel. |Highly recommended for the discerning.

This hotel got on my radar thanks to a recommendation from a trusted and well-traveled source, and I am so glad I went with it for my most recent visit to Vienna. This hotel is relatively small and family owned, and it has got so many things about hospitality right. Style: The visual nerd in me rejoiced seeing how full of character it is, with each of the rooms (and even each of the hallways) styled differently. The space is filled with original paintings and art objects, reflecting the owners's passion. Location: 5 out of 5, as it is walking distance to the historic center and most of the sights, while being in a quieter area not far from the Museumsquartier. Breakfast: My oh my, that breakfast deserves separate accolades. I only wish I could have access to that same selection of bread (and beyond) in the hotels here in the States. It is a buffet table in essence, with an outstanding selection to fit any diet or preference. And you get a few "chef's options" too that change daily. The staff are super friendly and caring, and the breakfast space is very elegant. Room: spacious and tasteful. The sleep quality was great (and that is by no means a guarantee for me at hotels, so I was grateful for a comfy bed and pillows and high quality breathable bedding). All that being said, the devil is in the detail, as usual. And here there were those small gestures that made you smile and helped you feel at home (albeit for a few days): a welcome note from the team, and a cute little ornament gift (as we were staying there over Christmas, and spending Xmas at a hotel away from home is well... different), a waffle dispenser (you've got to see it) at the reception, the "tea and cake" time for the guests. And more. Things like that were that cherry on top that made me want to come back when I am back in Vienna.

This place is all about the details. If you are looking for a quiet, quirky, and relaxing boutique hotel look no further. It is built into what seems like an old apartment building. The reception floor is where they have the dining room and lounge. The included European breakfast is amazing! They have an array of fresh bread, cheeses, meats, veggies, and muesli (unbaked granola). They have at least ten different kusmi teas to choose from. In the afternoon there is a complimentary tea hour. The rooms are spacious and all are different from one another as they are designed by various artists. You can tell that the rooms were so carefully thought out (everything from the light fixtures to the side tables). In terms of location, it's about a 5 euro trip most places, 12 min walk to the museums and 20 min to the center of the old city center.

I'm almost afraid to post because it's soooo good I selfishly don't want it to be hard to book next time I'm in Vienna. Absolutely one of the best breakfasts, design forward, beautiful rooms with great service and a truly unique experience. The art forward approach makes it an ideal place for those creatives that travel a lot and want a breath of fresh air from the typical business hotels. A gem!

Hotel is clean and well maintained. Hotel staff are very friendly. They show genuine interest in customer care and comfort. Breakfast buffet is awesome. Have good variety of freshly baked breads every day with elaborate items that includes fresh fruits, veggies, cheese, ham, cereal and more. Highly recommend this hotel for your stay.

The room was HUGE...even for American standards. We were in room #33 and had a nice view of the church and clock tower across the square. There are these big, beautiful windows that open onto the street and let it a ton of light, making the room just happiness to be in. The hotel itself is decorated in cool artwork and fun colors. The breakfast was a nice selection of Austrian breakfast items and one day we were even offered cooked eggs, but that was only one day. Usually it was a nice bread selection, grains, cured meats, nice cheeses, fruit, and veggies. In the afternoon there is a tea time with tea and usually some type of nice bread or cake. The hotel is not right down in the middle of the tourist area, but it is very much walkable to anything in the history city center, and there are a ton of bars and restaurants on the way. The hotel staff was wonderful and helpful for any questions that we had.

As we traversed Austria and headed to Prague via train, the Altstadt proved to be a splendid and appropriate stop on our vacation. As they claim, it was indeed like having an apartment in the city. And we could not have been more pleased. The reception staff spoke flawless English, were eager to help us and seemed genuinely motivated to please. We liked them instantly. Karolina (staff) and I had traded email and she had assisted me in understanding proximities of train and bus, etc. before the fact. She remembered my name and the exchange and in fact, debated me on a subtle nuance of English I had used in email. I was astounded, and pleased to have such a dialog when many of my own country would not recognize the ambiguity i had imparted. Karolina did! Our room was toward the back of the building. As such, it had a powerful breeze from the huge windows and was refreshingly open and not stuffy. We heard no noise from any direction at any time. The location was great. We walked to an evening concert, ate at a local pizza joint which became just overrun with locals - we enjoyed them to a huge degree. A short walk to the underground, and you can be anywhere in minutes. The "Ring" is an easy walk, as is the elegant Palmenhaus - which is perfect for an early evening meal under the stars. We really enjoyed this hotel. Everything positive you've read from others holds true in our experience.

We were there 7 years ago....me, hubby and our little 1 year old in a carrier. We arrived VERY early in the morning, but they were kind enough to let us check into a hotel room that was available so we can wash up!!! They are located in a great area, we walked everywhere! The only thing was the room and space was a little antiquated back then....looks like they are all refurbished! Hope we'll get to go visit soon....

We just finished our stay at the wonderful Hotel Altstadt. It is close enough to the center city and other "must sees" but tucked just far enough away to feel as if you have left the tourists behind. The beautiful and comfortable room came with a lovely breakfast. The staff was helpful and friendly and all spoke English. We would definitely stay here again!

One of the best romantic getaway hotels in a culturally rich European City. At first you will be greeted with a discreet entrance to the building with nary a soul in sight except to a large and spacious staircase up to the second level - the grand red carpet, large enclossed collosal candles and unusual mirror-shined steel plate on the side of wall give you a hint for the design epic that you will eventually step into. But don't let the less than grand side entrance and walkup to reception fool you, this hotel is as boutique and design as they get. Each hallway had a theme and it was fun just exploring around and taking pictures of the different floors and rooms around the hotel (ranging from dark wood/maroon velvet, to playful light Alice in Wonderland experience). The common dining/lounge area was exceptionally designed with a different theme for each room, high quality furnishing, you definitely feel the luxe and attention to detail that is infused into the design. We stayed in the "Felix" room (named from the floor carpet with a huge cursive felix inscribed into it - booked a standard design room and got upgraded - Thank you Aldstadt!) which we recommend to couples or soon to be coupling ;) The room is very large, dark, shape is odd with long hall and 1/2 nude prints on the wall and one on the ceiling above the bed, which got a good laugh but was very tastefully done per my girlfriend. Here is my stream of thoughts on the design deatils: the room is dark dark dark, dark wood trim, open air sink, second bathroom (with door) for toilet was a little odd off on the side, has an elevated corner with open bathtub illuminated from above (it looks amazing), the ceilings are extremely high, mini couch/coffee corner, illy espresso machine (with 4 complementary shots), super tall windows (with roll down darkening shades) facing interior courtyard (and opposite other voyeurs), really grand chandelier and exceptional mood lighting with a million unmarked 'figure me out' switches, needs more outlets for gadgets, odd mini TV standing on trip in middle of room we did not watch, sheer curtained off area for hanging clothes (not exactly a closed closet), and walk-in dark tiled shower big enough to fit 10 (would not try it, hehe). This hotel definitely turned an initially questionable trip into a memorable and enjoyable one, thank you! :) The staff were exceptionally friendly. I can't stress this enough as an incredible value, esp. after somewhat of an abusive experience we foreigners experience in some Viennese dining facilities. The waitress during the morning breakfast was so friendly and helpful (always smiling - seems to be having the best day of her life working in the Aldstadt) she really made out day. The breakfast itself, mostly continental, and huge variety of cold cuts/dishes, tasty and filling (and included!) rounded out this stay. I recommended this to my European Friends as well as any Americans who want to have a unique boutique romantic experience/getaway.
