Amam Dacotan Kyoto

Very delicious bread and pastries! At first, I lined up because I could smell such a tasty aroma from outside, and I didn’t realize that this place was actually very viral. I waited around 30 minutes before I finally understood, after the waitress explained, that I needed to take an online queue number. People take a long time deciding what to order because there are so many options, and everything looks very tempting. The prices are also quite reasonable. After tasting the food, I understood why it’s so popular. The bread that i bought is genuinely good. The interior of the building is also very aesthetic, which probably contributes to its virality. Cozy with a great ambience.

I want to start of this review by saying that you can get on the waiting list/make a reservation on the link provided on their instagram!! (@amam_dacotan_kyoto on airwait.jp) I went there blindly, not knowing you had to make a reservation and come back when you’re number is called (as indicated on signs), but I scanned the QR code and was able to get in under 20 minutes. It was not as complicated as some of the reviews suggest. You need to get a drink (one per person) to be able to sit inside. We took the matcha latte and the chai tea. It was great. As for the food, the ones we chose were good. There’s a big selection of pastries. I think they make interesting mixing of flavours which made me really happy to try. I do think the bread could be less dry, but I might’ve taken one that was out for a while. Also, some of the items can be re-heated on the second floor, where you get your drinks. Overall, great bakery :)

This popular bakery has lots of breads and pastries, including sweet and savoury ones. We have absolutely no self control here because everything looks good! This store at Kyoto seems to be less crowded than Tokyo’s and there’s even a dine in area where the staff will help heat up your breads. It was a confusing experience but the food was good 😅 Each time we went was a bit different. The first time just a standard line to go through to pick our your items and pay. The next time we were asked if we had a reservation then went in anyways to do to go. They always seemed to have a pretty steady line out the door no matter the time of day. The atmosphere was really nice and cozy, they had a huge selection of patries (both sweet and savory) so anyone can find something to try! They have seating on the 2nd level to eat in. In order to eat in you must buy a drink per person which were pricey. And they will not heat up takeaway items for you. Overall the food was good and very unique. The customer service seems to be a bit lacking and confusing.

We queued for almost an hour, mostly because many people in front of us still hadn’t decided what to order. I loved the Mentai Baguette — the baguette was perfectly baked and the mentaiko was super flavorful. I’m not a big fan of their doughnuts, though; the texture wasn’t as good as the baguette. That said, if you have extra time, this bakery is definitely worth trying. Tips: Come closer to closing time for a shorter line. I’ve included photos with their operating hours for reference. Additional notes: They only accept cashless payment (no cash payment).

(Note we visited in November 2025) - but do not line up and expect to get in. You'll need to scan the QR code on the sandwich board outside, which will tell you roughly how many minutes you have before you're at the front of the line (we waited 96 minutes), so we went and did other things in the area. Once we got the notification that it was our time, we headed back and still had to wait...Someone working there will call out numbers (so if you don't speak Japanese go to the front and show them your phone). Once inside it's a small space next to the bakery where you can pick what you want with tongs and then checkout to go or you can dine in and go upstairs. The upstairs is very moody, and has warm lighting (very aesthetic). We got a few savoury bites and the two that look like ice cream sandwiches are very much butter and not ice cream. I don't know if it's worth the wait (unless you plan to go do other activities in the area).

After seeing countless Instagram reels, we decided to visit Amam Dacotan Kyoto for some sweet treats. Waited in line for about 25 minutes, only to find out that reservations were required — scanned the QR code, got a queue number, and finally made it inside. Picked up a few desserts, but the moment we tried them outside the store, it was a huge letdown. The buns were a bit hard, some weren’t even sweet, and overall, it felt pretty ordinary. Definitely not worth the hype — a big no from us.

The pastries here are exceptionally delicious and unique, unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. Even though there may be a sister store in Kyoto, the pastry selection differs significantly, with Kyoto offering its own unique specialties. The staff are incredibly friendly, creating a positive atmosphere upstairs. You have the option to either dine in or take your order to go. must need to order drink if u dine in. Recommend
