"For those enamored of First World comforts, traveling the circuit of five Amankoras will be the only way to see the world’s last surviving Himalayan Buddhist kingdom—a heady mix of disquieting verticality, palpable spiritual energy, and unrivaled exclusivity. Apart from experiencing the trademark Aman treatment (flawless service, understated luxe surroundings), guests are furnished with a guide and driver—essential in a country traversed mainly via a single-lane, guardrail-less road bracketed by a sheer cliff face and a precipitous drop-off. Above all, what a ticket aboard the Aman express buys is access: no chorten, nunnery, temple, or dzong (the nation’s signature fortress-monasteries) is off-limits. And in a country widely thought to have the world’s worst cuisine, chef Patrick Sullivan’s yak specialities are itself worth the trip. The five lodges are in Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Gangtey, and Bumthang."

This review is long overdue as our visit was in November 2024 but the memories of this bucket list trip remains fresh as we recall the happy smiling faces and the wonderful hospitality of our hosts at the various Aman lodges we stayed on our 2 week adventure. The 1st stop on our Bhutan sojourn was Thimphu. Arriving at Paro airport, we were met by our guide Tashi and driver Ugyen whom we immediately felt a connection with - warm, smiling and welcoming. Tashi was a wealth of information and over the next 2 weeks, we got to know each other as friends. Presented with a beautiful folder containing all the information, details, map and itinerary of our trip, we knew it was going to be a trip of a lifetime. Amankora Thimphu was most definitely a good place to start; arriving at the lodge, we were met by the host Kinley who ensured that we had everything we needed. Despite being older, Thimphu is an understatement of quiet luxury and everything was beautifully maintained. Meals could be adjusted to whatever you wanted - simple and fresh or full on fine dining. We visited the gardens where we were introduced to the organic farming practised by the gardener who tended to everything with such love and care - no wonder everything tasted so fresh and sweet! We even collected our own freshly laid eggs which we had for breakfast. Rose, the manager was very hands on and made sure we were looked after. The rooms are large, airy and bright when all the blinds are opened up but in the evenings we felt the lighting was a little too subdued and could have been a little brighter but this was a minor issue that did not bother us. The beds are heavenly and the bath tub is filled each evening so you return to the room and can have a nice soak. We spent 2 blissful nights here and mornings included yoga or meditations sessions and after breakfast (choices of local delicacies or the usual breakfast fare of eggs and bacon) days were filled with short hikes and excursions and our evenings were around the fire and on 1 evening, a wonderful cultural dance show put up by the local villages - everything was arranged to be so personal and inclusive. Nothing was ever too much trouble and the hosts and staff were so obliging and made sure your every need is looked after (the little angels from housekeeping keep everything in your room perfectly neat and tidy without you even noticing). What a wonderful start to our trip and we knew it was simply going to get better as we moved on to the other 4 Amankora lodges.Thank you to the team of Amankora Thimphu for a great stay and setting the bar so high. Such a pleasure and only after 2 days, we felt so at home and a little sad to be leaving. Our next stop was Punakha - subject to a separate review.

Words and pictures will not do justice for a place like this. Amankora Bhutan has blown my expectations away…from the customized, attentive detailed service to the rooms, dining experience, evening activities, etc. Each and every one of the AK members has been exceptional. This has certainly set a very high standard of care of what a getaway should look and feel like. All the hotel managers (apologies if I can’t remember some of the names) but Karma, Rose, Phuntsho and more have been amazing! So heartwarming to hear that the AK fam celebrated their 20th anniversary last year and it clearly shows why. 🥳🥰

Truly unbelievable and very personal. Spent 2 nights here as part of my Cultural Sojourn package and was very impressed by the house programming, quality of the F&B, personalised and intimate service, as well as the guide. Everything about it was a dream come true. Very glad I chose Amankora for my Bhutanese visit!

Enjoyed our stay. Thanks to Keely, Rose, Ugyen, Kinley and rest of the gracious staff for making our visit so indulgent. Aman never ceases to amaze with attentive, friendly attention to every little request/need.

Despite its more remote location, this is another fabulous place to call home for a few days. As is the case throughout an Amankora journey, the service is exceptional. All the staff know your name and which activities you're doing each day. Hiking boots are cleaned, help us offered at every turn and the meals are incredible. Make sure to do the Bhutanese set menu at least once (or more) while at any of the Amankora lodges.

This resort might be a little bit old compared to the other but it’s still a resort definitely worthy of its name and price. All of the staffs were attentive. High quality service and lot of food options. Additionally we’ve also accidentally saw the 5th king of Bhutan while we were having our dinner there. And there was also a cute dog basking under the sun in the morning

Visited back in 2015. Authentic and lovely experience. Lives up to the Aman standards. Great hospitality by the team. Food is delicious. We like to eat local where possible and they did great renditions of Bhutanese food (less spicy for our palette) We also had a customised picnic one of the days. I love their personalised turn down service.

We stayed two nights at this lovely hotel in December 2023. The hotel has an unusual and very interesting design. It feels a bit like a fortress (in a good way). The rooms are spacious with a shower that has higher water pressure than any shower I’ve ever been in before. The staff is wonderful and welcoming. Highly recommend.
