Amanfayun

"Located in the bamboo-filled mountains above Hangzhou, the rustic 42-room Amanfayun, Amanresorts’ second in China, is actually a conversion of an entire village whose inhabitants once harvested the tea for which the town is justly famous. Bisecting the resort’s grounds is one of the village’s original thoroughfares, a stream-lined cobblestoned path that’s today traversed by not only hotel guests but day-trippers walking to and from the temples that dot the area. The concept aside, what’s really remarkable about Amanfayun is its restraint: The landscaping is natural, even a little wild; the signage is minimal (perhaps too much so—you’ll need a flashlight for nighttime strolling); and the 42 accommodations—once houses—with their stone floors, cloth-and-wire lantern lights, and subdued palette, are stunningly spare and sophisticated. Along with jettisoning tired design clichés (you’ll see no silk fans or red lanterns here), the hotel also upends traditional notions of what a resort should be: There are no TVs, no electronic locks. In their place is silence, stillness, and, visible from some of the rooms, the breathtaking sight of thirteenth-century bodhisattvas and Buddhas carved into the nearby cliff. Amanfayun’s only shortcoming is its overly shy staff, who march around in uniforms that are unfortunately reminiscent of Mao jackets and whose English skills run the gamut from barely existent to just adequate. The resulting stilted service toward Western guests is a regrettable barrier to what is otherwise a transporting experience."

Amanfayun (Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Privacy, discretion, understatement, and above all absolute tastefulness in every conceivable detail: this is the stuff an Aman hotel is made of. At their Hangzhou outpost, set amidst the tea fields and bamboo groves on the outskirts of town, those values translate into forty luxurious courtyard dwellings, designed in the distinctive style of traditional Chinese courtyard homes." - Tablet Hotels

5 unique dining experiences in Asia - SilverKris

"Set within an ancient-village resort beside the West Lake UNESCO site, surrounded by tea plantations and winding stone pathways, this Steam House offers hands-on cooking lessons focused on dim sum and the history of steaming so ingredients retain texture and nutrients. The experience highlights simple village cuisine from Hangzhou and neighboring regions, showcases traditional steaming methods still used today, and lets diners eat alfresco in an ancient courtyard or watch preparations in a semi-open kitchen amid the resort’s century-old stone dwellings and temple-lined Fayun Pathway." - Claire Knox and Karen Fong

An Average—Perhaps Slightly Below-Average—Experience by Aman Standards||This is another property we felt genuinely conflicted about reviewing. While many elements of the stay resonated with us, we ultimately left feeling that this was among the weaker Aman experiences we have encountered to date. That said, by broader hospitality standards—and particularly within China—it remains a top-tier offering.||To begin, minor lapses can and do occur at Aman properties; this is simply a fact of life, and we are generally very forgiving of them. Our stay began with a few such issues—namely a mix-up with restaurant reservations and initial room expectations not being fully met. These were promptly addressed, and we appreciated the team’s responsiveness.||Where the property truly shines is in its profound connection to place. The setting, with direct and unlimited access to Lingyin Temple and the Fei Lai Feng Scenic Area, is exceptional and deeply evocative. The food offerings are also among the strongest within Aman China. Both Hangzhou House and the vegetarian restaurant deliver a level of culinary quality that is genuinely difficult to surpass elsewhere.||The principal disappointment, however, lay in the curation of experiences—traditionally one of Aman’s greatest strengths. While the seven-temple tour was outstanding and thoughtfully executed, the West Lake boat tour on our final day fell noticeably short. Communication was minimal; the boatman spoke little English (and while we do speak some Mandarin), there was no meaningful effort to share the rich history or cultural context of West Lake. The experience also ended earlier than expected, without clear explanation.||We understand that this activity is operated by a third party. Still, at this level—and especially under Aman—stronger vendor curation and quality control are essential. In the end, the experience offered very limited added value and felt like something we could have arranged independently at a significantly lower cost.||In summary, Amanfayun remains a beautiful property with undeniable strengths in location, cuisine, and atmosphere. Yet for a brand defined by exceptional storytelling, immersion, and experience design, it fell a bit short!

We stayed in a duplex villa with 2 separate rooms which is very convenient as we share a courtyard yet with our own privacy. Service was excellent with great attention to details. We had old grandparents with us and the staff paid special attention to ensure they are well taken care of and access the facilities seamlessly.

Where to start - this hotel is simply perfect, looks exactly and even better as on the pictures, staff is super caring and hands on and food is to die for. Spa massage and all activities could also not have been better. We had a relaxing and resourceful break at this hotel between many city visits during our china trip

Great experience with some flaws. An old village taken over by the government and reconstructed. Everything new, like three story buildings, were removed and the old houses reconstructed. Then the whole village was leased by Aman. (Sadly no before-and-after pictures). I really enjoyed the serene, green atmosphere and the sounds of nature (five stars so far). Our room had double aircon units so not a problem to cool down the 40 degrees heatwave (August is a bad month). The toilet was in a shielded corner of the room but there is a fan. I wish the designer had paid some attention to the electricity wiring. The fan does not work when the master switch is off, but the light works. Make sure to double flush at night. The room has a CD player so you have to bring your own Bluetooth dongle if you want to use Spotify. Stay two nights. If you can afford and like trekking stay three nights. The Steam Room restaurant was fine for dinner. The breakfast is a la carte buffet, small portions, but you can order as much as you want. The spa is beautiful, but at prices around 300 SGD per hour, I turn into a stingy bastard. Aman had a nice singing bowl performance which was very nice and free. There is no info in the room about activities so be sure to ask a lot of questions to the staff. Service in English on WeChat was almost instant. The recommended Hangzhou House restaurant was the major disappointment. I can live with no English spoken, but not tourist trap food. A bland mushroom dish, a very nice chicken soup with some morels, plain braised beef cubes in brown sauce topped by rosemary, ridiculously few pieces of unshelled crab legs with a lot of soft rice cakes. Two small glasses of flavored alcohol. Lackluster service. Total price for two was SGD 350. A Michelin star on this restaurant is not warranted. No time to try the other Michelin star vegetarian restaurant. Do note that traffic in Hangzhou is terrible. We spent close to two hours in a car from Hangzhou East station.

Surrounded by a perfectly serene environment and supported by attentive housekeeping services, we felt completely at ease throughout our stay. The brekkie and dinner at LAN Xuan were absolutely delicious, and the location offered the best of both worlds — hidden from the crowds yet conveniently close to the temples and Lingyin. Highly recommend to everyone who is a fan of Aman.

First time in Hangzhou, Amanfayun made the trip planning very easy. I had day trips planned with the hotel, with private tour guide & transport (very convenient). I stayed in the Deluxe Village Suite - antique feel, spacious for 2 adults, comfy bed but didn’t like the dim lightings. Hotel was just next to Lingyin temple, very good to visit but super crowded on a weekday. As the hotel allowed access to non-staying guests, there were random people walking around the premise visiting the restaurants or hotel. This didn’t feel exclusive for me. Hotel service was impeccable, buggy rides within the premise were a plus. |Food at Tea House & Hangzhou House were fabulous - food was abundance & served in simplicity (highly recommend).

Increadible hotel - celebrated my birthday and the staff was so kind and generous. The spa treatments are incredible and would so recommend doing the sound bath!

A unique hotel in a beautiful location within the old Longjing tea village. The hotel grounds are within a large and tranquil wooded area very close to the Lingyin temple. It’s about a 20 minute drive from west lake and is such a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Hangzhou. ||The villas are very traditional but with modern Aman styling which works really well. We only stayed 1 night but would have loved to stay longer because we were so comfortable and peaceful. ||We tried the restaurant, spa, pool & also breakfast which were fantastic and would really recommend. We particularly enjoyed the local Hangzhou specialties for breakfast. ||The staff were all so friendly and welcoming, really helpful & nothing was too much trouble.||We would love to stay here again, but for much longer next time!!
