Great choice if you need to be near the Consulate — just a short 6-minute walk away. The location is truly unbeatable. The room was comfortable with clean linens, fresh towels, and a well-kept washroom (new fixtures, clean tub/sink, good water pressure). The bed was very comfortable, and the overall feel of the hotel is charming — like staying in an old mansion with interesting architecture. That said, there are quite a few stairs if your room is higher up, and the hotel could benefit from some finishing touches (carpets and baseboards). Some surfaces like bedside tables could use more frequent dusting, but for the price and location, it’s hard to complain. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the café on site was a nice bonus — the blueberry muffin we tried was excellent. We were also able to get one of the limited parking spots, which made things convenient. Overall, it’s not luxury, but it’s a solid, good-value option in a safe neighbourhood with a lot of character. If you’re looking for practicality, comfort, and location without a high nightly rate, this is a great choice.

I stayed at Hotel Ambrose for 3 nights, and while the building has charm, my experience with management was nothing short of a mess — the kind of stress you don’t expect when you’re simply trying to enjoy a trip. I booked my stay a month in advance, relying on their website’s very clear promise: “book now, pay later.” It also stated that my card would only be charged 24 hours before arrival. But instead of following their own policy, they charged me the moment I booked — instantly, without warning. This wasn’t just annoying. It caused real inconvenience because the card I used was already tied up with another expense at the time. That early charge threw everything off… and instead of helping, management made the situation ten times worse. When I reached out for clarification, the responses I received were shockingly rude and cold. On the phone and over email, the attitude was the same: dismissive, unprofessional, and sounding like they couldn’t care less about the impact their mistake had on me. No apology. No accountability. Not even basic courtesy. Just attitude. The stay itself was fine, but the way management handled this issue left me genuinely frustrated. A small problem turned into a full-blown ordeal because the people in charge couldn’t be bothered to treat a guest with respect — or to follow the policy they posted online. Hotel Ambrose may look cozy and welcoming on the outside, but the way they treat guests behind the scenes is a completely different story. If you value honesty, transparency, and customer service that doesn’t make you feel like you’re an inconvenience, I’d seriously reconsider booking here.

The place is cute and cozy, not going to lie. The lady at the counter was extremely helpful the night I stayed there. My one complaint is that I was due a tiny refund and no one could be bothered to hear me out. I had called to ask about room prices, location, etc. and was given a price for the night. The e-mail confirmation had a price that was $10 more. I called to get that changed. I was asked to e-mail instead. I did. No reply. Days go by. I get to the hotel to find out myself in a room with a double bed instead of the queen I had asked for. Manager wasn't on site. Left a hand-written note followed by another e-mail asking to please put the original price back and possibly a small refund for the smaller bed. A day later I got a reply stating I would get no such thing. It's just $10, but the principal of the thing is that mistakes were made and no one could be accountable for them. Now I can't go back to this very lovely hotel.

it was within walking distance to McGill University, the Underground City, Eaton Center, Peel Street metro station, a number of restaurants and pubs, etc.||It is an old building with a lot of charm and character, and I found it to be comfortable. The location was perfect -- easy walking distance to everything (and if you want to venture a little farther, the Peel Street metro station is nearby). I especially loved the cafe -- fresh pastries and a good cup of coffee were a great way to start my day! We also enjoyed hanging outside on the patio; the weather was perfect so we were able to do so!

FYI, this "house" is more akin to a nice hostel. I would have loved it in my 20s when I was backpacking because the location is great, but it was just a different vibe than what I wanted and thought I was going to get from the website. More on what I mean: there is no elevator to rooms on the upper floors (3). Check in is at the cafe downstairs and the key comes in a worn out envelope that doesn't seem to have been changed in years. The room itself was spare and old but clean, and the bathroom was new. The linens were worn (the pillowcase had a hole in it) and hallways and common areas were pretty stark. The wifi didn't work. I ended up checking out early and they didn't offer a refund, which is 100% their priority but aligns with the general lack of understanding of customer service here.

This is a very European-feeling shabby chic hotel in a great location if you want to explore Montreal on foot. The lobby coffee shop is legit and the espresso is good. It opens at 8M. Rooms are quite pretty. Note that bath towels are provided, but not washcloths. Our room was air-conditioned and the AC was nice and powerful. Street parking is extremely difficult. Reserve one of the very limited number of hotel parking spots if you can. It's something like $30 a day as of summer 2025 and that price is absolutely worth it as parking is nightmare in this bustling part of town. We had to park a few blocks away in a private pay garage. We stayed two nights at the Ambrose and would definitely return.

A nice place for the cost. Rooms are simple and fine. Service is friendly and bilingual. Parking situation around the hotel is a bit of a pain - if you can’t reserve a spot at their lot there are only a couple spots you can park in overnight along the road, otherwise you’ve got to find a private garage somewhere else in the neighborhood. The location isn’t bad if you’re planning to spend most of your time downtown or along the waterfront, but we found ourselves shuttling back and forth between the hotel and the Plateau/ Mile End neighborhoods, so we’ll probably look for accommodation over there next time we visit Montreal.

For the price point I was very disappointed. Reception was under staffed and run by students (only 1 at a time). Two flights of very narrow stairs with worn and grubby carpet to get to my worn, small bedroom. Cracked toilet, grubby walls, no tea/coffee - just 1 bottle of water was offered over 4 nights. No cleaning was done - you have to ask to have the room serviced apparently. I definitely won't be going back.|Apparently this is a budget hotel (the person on reception told me) - but I did not pay budget prices....
