Amangalla

We stayed at Amangalla in Sri Lanka last week, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. The hotel itself is stunning, with a timeless colonial elegance that makes you feel as though you’ve stepped into another era — especially while enjoying drinks on the veranda overlooking the historic surroundings. What truly sets this property apart, however, is the exceptional staff. The service was warm, attentive, and flawless from start to finish. Everyone went out of their way to ensure our stay was memorable. The highlight of our 14-day trip to Sri Lanka was a private dinner and cultural performance arranged at the hotel. The entire evening was beautifully executed and deeply special. General Manager Kaya personally made sure this was an unforgettable experience, and his care and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. This was our fourth stay at an Aman property, and once again they exceeded every expectation. Aman continues to define what true luxury hospitality should be. We now plan many of our vacations around staying at their properties. I cannot recommend Amangalla highly enough — a truly first-class experience in every way.

Sureka was very nice and was extremely friendly. She helped us explaining the menu and she was just very clear. We have chosen a rice and curry and myself a tuna fish perfectly cooked by the chef thanks to Sureka. She was smiling, very polite, very well educated as we expect of a place like yours really enjoyed our dinner and stay. The chef made us a little surprise thanks to her for a birthday 🎂 so we were very happy and will come back

This is a lovely colonial and well positioned hotel building in Galle which should be wonderful. Unfortunately, in our opinion, there is a lack of ‘Aman-ness’ with the whole atmosphere of the hotel, along with the attention to detail, being somewhat average. Our suite was austere in that it was not at all relaxing and comfortable. Although it reflects the colonial heritage, it felt like being in a museum. See pictures. The fruit plate was a nice touch though, along with the evening gift on the bed. The outside space was lovely and the guys waiting on were helpful. The pool, however was murky and the tiles slimy. Sadly, the restaurant and service was nowhere near five star. Many items on the breakfast menu were unavailability and the food average. As an example, eggs were either underdone or overcooked. We ate one evening meal in the very quite restaurant. The curry was tasteless and lacking spice- even though we asked for it to be spicy and the other insipid chicken dish was served with an inedible roti. We also tried the afternoon tea once (we could have had four as we were sadly there for four nights) as that was not worth having again. What really stood out, however, were the staff. There were too many standing around and were quite, frankly, clueless. We saw our so called ‘butler’ twice in four days. Having stayed at Amangiri a couple of years ago, the two hotels are poles apart. Aman you can do so much better….

I feel incredibly fortunate to have stayed at many amazing hotels around the world, but this place truly stands out as a special destination. There’s a unique atmosphere in the restaurant terrace, lobby, and corridors, so much history and thoughtful architecture everywhere you look. The service here is exceptional, with the staff going above and beyond, especially the brilliant Japanese/ Turkish general manager, Kaya. If you do visit, make sure to ask for Dammika, the butler, he’s genuinely the sweetest and most helpful person. As always, the Aman brand does not disappoint!

With my friend we dropped in for afternoon tea today. It was an enjoyable relaxing moment with quality products. The icing on the cake was the attentive, efficient service provided by Pramod who was able to answer all our questions about both our tea and the hotel itself.

Old world charm paired with exceptional service. Amangalla is truly beautiful hotel, impeccably maintained, where you can step back in time and savour a drink. We had all the signature drinks and the coconut cake. The cake was nothing exceptional but the drinks especially the cucumber gin drink was brilliant! Special thanks to Nadil for looking after us so well.

I have visited Amangalla several times to meet my clients, and each time I was stopped by the security staff in a manner that felt excessive and disrespectful. I understand the need for security, but the way I was treated made me feel like a criminal rather than a professional guest. This repeated behavior is uncomfortable and unwelcoming, and it reflects poorly on the hotel’s service standards. I hope management will address this and train their staff to treat visitors with more respect and professionalism.

Enjoyed my stay at Amangalla, hotel team were attentive and warm at all times. Restaurant’s architecture is charming and the food was tasty. The pool is in the courtyard, peaceful and quiet. For a short transit before heading to Amanwella , Amangalla is perfect!
