Sri Lanka Is Drawing Visitors After Years of Turmoil — Here's How to Visit

"A historic Galle Fort landmark housed in a building dating to 1684 that has been sensitively refurbished to combine period character (polished teak floors, shuttered windows, four‑poster beds) with contemporary Aman‑brand amenities. The property exudes old-world atmosphere, offers a highly regarded spa and attentive service, and functions as a social hub where guests and locals sometimes gather for drinks and events." - Prasad Ramamurthy Prasad Ramamurthy Prasad Ramamurthy is a former Condé Nast Traveller, India editor with over two decades of reporting experience. Sri Lanka's South Coast Is the Next Great Lifestyle Destination

"A grand hotel in a 17th-century building in Galle, known for its high tea and luxurious accommodations."

Amangalla

"Amangalla breathes luxurious new life into the former New Oriental Hotel, a seventeenth-century colonial gem inside Galle Fort, the UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Amanresorts has turned decay into decadence, restoring the now 28-room hotel and separate two-story house to its long-lost grandeur and adding a celadon pool and a holistic spa. Rooms are an elegant homage to colonial comfort—grand four-posters, long-armed planter’s chairs, and comfy cane chaises—and have no TVs. The service is unrushed but Aman excellent with a discernibly local touch: Mention a favorite dish to your driver and he might well suggest a detour to his mother’s kitchen."

3 Days Around Colombo, Sri Lanka

"Pick a hotel in the heart of the fort: It’s hard to beat Amangalla, Galle’s finest address, for style and history—its origins date back to a Dutch residence from the 1600s."

Amangalla (Galle, South-West Coast) Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In the early years of the millennium, as Sri Lanka was rapidly ascending to its current station as the hip travel destination of the moment, the colonial-era New Oriental Hotel was in rather desperate need of refurbishment. Still, nobody could have dreamed it would turn out quite like this — the Aman chain and the Australian architect Kerry Hill have turned this fading landmark into the best of both worlds, a hotel that’s at once top-shelf luxe boutique and authentic Sri Lankan cultural experience." - Tablet Hotels

We stayed 2 night here at Amangalla in a suite room (#21) as the conclusion of our Sri Lanka trip, and we wouldn't do it any other way. The hotel is steeped in history, it was more like living in a museum rather than staying at a hotel. We love hotels with a sense of place and history, and Amangalla certainly delivers on it. Arrival was a tiny bit chaotic, as far as Amans go, but it's not really a big issue. We were warmly welcomed by our fantastic butler, Bathum, and we did the oil lamp rituals. He then gave us a nice tour around the hotel before showing us our lovely suite (#21), which had a garden view only but it nicely tucked in a corner so it's very quiet and private, which we loved. He also did the galle fort tour and the cinnamon estate visit with us, both of which we would highly recommend. In terms of F&B, this is a stand out and possibly the best of the 9 Amans we have been to, which is quite something because food is normally not the strongest suit for Amans. Late check out and airport transfer were smoothly handled by our butler. We would definitely return to this property again, and will combine it with Amanwella next time.

Had a wonderful afternoon tea there yesterday. Cakes and savouries were delicious. My only gripe is it would have been nice to have the teapot refilled. We had to ask and were charged. Nevertheless, it was a great experience e.

I recently visited amangalla for a drink late afternoon. What a lovely experience it was :) the staff member who served me was amazing! Dumith (and I apologise if this spelling is wrong!) Was so welcoming, friendly, and professional. He is a real asset to the place. My 2 cocktails were delicious, and the environment is absolutely gorgeous. I would highly recommend amangalla 😀

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Amangalla in Galle Fort with one of my German clients, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. This hotel stands as one of the oldest and most iconic properties within the historic Galle Fort, and it beautifully blends colonial-era charm with world-class hospitality. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth and professionalism. The entire team from the front desk to the restaurant staff was attentive, courteous, and consistently exceeded our expectations. My client, who has stayed at many top-tier hotels across the world, was equally impressed by the level of personalized service and attention to detail. The architecture and interiors of Amangalla are something special. The property is rich in history, with antique furniture, wide verandas, high ceilings, and well-preserved colonial touches that transport you back in time. The atmosphere is peaceful and refined, making it a perfect getaway spot right in the heart of the bustling Galle Fort. We spent a relaxing afternoon by the serene pool and enjoyed a delicious meal at the restaurant. The food was outstanding fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The traditional high tea was also a highlight, served on the veranda with views of the charming surroundings. One thing to note for future visitors is that Amangalla does not have its own dedicated parking facility. Since the hotel is located within the narrow streets of the Galle Fort, guests arriving by car may need to park a short distance away and walk to the property. While this wasn’t a major issue for us, it’s something to be aware of if you’re traveling with luggage or require easier access. That said, Amangalla remains one of the finest heritage hotels in Sri Lanka a perfect blend of history, elegance, and comfort. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Galle, whether for leisure or to host special guests. Despite the lack of parking, the overall experience is exceptional and well worth it.

My wife and I just spent three nights at the Amangalla. It was everything we were hoping for and more. The service was absolutely perfect and the grounds were beautiful. It was the perfect end to our vacation in Sri Lanka.

Was here for one night only. Amangalla lies within the ramparts of Sri Lanka’s 17th-century Galle Fort, a Unesco World Heritage Site. With views of the Fort and harbour on one side and the hotel’s lush gardens and swimming pool on the other, the historic residence presents lofty-ceilinged suites, elegant dining and a tranquil experience. All rooms are gig size with high ceilings. Hospitality here is unmatched. Each room has a private butler who is available 24/7 for you. We are pure vegetarian and the chef made dosa and sambhar for us for breakfast and the in the evening tea also we had eggless scones and some nice sandwiches. The sitting are overlooking the street is the best place to enjoy your drinks and meals. Had a great experience

An effortlessly atmospheric, elegant, timeless stay. Unique among Aman properties, this heritage hotel is nevertheless oozing character from the evening live string music to the barbershop. If I imagine what luxury travel must have been like a century ago, this is what I picture: Polished service, decadent food, high beds with excellent mattresses! Pros: - Service: Amans are well-known for the service (even though rumour says their standards globally have slipped noticably as of late), but Amangalla is a time capsule in itself: Attentive butler service with every request attended to. - Charm: Without a doubt the most atmospheric hotel I have ever stayed at, feeling at times almost like an immersive theatre production. - Comfort: The rooms are generously laid out, with ample lounging rooms and supremely comfortable beds. The hydrotherapy suite is a nice plus. Cons: - Brusque security: The typical Aman greeting of "Welcome home Mr/Ms xxx" is replaced with a security guard blocking the front door pointedly (and ineloquently) asking "Yes?! Yes?!" about my intentions to enter the property. I understand that unlike most secluded Aman properties Amangalla is integrated with the fabric of the old city and open to the public, but after my third time in a day being halted by the same guard my patience was running quite thin. Pricing: Amans are quite expensive, but the cost is (usually) justified by the seclusion and exclusivity of the setting. At Amangalla, both are missing (as mentioned before, the main part of the ground floor is open to the public, and the property directly faces a busy main city thoroughfare). Caveat emptor I suppose - personally I found it to be decent value.

We visited the hotel for dinner on our last night in Galle. The atmosphere and quality of the food was excellent and the service impeccable. We were looked after by Sureka, whose service and attention to detail was without fault making her an asset to the team at the hotel. |Whilst we can’t comment on the other services offered by the hotel, we would highly recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a fine dining experience within the Galle Fort precinct.
