Our 4-night stay was kind of a mixed experience, but definitely the most disappointing out of the 5 Aman properties we have stayed at so far. When your beach resort vacation unexpectedly turns into a safari…
Will start from the best:
Beach - the beach was very beautiful (albeit public), although the waves were huge and not suitable for kids. The pool was basic but nice.
Service - our butler was very attentive and detailed-oriented. The other guest-facing staff members were also friendly, but not the most efficient. We did find it challenging at times communicating in English with a few of the staff. But we score this a 4 instead of a 5 because the cleaning staff seems to leave the sliding doors open for the mosquitoes to come in.
Hotel - the design aesthetics are top notch, very beautiful. But the property is on a hillside and requires riding tuk tuks to get around— especially for elderly guests. And sometimes the tuk tuk don’t show up as requested. The hotel could do having a gym. Members of our party also enjoyed the spa.
Food - surprisingly bad for the price. Only one restaurant on site plus the beach club. The private bbq on the beach was nice, but lots of bugs.
Room - not the nicest villa, leaving lots to be desired. The ocean facing deck is nice, but too many bugs to really lounge around there. The small pool is more of a breeding ground for mosquitoes, in my opinion. The rooms is a basic studio with a partition between the sleeping area and the bathroom area. The biggest flaw is that there are mostly sliding doors facing the ocean and the pool, with gaps at the bottom for bugs to crawl in.
Hopefully it is by now clear that insects INSIDE THE ROOMS are the biggest problem with this hotel. We have found inside the room one scorpion, two grasshoppers, one centipede, a few spiders, mosquitoes and ants. The last three wanted to get cozy in our bed. Dead spiders and grasshoppers need the Mr. Wolf treatment before ants come to dispose of the bodies. By the pool, we have also seen frogs, monitor lizards, geckos and mosquitoes— they were lovely except the mosquitoes, but as I said, the problem was with the bugs inside.
You know it is bad when you start checking inside the toilet bowl and under the seat before sitting down. Not to mention spraying copious amounts of mosquitoes repellent on the comforter and around the bed, and cranking up the A/C so we can sleep while fully covered, yet still get 1-2 mosquito bites each night.
In long sleeves
When you stay at an Aman, and pay for an Aman, you expect all the details to be taken care of. This was not the case with Amanwella. The only upshot is that I had never seen a scorpion before!
