My wife and I just completed a stay at the Steigenberger Bellerive au Lac Hotel in Zurich! With some History of our trip you will understand our "rather negative attitude" staying at this Hotel.
We made our reservation, some 6 months prior, through our Travel Agent, in Lincoln, California. We chose the Pay Now Price, which allows no cancellation, for two nights stay, checking in April 8th, and out April 10th.
Our trip was to start with the Viking Ocean Cruise Ship SKY on March 27th, 2019. However, I am sure most folks watched TV News regarding the Viking SKY ship being stranded off the Coast of Norway, on Saturday, March 23rd with people being taken off the
ship by Helicopter. Within a few hours we got notified by Viking that our upcoming trip on the SKY ship had been cancelled. Panicked, we contacted our Travel Agent, to see what to do, as we knew our "stop over" in Switzerland was mostly non-refundable! Swiss Air from Copenhagen to Zurich Airport, two night stay at the Raddison Blu in Luzerne, then Two nights say at the Steigenberger in Zurich. Our travel agent came up with a "last minute" plan to take a Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland. Thus we would be able to continue the Stop over in Switzerland!
However, that would put us in Switzerland ONE-DAY LATE! Meaning we would have to push out or stay by one day at each Hotel. The Raddison Blu in Luzerne, gave us NO problem with this, no extra charges. However, the Steigenberger was not as KIND! We had to keep our Original Reservation, then pay additionally for one extra night! (basically stay for two nights, pay for three). After all, we were NOT asking to Cancel, nor get any monies back, just move out the Reservation by ONE DAY! Thus our Feelings for this Trip began to change! We were only taking this whole trip to Celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Plus the cost for the extra one night, cost more then the two nights individually. In other words, our original cost was $504.16 USD for two nights, or $252.08 USD per night. The addition cost they required for the one extra night was $294.56 USD. This only furthered the INSULT! Our travel agent said she tried couple of times to get the reservation just moved out the one day, but they would not concur! We value Rules, but sometimes exceptions can be made!
When we checked in on April 9th, 2019, there was some confusion regarding how many nights stay, etc, since we basically had two Reservations..............but we got that straightened out! When the nice young man gave us our Key he said, "your room number has been changed". Instead of getting the City View, we PAID FOR, we got a room with an Office Building across the road from us, which caused us to keep our curtains closed most of the time! The room changed from 401 to 314, as noted on the Folder with the Keys! This tells me that Steigenberger re-rented the room we paid for, hence double dipping, which I believe in the US may be illegal. Never again!!!
