We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast today at American Slang! Absolutely perfect! It is located inside a lovely hotel in Kansas City. It is gorgeous. Service was excellent. Our server was very observant & courteous. She did a great job! Our meals were so pretty & delicious! I tried the French Toast with fresh berries. Just fabulous! He had traditional eggs, potatoes, bacon, 🥓 & toast. He loved it. He was so excited they offered small jars of jams. Orange 🍊 marmalade was one & he loved it! We would happily go again!

Writing, first of all, to compliment the exemplary service of Brooke: our server. My family has a lot of different, contradictory wants and needs; Brooke handled all requests with efficiency and good humor. In addition, the second time we showed up for breakfast, Brooke remembered our preferences: that’s just a WOW. 🤩 Thank you Brooke 😃😃😃 My Power Protein bowl was Noms, will have it again and specifically ask for Brooke as my server next time I am in town. Excellent food, excellent service.

Staff members (Sebastian and Melanie, I believe?) were helpful, attentive, and friendly. Atmosphere was very nice with pleasant lighting and local artists works featured throughout. Food was all delicious with good portions sizes. Cocktails are creative & delicious. Parking was easy and the views from the dining area are fantastic. Highly recommend American Slang!

For for cost to stay for a convention, I would expect a restaurant in an upscale hotel to meet expectations. Waited an hour and 45 minutes for a party of 8. Only two other couples were dining. They were seated after us and served before us. Our food came out dish by dish… and three of the seven were cold. (The other was a salad.) Two dishes came out steaming hot. One was simple chicken fingers and fries. The other three were the BBQ platters and they looked like they had forgotten to microwave the left overs they were serving my guests. We chose to not eat any more meals at the hotel.

Just stopped in for coffee after our morning walk and Tracey was our barista. She was very friendly and quickly whipped up two delicious iced lattes. So nice to have good coffee and great service right here at the hotel.

We had a large party, and they were able to get us in for dinner on a Sunday evening. Our server was Alex , and he did a fantastic job handling our table, with assistance from Kylie. The staff was upfront with us that the kitchen was a bit short staffed that evening, and the food could take a bit longer than normal, which we all appreciated knowing in advance. The food was quite good, there is a nice variety and really something for everyone on the menu. The dining room has excellent views of the Plaza lights as well!

Google
Loud in the restaurant so I ordered room service. It was more difficult than it should be to order roomservice but it was here extremely fast. I don't like chocolate so I ordered the funnelcake dessert with raspberry and vanilla sauce....it came with raspberry and chocolate sauce so I didn't get to eat it. I was incredibly bummed. The grilled cheese with pear and bree was pretty good. The develed eggs were amazing though.

Google
This was a very, very nice hotel. Clean, spacious and very well decorated.. having said that there were a few less than ideal things :The layout was rather confusing at first, so if you are attending a conference here like I was, the layout can take some getting used to. Also, the credit card machines at the bar went out as well as the hotel wifi (affected the entire Kansas City area) so not much to be done there , I'm just stating facts. Lastly, there was no gift shop or anything to buy Ibrpofin or Tylenol. So I had to walk a ways to get to a store for those items. Four stars out of five

Yelp
Service is good as far as hotel restaurants go. It's not a fine dining experience, but the food is a couple of steps up from most hotel spots. The view of Plaza is nice if you sit near the windows or out on the patio. Excellent bar, great space to chat with colleagues after a meeting or conference. I had the stuffed salmon, which comes on a really delicious bed of risotto. The espresso martini I had was one of the best although it didn't have a coffee bean. The chocolate torte is inexpensive and decadent. Overall a good place!

Yelp
We enjoyed the food and drinks and the atmosphere was lovely. The real star of the experience was our server, Tracy H. She was phenomenal! Kind, attentive, prompt, and even engaged with our kids, giving them bracelets with kind words on them. She deserves a raise!

Yelp
Very nice and clean, food and service is superb. Ambiance is great. We will return, right in the Plaza

Yelp
Joe, the bar manager makes an incredible Old Fashioned, perhaps the best I've had in the city. The rest of the bar staff is amazing as well. Can't wait to be back there at Christmas.

Yelp
Some friends and I got together last weekend at American Slang for a reunion. We had a wonderful lunch made even better by the warm and personalized service offered by our server, Jen. Thank you for a terrific afternoon!

Yelp
My fiancé and I came here for Sunday brunch and weren't too impressed. Service was great and friendly, and the view of the plaza was lovely. The music was good also. However, the food was average. I ordered the quiche with a side salad. The quiche was very thin and did not contain much egg. I don't think I would have known it was quiche if it hadn't been listed as such. The arugula salad looked amazing but it was coated in salt. I couldn't even eat it, because it was so salty and not good. Putting salt on a salad defeats its nutritiousness. My fiancé ordered the eggs Florentine which was much better. We also ordered a side of wheat toast which was good.

Yelp
This review is for the afternoon tea. I went with a group of ladies for a birthday at 1pm on a Thursday. The restaurant was pretty quiet, only a few patrons. The set up is lovely, light and airy, and our service was wonderful. We found the trays of sweets, scones, and tea sandwiches to be good! The scones and pumpkin/banana bread were our favorite, the petit fours and various other desserts were beautiful and delicious. The sandwiches left something to be desired, but we were there for the experience, so we overlooked that. Tea service was fine. Like another person mentioned, I was surprised that they served Tazo tea...I expected something fancier. We chose the option that came with a glass of brut, so for $37pp, you're definitely going for the experience. BUT we had a LOT of treats leftover, so they get props for portions!

Yelp
This beautiful restaurant, located in the Intercontinental Hotel across the Plaza is often overlooked. The interior transports you to a Parisian setting, and their service is impeccable. They were accommodating to a larger party of guests and even gave my friends and me a separate room. We came here to try their Restaurant Week Lunch Menu which was good but nothing extremely noteworthy. I enjoyed the salad as it contained beets but both the salad and main dish of chicken were pretty standard. The chicken with mashed potatoes reminded me of a Thanksgiving meal and did not have any outstanding flavors. The carrot cake was yummy but again nothing too special. While I enjoyed the atmosphere and the spectacular view of the Plaza, the subpar food would keep me from returning.

Yelp
Just on a whim, Hubby and I drove to KC from St. Louis for a 2 night getaway and stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel, which houses American Slang. After reading the prior reviews, we were not planning to visit this particular restaurant. The Intercontinental upgraded us to the Concierge floor where breakfast is served for free, but one morning we were told to hit the front desk up for free breakfast coupons to American Slang, so we obliged. VERY glad this happened! It was around 9:30am and the restaurant was not busy. We were appropriately greeted and promptly seated by a window overlooking the corner courtyard and (with a big smile) provided an insulated carafe of surprisingly delicious coffee. Our friendly server filled our mugs and gave us time to make our selections. We ordered the eggs Benedict (to share) and 2 sides of fresh fruit, one was all berries and the other was a few berries with various melon chunks. We ordered wisely! The Benedict was served with a side of crisp browned potatoes and was more than enough for 2 people! The eggs were perfectly cooked and the hollandaise was fresh, buttery and plentiful just the way I prepare it at home. I'm always happy when there's enough hollandaise to saturate my toasted English muffin! The fruit servings were more than generous and divinely FRESH. There were no rogue squishy berries and the cut-up melon had crisp edges. Even though the coffee carafe was on the table, our server made sure to refill our mugs and expertly tended to us. We love to linger over coffee to discuss our upcoming day and even after the plates were cleared away, our server continued to refill our coffee and water encouraging us to "chillax" and take in the view. We will be back! KC has a wonderful "foodie scene" and American Slang fits right in.

Yelp
Don't waste your money here! We picked it because it was convenient (being in our hotel) and the menu online seemed good. The menu they are actually serving right now is nowhere near as good. The best part was the charcuterie plate (which is pretty hard to mess up meat and cheese). The steak was very underwhelming and needed salt, Texas Roadhouse is way better and half the price. The burger was awful, bland and the melted cheese on top was cold and hard. Our waitress was more interested in over-serving the drunk guy at the table next to us who was flirting with her (guess she thought he'd tip more?). I'm not sure how he got so drunk, our drinks were weak despite premium prices. We stopped back in for breakfast (our mistake). The pancakes were ok, the Benedict was underwhelming and small. The coffee was biter and I had to use a ton of cream and sugar to make it drinkable.

Yelp
Nice environment & service. Good food. Had the smoked salmon bagel and Kansas City breakfast.

Yelp
Review is for the Afternoon Tea service. For $28/person for the traditional service - I expected better quality. Their tea is just a tea bag from Tazo, a very subpar tea brand if you're into tea. But if you're not, it's not a big deal. The sandwiches were very plain as well and you can taste the bread not being fresh. What makes up for it is the decor of the restaurant and the view. It's a worthwhile experience and a good introductory to the world of afternoon tea, but not exceptional.

Yelp
I only had wine after a rough day but Rob was great! He heard me cough and actually made me a cup of warm water with lemon and honey. I think that kind of service deserves recognition. I do hope his management sees and acknowledges this. Thanks Rob for the great service & nice conversation.

Yelp
Super impressed! The customer service was great. They took the time to go through the menu to help with my dietary allergies. I ordered the Cobb salad and it was one of the best salads I have had in a long time! I should have taken a picture, but I was too hungry. I would visit again.

Yelp
It's been a while since I stopped in at the Oak Room but was pleased to see a refresh of the design in the way of American Slang. Not much has changed behind the bar in terms of selection or service, but do appreciate the cleaner, brighter look.

Yelp
Completely overpriced for pre-made microwaved dishes. Very disappointed in the Chicken Brasserie. The food was not fresh and served at barely warm with a microwaved meat flavor. My daughter had the filet mignon which was good and prepared correctly but the side vegetables (aparagus) were soggy and over done. I had the chicken sandwich which was good but overall the price for the entrees was disappointing for the product received. Stick to the sandwiches if you're going to eat here.

Yelp
Beautiful venue, called in 48 hours in Advanced to have the high tea, was utterly confused as we were given a tea menu then when server came back informed us none of the teas on the list were actually available? Why have a menu then? Was Instantly Disappointed As I Am A Tea connoisseur the point of high tea is the TEA! We were brought out a selection of Tazo tea. As for the edibles all were fresh except for the macaroons they were disgusting, server described are scones as raspberry when in fact were dried cherry, and described the bread as pistachio when in fact it was pumpkin with walnuts, so staff basically had no idea what the hell they were talking about! .We basically made the best out of situation laughing hysterically that our server had no idea what they were talking about!! Kind of shocking actually!

Yelp
Great view of the Plaza. Have Starbucks coffee. Here for about 5 hours for a work meeting. Lamb meatballs are a must! Stayed for happy hour, good wine list, good bartender, good cheese plate. Solid place if you are staying at/visiting the Intercontinental.

Yelp
Such a horrible experience. I ordered the salmon. It was supposed to come with quinoa. I pointed out to the waitress that there was supposed to be quinoa and there wasn't and she argued with me about it being there. This was followed up by actually "eating" the food and having to stop due to completely raw salmon. By this time I was so irritated I was just ready to leave. The waitress came, say that I hardly touched my food and didn't even comment about it. $35 spent for bad service and bad food. I suggest spending your money somewhere else.

Michael K.

Yelp
Worst service I've ever had. Stood at the bar to get a drink and bartenders completely ignored me. Will not be back and will not recommend anyone go there.

Yelp
Freezing cold, relatively empty restaurant, poor wait staff, fairly decent food but seemingly overpriced. Very long wait times as well, seemed understaffed.

Yelp
I made my reservation via open table and had my pick of times for dinner. The restaurant was practically empty at 7:00 on a Saturday evening. So, we decided to take a seat outside. I ordered a whiskey sour and my husband ordered a beer. It took 15 minutes to get the drinks because the waitress had forgotten my husbands selection. I ordered the Brasserie burger and my husband ordered the steak. Both entrees were okay but the fries that came with both were soggy and greasy. I was starving so I ate the fries. I won't be back as there is nothing outstanding about the restaurant. To sum it up.... MEH.

D N.

Yelp
Slow service, uninspired entrees, overpriced salads ($13 for a dinner salad, really?), weak libations, oversalted veggies, dry lobster pot pie. Forgot to serve the mussels we ordered, but put it on the bill anyway. The manager tried to give us a 10% discount, then the waiter presented the check for 50% MORE than our original bill. Long wait to get that corrected, and a guitar/singer in the lounge that we thought must be a karioke participant. Wow...not going there again.

Jane B.

Yelp
Our dinner here with family from out of town was quite disappointing. The atmosphere is sterile and the room was freezing. The food and service were average at best. The cocktails are uninspired yet expensive and wine list leaves much to be desired. The chef was unable to accommodate even the simplest allergy requests as many items are pre-prepped so not much creativity evident in the kitchen. One in our group ordered the filet mignon which came out looking like a small thin overcooked cut similar to what you'd expect from a family style buffet. I will say the manager was gracious but this alone cannot make up for such a disappointing meal. We should have done our research before securing this reservation. I'd recommend it only for a quick lunch but with so many great options on the plaza - why bother.

Katie L.

Yelp
Best modern French restaurant in town, upscale and fantastic atmosphere. I would not say it's not pricey, but the quality of food and plating is amazing. Burrata and goat cheese croquettes were really good appetizers, as well as quiche and beef short ribs. Lovely view of the plaza. I came back after my first visit during restaurant week, and plans to come back again soon.

John K.

Yelp
The new chef and the newly redesigned restaurant here at The Intercontinental is AMAZING. The food speaks for itself. I had the salmon and my friend Richard Roundtree had the French dip. We were both extremely pleased. The salmon was cooked to perfection. I strongly recommend checking this place out.

Nick T.

Yelp
I can't say enough about this place. The atmosphere is fantastic, the drink selection is impressive, and the food. Man, the food. We decided to celebrate an anniversary here, and the staff took at the steps to make sure that we had made the right decision. Kudos to the Chef, as the impressive menu and the food quality will have us back for sure.

Matt M.

Yelp
We went to check this place out for restaurant week and were underwhelmed. The experience started off awkward with us coming into the restaurant on the bar side which is on the other end where the hostess and main entrance is. The bartenders just looked at us and eventually pointed to where the hostess was. Our fault I guess but I think there should be clear signage or something to direct where to go if you do happen to enter on the wrong end. We sat and ordered quickly, I got the lamb meatballs which were delicious then had the duck confit for my entree. It was alright, the duck itself wasn't bad but the polenta was bland and the figs were an odd pairing in my opinion. Our server brought us apple tarts for dessert even though we ordered the coffee gelato but we ate the tarts anyway which actually were the highlight of the meal, very good. The server realized his mistake and brought us the gelato which was nice. Overall service seemed off, our waters were empty the majority of the meal with a lot of staff walking by us seeing we needed water but not refilling them. Just because it's not your table doesn't mean you can't help out. Also, the atmosphere reminded me of a cafeteria for some reason, I know that's weird as hell but for some reason it did. Anyway, lots of little stuff but the food was decent but nothing special, and I think there needs to be more training on the service side of things. Will I be back? Doubtful.
