A Culinary Quest to Calabria Reveals an Unexpected Side of Italy - AFAR

"We visited the famed licorice company Amarelli, which has operated out of the same stone factory since the 1700s, where the gnarled roots of the licorice plant are boiled, their juices extracted and reduced to a black tar before being flavored and shaped and packaged in elegant tins and pastel-hued boxes." - Freda Moon

I had a beautiful experience here. I visited the old factory and the new one. The museum is also a nice place that shows the story of the familiar business over the years.

It is well known that the best liquorice comes from Calabria and the best Calabrian liquorice is the Amarelli one ... should I say more?? ;)

Yelp
Amarelli is a Family Owned Business in the 14th generation. Licorice is produced with natural resources. 2015: There are 40 employees to run production. There is a museum that has won the Guggenheim price. It is very nice and interesting. We had the opportunity to also see the production and get a factory tour and we met the friendly owner. There is an only shop on the premises where you can grab an espresso with licorice and buy some of the products. Products otherwise are sold worldwide but only in special stores.

Yelp
This gift shop is run either using racist policies or racist people. When visiting as part of a group this summer, a member of our group was denied access to the bathroom. As a black man, he was told to use the bathroom across the parking lot. Others in our group were able to use the bathroom no problem. A door was slammed, and no one knew why. We found later that he was not allowed to use the bathroom in the gift shop because of his black ethnicity. What a terrible shop.
