Great experience with some flaws. An old village taken over by the government and reconstructed. Everything new, like three story buildings, were removed and the old houses reconstructed. Then the whole village was leased by Aman. (Sadly no before-and-after pictures). I really enjoyed the serene, green atmosphere and the sounds of nature (five stars so far). Our room had double aircon units so not a problem to cool down the 40 degrees heatwave (August is a bad month). The toilet was in a shielded corner of the room but there is a fan. I wish the designer had paid some attention to the electricity wiring. The fan does not work when the master switch is off, but the light works. Make sure to double flush at night. The room has a CD player so you have to bring your own Bluetooth dongle if you want to use Spotify. Stay two nights. If you can afford and like trekking stay three nights.
The Steam Room restaurant was fine for dinner. The breakfast is a la carte buffet, small portions, but you can order as much as you want. The spa is beautiful, but at prices around 300 SGD per hour, I turn into a stingy bastard. Aman had a nice singing bowl performance which was very nice and free. There is no info in the room about activities so be sure to ask a lot of questions to the staff. Service in English on WeChat was almost instant. The recommended Hangzhou House restaurant was the major disappointment. I can live with no English spoken, but not tourist trap food. A bland mushroom dish, a very nice chicken soup with some morels, plain braised beef cubes in brown sauce topped by rosemary, ridiculously few pieces of unshelled crab legs with a lot of soft rice cakes. Two small glasses of flavored alcohol. Lackluster service. Total price for two was SGD 350. A Michelin star on this restaurant is not warranted. No time to try the other Michelin star vegetarian restaurant.
Do note that traffic in Hangzhou is terrible. We spent close to two hours in a car from Hangzhou East station.
