Ambassador Hotel is part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, which aims to present quality, bold originality, rich character, and uncommon details, according to Marriott's website where I ripped these descriptors off from.
Ambassador has a very sexy vibe to it, with the purples and blacks and whites balanced throughout the rooms. A mixture of funky, curvy furniture balanced with hard edges of the tables and bathrooms strike a certain zen. It's an extremely relaxing atmosphere. The entrance is dark and opulent, and the entire hotel is small enough so you aren't making long treks from the front door to your room (although the elevators are extremely slow). Like the slowness of the elevators, combined with the romantic mood of the hotel, might give you the idea to- uh, never mind.
It's definitely along the most relaxing hotels I have been in, and I'm totally falling for the marketing that Marriott is putting forth about the Autograph Collection. If you're in town for something at the Kansas City Convention Center, it's a bit of a walk (about six or seven blocks). If you're here for business, you'll be within reasonable distance for everywhere else downtown, probably. If you're in Kansas City for any other reason, I have no idea why. The Streetcar doesn't extend out of downtown, so don't expect any particular value from that. Restaurants downtown are fairly limited here, in my opinion. Although I would recommend the restaurant inside the hotel: The Reserve.
Depending on what you're doing in Kansas City, I would price shop around the city before settling downtown. Kansas City is widespread geographically, but it's easily navigable by car. Everything is connected by interstates and most of the city is on a rigid grid. Maybe I'm jaded because I live in KC, but $200+ per night for a hotel in this city seems insane, to me.
Also, it's not a tall hotel, in case you like high floors, you snob. I like high floors, too. Takes one to know one, right?
