This New Platform Is Changing Accessible Travel by Verifying Luxury Hotels

"This Maldivian resort is the first property to earn Verified by IncluCare five-star status, an accreditation awarded only to hotels that have demonstrated guest-inclusivity excellence for at least 24 months (or by discretionary exception for exemplary accessibility). Imagery and reporting highlight accessible leisure features—such as poolside access for guests using wheelchairs—and the property completed Inclu’s multi-step evaluation process including an Inclusive Hospitality Appraisal, staff training webinar, and an action-and-adjustment plan to improve accessibility and inclusivity across facilities and services." - Katie Nadworny Katie Nadworny Katie Nadworny is an Istanbul-based writer who specializes in stories at the intersection of culture and politics in Turkey, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. Amilla Fushi

"Set the scene for us: Where is this place, and what's the vibe? With amazing Beverly Hills-like villas, this is a deeply ambitious hotel full of big-hitters. Then you land and you can’t quite believe the water is that clear, or the sand is that white, and apart from the smart wooden overwater villas curling around to the left of the jetty, it seems like there are hardly any structures here at all. The ones that are here are all-white, clean-lined, and minimalist—the opposite of the palm-roofed tropical cliché. That sounds divine. Is there a story behind it all? It’s part of the Small Maldives Islands Company, which means it’s the opposite of a big global brand. Cara Delevingne has spent New Year's here. Got it! What can we expect from our room?My overwater villa opened right onto the lagoon (as blue as a blue curaçao-laced cocktail), where manta rays swim right past in the shallows. There’s an infinity pool for prime sunset views, and the color scheme reflects the watery setting with navy-blue striped cushions, turquoise mosaic tiles in the huge bathrooms, and sailor’s rope repurposed as a light shade. That description alone is relaxing. How about the food and drink? There’s a clever mix of restaurants, so you can be as low-key or as dressed-up as you like: wood-fired pizza for poolside lunches; Asian-spiced Wok for dim sum and noodles; fish and chips. The standout is Koi, the candelit Japanese restaurant at the end of the jetty where you should request a table right by the water. The sushi and sashimi are delicious. Afterwards, head upstairs for cocktails at the Oak Lounge. The island is all-inclusive. Perfect—we love options. Anything to say about the service? The yoga teacher Kelzang Dorji from Bhutan, dressed all in white, has the gentlest spirit—but he makes you work. There’s a dive center at the end of the island’s jetty, and your personal butler will whizz over snorkeling gear that’s yours for the length of your stay. What about the other guests? What sort of person comes here?Expat British families with teenagers who can’t get enough of all the water sports, young Parisian couples wearing French linen everything, and body-beautiful Australians whose base is Byron Bay. Alright. And if you zoom out a bit more, what are the environs like?Amilla’s setting in the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, means you are just a five-minute boat trip away from the so-called Blue Hole, one of the best dive sites in the Maldives—look out for turtles, triggerfish, and guitar sharks. Excellent. Anything we missed? As well as waterfront villas, Amilla also has treehouses up in the jungle canopy. One is dedicated to personal training with the cult London-based trainers Bodyism, so you can spend a day up in the cool, green treetops having a one-on-one workout session and a nutrition-packed, gluten-free, sugar-free lunch from the Bodyism café. Also the overwater yoga pavilion on the other side of the island is a beautifully peaceful spot to practice at dawn. Anything you’d change?Add more local Maldivian food options—the restaurants tend to focus on the crowd-pleasers of Italian, Japanese, and Southeast Asian. So is a stay here worth it—and why?Amilla is worth coming to for its spectacular tropical setting. The unhurried sense of calm—such a foil to warp-speed life in the big city." - Grainne McBride

Great time overall! We enjoyed the natural beauty of the island with its lush vegetation as we walked and bicycled the paths throughout the island. We saw many fish while snorkeling from our Reef Water Villa with Pool. The food was great, the pool setting overlooking the water was magical. The tailor made massage in the Spa was fabulous - many thanks to Sugee and Din! Everyone on the staff was friendly, attentive and really added to our experience . The management at Amilla personally chatted with us whenever and wherever we saw them around the island. Chef Chandra made us beautiful fruit plates at breakfast and personally prepared and served us a special dinner at Feeling Koi. We thank our butler Sam, Ratna in the Spa and yoga, all of our servers at every meal and all of the staff who maintain the property so beautifully! Definitely take the Back of the House tour to learn about how Amilla operates behind the scenes. Most especially we thank our fantastic housekeeper Yousuf! He kept our Villa 123 absolutely spotless, refreshing things and cleaning when we left the room and always greeting us with a smile. AND what a treat to see his artistic creations on our bed when we returned to Villa 123 each evening ! He is very talented and professional and thorough in all he did for us! No photos of those creations...it would ruin the surprise. You'll have to see for yourself! Thanks Yousuf!

I want to start off by saying that the hospitality here is the absolute best I’ve ever experienced! From the moment I landed at the Male airport I was greeted by the staff from Amilla and was taken to their private lounge while I waited for the seaplane. Once it was time to go on the seaplane I was escorted to the seaplane and once I arrived to the dock, I was greeted by the Amilla staff on a speed boat where we went to the actual resort. There I was greeted again by the manager and my personal butler Sam who was exceptional at scheduling all my activities and reservations. I also want to give a special shout out and thanks to Morgan who’s the resort manager for organizing the cocktail party where I got to meet more of the incredible staff like Kristina and Vipin. Also to Yamin for being so helpful and friendly during our water excursions. Now for the resort itself…. It is an absolute gorgeous island full of lush greenery and crystal clear beaches all around! I had an over the water sunset villa and wow it was huge and had the best views of the sunset. The food was also very delicious and had a great variety to choose from. Overall I give this resort a 10 out of 10 as the staff there go above and beyond to make sure your experience is memorable. I’m already looking forward to going back.

Absolutely loved our stay at Amilla! Our Kat was amazing—so attentive and made everything seamless. The Reef Pool Villa was super comfy with that dreamy turquoise lagoon right outside. Food? Delicious! Every meal felt fresh and flavorful, especially the floating breakfast. Perfect mix of luxury and chill vibes. Highly recommend!

We had a truly wonderful and memorable stay at Amilla Maldives Resort. The resort is exceptionally well organized, and everything runs smoothly thanks to the highly professional and attentive staff. From the very beginning, we felt genuinely cared for, and every detail of our stay was handled with great professionalism and kindness. A very special thank you to our Katheeb(a), Monica, who was incredibly kind, thoughtful, and always ready to assist us with a smile. We would also like to sincerely thank Yousuf, who was always there to help whenever we needed anything. In addition, Dewi, Shahbaj, and Mode treated us exceptionally well and made us feel truly welcome throughout our stay. The wine tasting experience with Simba was absolutely amazing. Simba took great care in selecting the best available wines and pairing them perfectly with our food, which elevated our dining experience to another level. The food at the resort was excellent. Feeling Koi, the Japanese restaurant, was outstanding, and we also greatly enjoyed both the Italian and Indian restaurants, which offered high-quality dishes and wonderful flavors. The only area where we feel there is room for improvement is the Greek restaurant, Tessera. While the concept is nice, it is missing some essentials of Greek cuisine. In particular, the spirits menu lacks Ouzo, which we believe is a must-have for any authentic Greek restaurant. Overall, our experience at Amilla Maldives was exceptional. It was a beautiful, relaxing, and truly memorable vacation, and we are very grateful to the entire team for taking such great care of us. Thank you for everything—we hope to return again in the future.

I think my choice of Amilla as my honeymoon stay is very brilliant.|Felt warm welcome since day 1 at the airport, experienced hospitality during my whole stay. |Nice island, beautiful sea, lovely jungle, good food, convenient bicycle, big villa, life on this island was so chill that I will remember for a long time.|Even I did not live in the reef villa that I preferred , I felt the whole island experience enjoyable.|One suggestion is to put small size adult life jacket in reef villa.|Wish I could come back sometime.

I stayed at Amilla Maldives and had an excellent experience from start to finish. The welcome was warm and genuine, and I immediately felt comfortable and well taken care of. The staff is consistently kind, attentive and professional, creating an atmosphere that makes you feel at home even so far away. The resort is extremely well maintained: quiet, clean and thoughtfully designed in every detail. I really appreciated the peaceful environment and the overall quality of the services offered. A special mention goes to Baddy, our butler, who supported us throughout the stay with kindness and professionalism. His attention made our trip even more enjoyable. Overall, my experience at Amilla was truly memorable, and it is definitely a place I will return to.

My stay at Amilla was absolutely perfect, and our whole family felt thoroughly relaxed and happy throughout the holiday.||The overall atmosphere of the resort is ideal for a getaway—peaceful, elegant, and soothing from the moment we arrived. |-Our villa was exceptionally spacious and comfortably accommodated our family. A delightful surprise was the direct access to the sea for snorkeling right from our room. The waters are teeming with vibrant fish and beautiful coral, and my 13 years old son couldn't get enough of exploring it every day.||-The dining experience was also outstanding, with a wide variety of high-quality options that catered to all our different tastes. A special mention goes to TESSERA—both the food and the ambiance are truly worth experiencing.||-What stood out equally was the service. Every staff member was friendly and professional. We are especially grateful to our butler, Yaan, who took care of our daily activities, reminded us of our schedule, and went above and beyond to assist us with whatever we needed. Thanks to him, our trip felt seamless and truly memorable.||-We were so pleased with our experience that we will definitely choose Amilla again in the future. If possible, we would love to have Yaan as our butler once more.||Thank you again to the entire team for such wonderful memories.

Truly an outstanding resort and place to vacation! Stayed 3 nights using Hilton Aspire Free Night Certificates as a Hilton Diamond Member, was treated like royalty. PRO: - Outstanding ground operations at MLE. Very friendly staff, can wait in beautiful Amilla lounge, good and efficient bus shuttles. - Extremely beautiful and intimate resort. Very well maintained. - Basic room was an Overwater Villa, upgraded to Lagoon Overwater Villa upon arrival. Huge room, beautiful outdoor deck with pool, only visible by the occasionally arriving water plane. - Outstanding 5* service from everybody on this resort. Somehow even staff you never interacted with knew your name. Assigned butler Bella was always proactively engaging and responsive via Whatsapp. Very good organization regarding arrival and departure. - Great food selection and quality. Breakfast with an impressive selection and a la carte menu. Prices at dinner restaurants were mostly more affordable than I expected. Highly recommend the Sushi restaurant. - Pretty good offering in gym (separate houses or cardio + lifting) and spa selection. Sauna only goes to 80°C unfortunately. - Very nice reef directly accessible from the Overwater Villas, can rent snorkel equipment for free and just dive in. CON: - Expensive when booked with cash, but probably fair compared to other resorts in the Maldives. You will probably spend less on food here than elsewhere. - Water plane appears more expensive than elsewhere, expect $2200 for transfer for 2. Return flight was bumpy. Air flow in these planes is minimal. You will probably suffer if you get nauseous easily. - Lots of families with kids in case you're trying to avoid that. But doesn't really affect you as extensive kids' playground and program available.
