"Want to sleep in Boston ’s very first skyscraper? Originally constructed in 1893, the 15-story Ames Building was, for many years, the tallest building in the city. Renowned architect David Rockwell helped reconceive the building as the high-end Ames Hotel in 2009, preserving much of the original detailing. Many celebrities have since stayed in the luxury hotel, that's now part of the Hilton Curio Collection, a collection of unique hotels steeped in history. The rooms at the Ames feel more like opulent city apartments, with modernist furniture and eclectic details like feather chandeliers and gold-sequined pillows. The property’s historic roots are reflected in the 13-foot ceilings and Romanesque, floor-to-ceiling arched windows. Other classic elements include decorative marble fireplaces and oak wood floors. Centrally located in downtown Boston, the Ames provides easy foot access to many of the city’s best-known attractions."

"Back up: Tell us a little about the hotel. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes the Ames Building, built in 1889, as Boston's first skyscraper and one of its finest examples of Romanesque architecture. Today it's occupied by the Ames Hotel Boston, and although the building's historic exterior remains intact, the interior is an homage to contemporary design, with lots of white and neutrals accented with colorful art. Sounds lovely. What’s the crowd like? The hotel's unbeatable location near Faneuil Hall and the Freedom Trail makes it popular with tourists. And its high-design quotient and critically acclaimed restaurant Cultivar promise a steady stream of in-the-know locals. I'm all for attention to a good restaurant. Now, onto the good stuff: Tell us about the digs. The David Rockwell–designed interiors are clean and serene, with white walls, high ceilings, and the occasional accent piece. How about the little things, like the mini bar, or the toiletries? Anything you'd like to call out? There's no shortage of amenities: large flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, complimentary Wi-Fi, blackout curtains, and fluffy bathrobes. So, we're set. How about the food? You mentioned it was solid—what can we expect?Cultivar's seasonal, delectable cuisine is so hard to resist that the limited room service hours (5 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly) are a bit of a bummer. No matter; the spaghetti alla chitarra ($26), which comes with fava beans, ramps, sugar snap peas, dollops of mascarpone, and a piment d'espelette crumble, is simply scrumptious. How about the staff? Was the overall service good? The concierge here is a jack of all trades, from setting up restaurant reservations and in-room spa services, to helping you view worthy sights few other tourists know about. Perfect. Anything else we should know about? There's a small, well-equipped gym; a valet (for $53 a day); and in-room spa services. Got it. Can you sum up this place in a few words?A gorgeous boutique hotel with a location that's bar none." - Todd Plummer

This was a spectacular hotel. Beautiful rooms. Charming, accommodating staff. My wife and I stayed here on our wedding night, and they really made our night magical. What an unmitigated shame that it’s no longer operating. I hope the current student occupants appreciate what a special place they have the opportunity to live in.

Perfect location. The hotel is a historical site building. It is near the public market, Boston common, freedom trail, and the aquarium. The room was not exactly what we saw on the picture when we booked the hotel. It was smaller than I expected and the setting was different. But the room is clean and modern. They do have bigger and nicer rooms in the building. We paid fairly amount of price per night. I guess the receptionist did not give us a better room? There is no fridge or microwave in the room.

The hotel was very aesthetically pleasing. The room was beautiful and neat. The reason for only 3 stars was the staff and the price. The price was high for a small room and without much at all included. (Almost $500 for one night) The staff was nice but at the same time, didn't seem very happy to see "younger" people checking into the hotel. Also getting a knock on our door by a staff member asking if we were checking out late since we hadn't left yet. Checkout was at noon and it was only 10. The only reason for the 3rd star was the shower. It was amazing. But next time when i am planning a trip to Boston, I'm gonna take my money elsewhere.

Great hotel if you're ready to splurge a little. Reception staff was the best, always very welcoming, polite, genuinely concerned with our well-being and really friendly. The room was amazing, the view was great, really clean, bed extremely comfortable although it felt like some things hadn't been installed yet (missing a light fixture on top of the desk, the weird flat fake fireplace, etc.). Checking out was a breeze, valet parking was great too. Location is central and you can easily walk pretty much everywhere, it's also close to bus and metro stations. I highly recommend it!

Great staff, fabulous room. Diane was our hostess during our three day long conference and she was very attentive to our needs. The elevators are a little small if you're claustrophobic. Breakfast was OK but I think they should mix it up a little.

Staff could NOT have been more helpful, friendly, and considerate during our stay. They were understanding of all the issues that come along with a family w/ young kid in a big city. One night upon return from a long day of touring, the front staff even handed me an ice cold Diet Coke like I was on a Coke commercial!! They were quick and friendly with requests for extra bedding, umbrellas, and baggage storage. Highly, HIGHLY recommend! Clean beautiful rooms, and close to everything!

It is a nice, "upscale" hotel. I do not feel the price was worth the amenities and comfort. The bed was so, so. The room temperature could not be regulated to my liking.. Always seemed too hot, even though it was low temps outside. The bathroom was strange, the shower leaked onto the bathroom floor. It was designed to actually work this way. Strange, especially with no drain in the bathroom. I will likely look for other accommodations if I return.

Beautiful hotel, a modern remake of this historical building. High end fixtures and finishes including a towel warmer in the bathroom. Nice breakfast selection and friendly front desk staff. Hotel is perfectly located close to everything. Would stay again for sure!
