This New Platform Is Changing Accessible Travel by Verifying Luxury Hotels

"This Maldivian resort is the first property to earn Verified by IncluCare five-star status, an accreditation awarded only to hotels that have demonstrated guest-inclusivity excellence for at least 24 months (or by discretionary exception for exemplary accessibility). Imagery and reporting highlight accessible leisure features—such as poolside access for guests using wheelchairs—and the property completed Inclu’s multi-step evaluation process including an Inclusive Hospitality Appraisal, staff training webinar, and an action-and-adjustment plan to improve accessibility and inclusivity across facilities and services." - Katie Nadworny Katie Nadworny Katie Nadworny is an Istanbul-based writer who specializes in stories at the intersection of culture and politics in Turkey, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. "Set the scene for us: Where is this place, and what's the vibe? With amazing Beverly Hills-like villas, this is a deeply ambitious hotel full of big-hitters. Then you land and you can’t quite believe the water is that clear, or the sand is that white, and apart from the smart wooden overwater villas curling around to the left of the jetty, it seems like there are hardly any structures here at all. The ones that are here are all-white, clean-lined, and minimalist—the opposite of the palm-roofed tropical cliché. That sounds divine. Is there a story behind it all? It’s part of the Small Maldives Islands Company, which means it’s the opposite of a big global brand. Cara Delevingne has spent New Year's here. Got it! What can we expect from our room?My overwater villa opened right onto the lagoon (as blue as a blue curaçao-laced cocktail), where manta rays swim right past in the shallows. There’s an infinity pool for prime sunset views, and the color scheme reflects the watery setting with navy-blue striped cushions, turquoise mosaic tiles in the huge bathrooms, and sailor’s rope repurposed as a light shade. That description alone is relaxing. How about the food and drink? There’s a clever mix of restaurants, so you can be as low-key or as dressed-up as you like: wood-fired pizza for poolside lunches; Asian-spiced Wok for dim sum and noodles; fish and chips. The standout is Koi, the candelit Japanese restaurant at the end of the jetty where you should request a table right by the water. The sushi and sashimi are delicious. Afterwards, head upstairs for cocktails at the Oak Lounge. The island is all-inclusive. Perfect—we love options. Anything to say about the service? The yoga teacher Kelzang Dorji from Bhutan, dressed all in white, has the gentlest spirit—but he makes you work. There’s a dive center at the end of the island’s jetty, and your personal butler will whizz over snorkeling gear that’s yours for the length of your stay. What about the other guests? What sort of person comes here?Expat British families with teenagers who can’t get enough of all the water sports, young Parisian couples wearing French linen everything, and body-beautiful Australians whose base is Byron Bay. Alright. And if you zoom out a bit more, what are the environs like?Amilla’s setting in the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, means you are just a five-minute boat trip away from the so-called Blue Hole, one of the best dive sites in the Maldives—look out for turtles, triggerfish, and guitar sharks. Excellent. Anything we missed? As well as waterfront villas, Amilla also has treehouses up in the jungle canopy. One is dedicated to personal training with the cult London-based trainers Bodyism, so you can spend a day up in the cool, green treetops having a one-on-one workout session and a nutrition-packed, gluten-free, sugar-free lunch from the Bodyism café. Also the overwater yoga pavilion on the other side of the island is a beautifully peaceful spot to practice at dawn. Anything you’d change?Add more local Maldivian food options—the restaurants tend to focus on the crowd-pleasers of Italian, Japanese, and Southeast Asian. So is a stay here worth it—and why?Amilla is worth coming to for its spectacular tropical setting. The unhurried sense of calm—such a foil to warp-speed life in the big city." - Grainne McBride

We have been to the Maldives countless times. Amilla stands out way ahead of the everyone. Service was grade A, Nappe our room Butler was an absolute gem. The lifeguards would follow us as we were snorkeling all around the island tirelessly all throughout- a 1st time in a resort. The food was great too. The two chaps at the EBC took care of our kids so well I cant put to words. Yasin, Shehbaz, Yeli, Shahid and everyone were awesome. The dive center guys were wonderful too! Mike and his team were very professional. The Manta experience was memorable, the snorkeling and marine life was perfect, you get to see all the fish, reef sharks, nurse sharks and turtles. Unfortunately didn't go fishing due to bad weather. We were a group of 10 and were taken care off all the time to the minutest detail. Definitely recommend this resort over all others.

Amilla was an incredible resort for our family. The staff, the location and the whole experience was unforgettable. |We were a bit unlucky with the weather as Oct is indeed a tricky month and we did get quite a bit of tropical train and wind, however we still were able to do a lot including snorkelling, diving, fishing trips, dolphin watching trips. The children absolutely loved the kids club, which is filled with great staff with kids, full of different activities for them every day. |Amilla is a very family friendly resort, but I suppose also good for couples. It just ticks all the boxes. The staff has been amazing and super accommodating from our bottler Nappe who welcomed us and assisted us on every single request we had (thank you Nappe !!) to the waiters and waitresses and chefs who were just so good to us. The food experience at Amilla is also worth mentioning as it has a large variety. The food is so good there ! From their Japanese/ fusion food, to their Maldovian / Indonesian but also Mexican/ Greek and Italian food. We didn’t want to go buffet style and Amilla was the perfect fit for us. I am celiac and this was never an issue at Amilla, from the chefs to the waiters/ waitresses, they all made sure I had the same experience as the others and allowed me to eat the same food just done gluten free: what a privilege ! The variety of fish and turtles and even reef sharks that you find snorkelling just outside of your accommodation at Amilla is mind blowing. I don’t even think it’s necessary to go diving when you have so much right there.|Thank you Amilla !! We cannot wait to come back to visit you!!

My wife and I spent a week at Amilla and loved it. The Staff is very attentive and we noticed that they were great with the kids who were there with their families. The different restaurants were all delicious and it was nice being able to try different cuisines every night. If you like to snorkel the house reef is great, we saw sharks, dolphins, a turtle and many different species of fish. We also went on the trip to see the Mantas and I got some great videos of them with my GoPro. Our lagoon water pool Villa had great views of the ocean and the surrounding islands. Ahmed Ali was our Butler and he made sure that we always knew what options were available to us each day

Amilla was amazing - the best holiday we've ever had. It was incredibly family friendly and relaxing with fabulous food. The villa was stunning and the island had everything we needed - access to a great gym, a wonderful kids club and a perfectly warm and safe environment. Best of all though, were the staff - they had a great mix of being attentive but also leaving us to our own devices when we were relaxing. Nappe was a wonderful butler and Rahat made our villa feel like a little palace but everyone who helped us were amazing. The attention to detail (such as in the below photo) were second to none. Thank you Team Amilla!

We stayed at the resort for a week with my siblings and honestly, it felt like paradise from the moment we arrived. The resort is about a 30-minute seaplane ride away, and before the flight we got to wait in their lounge at the airport, which was a really nice touch. The island itself is big and very natural, so you always feel surrounded by untouched nature. The beaches are stunning with white sand, and the house reef is in amazing condition and full of life: we saw all kinds of colorful fish, manta rays, eagle rays, baby sharks, and so much more. We also went on a snorkeling excursion where we swam with countless turtles, and another trip to the Blue Hotel area, which was full of marine life. On the island, there were also plenty of activities available every day, so we never got bored. Food was another highlight. There are several restaurants to choose from, each with a different type of cuisine, so every meal felt like a new experience. Breakfast was excellent too, with plenty of fresh and tasty options to start the day. The staff were truly outstanding. A special thank you to our butler, Nape, who took care of us throughout our stay and made sure everything was perfect. The rest of the team was also very kind, helpful, and always available with a smile. We spent a few days in one of the Treetop Villas, something truly unique in the Maldives, and it was an amazing experience as we felt completely immersed in nature. For one night, we stayed in an overwater villa, and the feeling of sleeping right above the ocean was simply unforgettable. All in all, I couldn’t recommend this resort enough, and we’re already hoping we can come back again soon!
