Amanwella

"Beach bunnies will find their Valhalla at Amanwella: All 30 spacious rooms have unobstructed views of the crescent bay, thanks to sliding glass doors that line their two sea-facing sides. Neutral fabrics and fantail coconut-wood furniture create an understated chic without distracting from the stunning scenery. Staff, elegantly attired in sarongs of amethyst and emerald, carry on Aman’s service tradition. The main pool stretches toward infinity on not one but three sides, providing a satisfying swimming alternative to the bay’s sometimes strong currents. Best to arrive by seaplane, as it’s a long six-hour drive from Colombo."

After staying at Amangalla, which was absolutely fantastic, we came to Amanwella. We were a little apprehensive after having had such a great time at the first hotel. But Amanwella was great, too! The architecture by famous Australian, Kerry Hill, is stunning and smack dab in the middle of a dreamy tropical beach! The infinity pool cantilevers over the serene and gorgeous view, with beautiful sunsets a-plenty. We enjoyed spending time in the attractive library, read and saw books on local history, to Nixon. The whole place was immaculate. We really enjoyed our safari to Yala National Park. Rujitha and an our driver Chummly accompanied us and they were awesome! Thank you guys! We had a blast! We saw monkeys, elephants and even a leopard! We got very lucky. ||We enjoyed the food and the people who served us in the two restaurants and the people at the front desk and even the tuk tuk drivers. We happily did yoga everyday! We also went up to the rock temple. Definitely got our steps in for the month, but it was worth it.||Our room was large, comfortable, and beautiful with a great view of the ocean. ||We can’t say enough about the place. It’s relaxing and beautiful and the people who work there are both well trained but also kind. If you go, don’t forget to eat the ice cream! Honestly the best we’ve ever had. We also took a great cooking class with the Executive Sous Chef, who was patient, friendly and knowledgeable. So fun and interesting. We enjoyed the musicians, too! We had fun meeting a few of the other guests, and ended up having very interesting conversations with people from the other side of the world. But it’s also a place you could go and if you wanted to , you could just spend time quietly by yourself.||Highly recommend Amanwella. We will treasure our memories forever.

My husband and I took my parents to Amanwella and Amangalla for Thanksgiving. Both were amazing, offering a nice contrast in experiences. Amanwella is a stunning property, with beautiful architecture, an impressive pool, and spacious rooms. Our second-level room overlooked the water, with a private plunge pool in a front courtyard. We shared a patio with my parents' room, offering both connection and privacy.||What sets Aman apart is its exceptional service, and Amanwella was no exception. We loved our butler, Rujitha, driver, Chamly, and the entire team, including Omila, Niroshan, Dinusha, and Piyumi. We practiced yoga each morning with Amal, who was great, and my mom and I enjoyed a private cooking class with Executive Sous Chef Priyantha. Munga gave an amazing massage, though the spa operates out of two hotel rooms, lacking facilities like a sauna or cold plunge (a minor detail, really).||We also did a safari at Yala, where we spotted a leopard and several elephant families. Chamly and our safari guide were fantastic at finding the animals.||Thanks to the wonderful staff at Amanwella for making this such a memorable holiday. We’ll definitely return! xx

Horrendously rude and aggressive hotel staff. I was sunbathing on the public side of the beach and one of the hotel security guards approached me as soon as my fiancee went for a swim and started to harass me. I was alone and he kept asking me whether I was available and would I marry him. Despite telling him I was in a relationship he continued to stand over me trying his luck. Whilst this was taking place, a huge wave took all our possessions which led to my camera breaking. The security guard did not appear to care, did not help me retrieve our things but instead continued to ask whether I would marry him. I ran away to find my fiancee totally shaken by the encounter. When we later went to complain to hotel management, they were very unhelpful and not at all apologetic. The hotel staff really ruin this beach. I strongly urge female travellers to stay close to others on the beach so no one has to face this harassment in the future from these guards. The hotel made it quite clear they did not see a problem with their staff and failed to reimbursement me for the broken camera which was their fault. The way they dealt with this incident from their own employees was disgraceful.

This was my 6th Aman experience and not the best one. ||The positive’s: I arrived in the evening so didn’t get a sense of how stunning the beach was. One of the best I have seen in Sri Lanka was a combination of golden sands, blue water and palm trees. Grounds are nice, villas are posh GM Carl, checks on you daily. There was a strong start to the Aman hospitality at check-in. They do not have TVs and their response was, we will happy to instal one. The food was really good in both the beach club and the main restaurant. ||The reality: Activities are hit or miss due to weather, I appreciate the effort to make sure everything is great, but you need to make the decision to go forward with an experience more than 2 hours before you go. City tour was off brand and the transfers were both bad. ||The negatives: Going to the hotel the driver was speeding in the rain, coming back another driver had no clue where he was going. We messaged our butler and he basically said he wasn’t working for another 3 hours (not what you want to hear). We stopped at the other Aman to grab a drink and use the facilities. We ran into another manager from Amanwella. He said he came to check on us which was really nice, but he didn’t talk to the driver or see us off to make sure the 2nd half of the drive went smoothly. Which it didn’t.

My only notes would be that they need to work on being welcoming to the local taxi drivers upon arrival, everyone should be treated with respect. A slight issue with the hot water not being entirely reliable for our showers but other than this the place is beautiful and the staff very friendly and helpful

Absolutely disgusting actions by hotel. This hotel has security guards all over the beach which completely spoils the feel. What you don’t see in the photos is they own practically all the back of the beach where the palm trees are, accompanied by aggressive signs saying no trespassers and more security guards. THEN!! They fumigated their property, which sits directly on the beach where all the public were sitting. They did this at 5:30pm when there were still many members of the public watching the sunset. Considering tourists have died in the last couple of days as a result of fumigation in another part of the country, we were absolutely appalled!! No respect for the beach or public! Spoiled a beautiful beach.

DONT STAY HERE! Anantara next door is much better. I had cockroaches in my room. The food is overpriced and just bad. Theyre too greedy to invest into high quality food. And the worst: at the beach the rude security guards tell other people to leave the beach, acting like its Aman private property. By Sri lankan law there is no private beaches. The main waiter/server at the beach js a very rude person. The lifeguard too…

Our stay at Amanwella was absolutely flawless. From the welcoming and highly attentive staff to the impeccable service in the restaurant and spa, everything was perfectly orchestrated. Kerry Hill’s architectural masterpiece, maintained to the highest standards with recent renovations, retains its timeless elegance even after more than two decades. The serene design, breathtaking infinity pool, and stunning beach created an unforgettable experience. Amanwella truly captures the essence of luxury and tranquility.
