The Ultimate Guide to the World's Food Museums

"It’s no secret that the Dutch are very fond of cheese. The Netherlands boasts many varieties named for the regions where they’re produced. But when it comes to the country’s most famous cheese, Gouda, there is no geographical limitation to where it can be made. This might raise the question of what makes a Gouda a Gouda. The Amsterdam cheese museum is here answer that, as well as other FAQs about Dutch dairy. The top floor of the museum is a specialty cheese shop with most well-known Dutch brands and many smaller, more specialized varieties, including Twentse bunker cheese, truffle cheese, and even cheese with saffron. Most of the cheese is available on sample platters, and the staff will happily tell you about its origin. In the basement, there is a small museum that shows the process of making Gouda cheese, from the cow all the way to the market. You’ll also find examples of old instruments such as cheese-curd cutters, a milk machine, and even a specialized cheese scale. The museum once housed what it claimed was the most expensive cheese slicer in the world. The silver slicer was encrusted with 200 diamonds and worth about 25,000 Euros (about $28,000). Unfortunately, thieves stole it in 2015 and, despite the promised reward of the world’s largest fondue set, it’s never been recovered." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"Just down the street from the Anne Frank House is the Amsterdam Cheese Museum. It feels more like a shop, shelves filled to the ceiling with a huge variety of Dutch cheeses, including the world-famous gouda and edam varieties. If you are strolling along the lovely Prinsengracht canal, this is a nice place to taste some samples and buy some packable souvenirs for home. And on the blocks alongside the museum are plenty of open-air, canal-side cafes."

Google
The shop provided a short journey for you to understand the history and making of cheese. There is no admission fee. There are a lot free sample tasting for different types of cheese that they are carrying. We bought the Strawberry Champagne cheese which is so amazing with its favour and is very appealing. It is worth it to pay a visit.

Google
The cheese flavors variety is insane! My favourites were the Truffle chorizo, Pesto, and Cumin. The staff was extremely friendly and even offered us a free sample of the pear jam. Excellent service!

Shann Sheddricke

Google
The Amsterdam Cheese Museum is a cozy spot where I got to taste so many different types of Dutch cheese, all for free! The experience encouraged me to try everything, from creamy young gouda to bold, aged varieties, and even some unique flavors like truffle, plus their dips and my most favorite was the smoked goat. It felt more like a delicious cheese adventure than just a museum visit.

Google
Such a fun place!! Amazing that you can try so many types of cheese for free, and they're sold at good prices. The museum part downstairs is very small/a bit token, but the most important part (the cheese) is on point :)

Kate Ceraso

Google
Awesome place. Great samples, you can try all of the cheese before you buy any. The prices weren’t bad. Everything is packaged and ready to transport. The garlic cheese was my favorite. They have a cute little museum in the basement level of the shop. They also have other accessories needed for your cheese needs. It is free to enter

Izabelaa

Google
Amazing little place, you can find out few things on history of making cheese and try something many different cheese types! Loved it, stayed there for around 15 minutes.

David Binder

Google
Great shop to buy cheese, good prices and you can try them all with samples. The museum is a nice touch but it’s more of an homage to dairy farming rather than a full fledged museum. It’s a 5 min walkthrough at best. Overall worth the visit to the shop though.

Google
A small and lovely store offering a huge variety of good cheeses to choose from. Visit the museum below the store to get a glimpse of how the cheeses were produced.

Yelp
It was so fun!! Incredible cheeses to sample all around :) came from USA to see Amsterdam and this was on the list, and it didn't disappoint!! Vibe was immaculate!

Yelp
Free samples, lots of variety of cheese, and a free museum - what is not to love! We stopped by twice during our time in Amsterdam, the first to kill time before a dinner reservation which is when we explored the cheese museum in the basement, that is small but informative (and free) and we tried some samples and notes our favorites. We stopped by on a later date to purchase our favorite cheese, and make sure we didn't miss any great samples the first time. The prices are a little high, but the quality and variety of cheese is great! I love that most of the cheeses are travel friendly, which is a huge plus! However, unlike most places I visited in Amsterdam I will say the customer service was not as noticeable. The only interaction I had was when making a purchase, and it was mostly just telling me my total. So if you are wanting more of an experience where you can ask questions or get recommendations this might not be your top spot, but if you want to solo explore some free samples and choose your favorites than you'll love it!

Tav L.

Yelp
Very kind staff, amazing cheese, and great vibe! I will be coming back! I bought 3 and it was hard not to get more!
google avatar

Helen H.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the museum located downstairs was flooded. We walked around the cheese shop, which had a large variety. There are samples available. We didn't buy anything though, because the cheese slices were cut quite big. I wished there were smaller packages. There is a cute display of a wheel of cheese and a cow outside the store.
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
Loved my experience here! So many perfectly wrapped and gift ready cheeses! The girl was friendly and encouraged guests to try the yummy cheese
google avatar

Lily H.

Yelp
What a great experience and activity. If you like cheese, this is the spot for you. There is a small history of cheese making in the basement (free to visit) but the best part is sampling all the cheese on the main level! There is no shortage - probably sampled over 12 cheeses and still didn't get to all the options. Staff is constantly replenishing and helpful for questions. We found a new favorite! Cheeses are vacuum sealed and ready to fly. One downside is, some people go from bowl to bowl with their one toothpick rather than a new toothpick every cheese bowl. There should be signage for hygiene purposes.
google avatar

Yelp
The cheese tastings were nice. The museum was cute and free but very very small and we didn't learn much. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way to come here but fun if you are nearby!
google avatar

Suzee Q.

Yelp
OMG! After the Tulip Museum we stumbled upon this! The "museum" bit is down stairs but the real action is in the retail area. There was one very enthusiastic worker dude who was generous with the samples and recommendations. And boy, people were buying cheese hand over fist! In addition to cheese, there are crackers and fantastic mustards, too. Delish!!!
google avatar

Pav T.

Yelp
Really interesting but very small. Basically a gray place to drop by and try some cheese. Very cool that it is free.

Mike C.

Yelp
Customer service was great! We were in Amsterdam to catch a cruise, after taste testing several pieces, we limited ourselves to 3 different cheeses. Wish we would have purchased more!
google avatar

Kristy S.

Yelp
This place is off the charts! If you love cheese, be sure to pop in to this museum and shop. We were there on October 26 and only had 20 minutes to browse before they closed (many shops close at 6:00pm, this one at 7:00pm). The young gentlemen working in the shop were very knowledgeable, friendly and happy to help (perhaps the Avenue Hotel should send their office staff over for some lessons in customer service!). There are samples of everything they sell, cheeses, crackers, stroopwafles...). Don't miss the truffle cheese - TDF! We took home 3 cheeses and 2 bags of cheese crackers). The cheeses do not need to be refrigerated until after opening. This makes it very easy to take home in your suitcase. They also ship worldwide. Be sure to stop in to this little gem - you won't regret it!
google avatar

Corey C.

Yelp
Let the ridiculousness commence: we proclaim this place to be GOOD-A. Get it? Gouda/Good-a? Somebody get them off stage! Anyhow, jokes aside, this place rocks our cheese loving souls. Samples and kind service, even for noisy Americans looking for "souvenir" cheese wheels that will actually be scarfed later that night in the hotel room. Five stars for aged whey in all it's glory here.
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
A very small and friendly place. Be sure to go downstairs and learn something. They also have a cute set up to take a photo. You can email it to yourself. The staff upstairs is friendly and happy to chat. The place can be a bit of zoo and crowded but if you show true interest they are happy to talk to you. You can taste cheese upstairs. It was a fun short stop close the Anne Frank house.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
I found out about the Amsterdam Cheese Museum before visiting Amsterdam, and it was on my to visit list. We ended up going here... twice! Both times, the staff was OUTSTANDING!!! (I wish I could remember the names of the people who we spoke with.) When you walk in, you're in a cheese shop, and you can sample all of the cheese there... it was so fun to try so many things!!! There is also the museum itself downstairs. It's small and quick, but it's definitely a fun little addition. Prices were fair, and the cheeses were delish. (That gouda....... MMMMMMM!!!) They also have some cheesewares (lol) and other little snacks, like stroopwafels. If you're in Amsterdam and like cheese, this is definitely worth a visit!!
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I went here pre-pandemic. Very gouda. I was not a cheese fan at first but when I came out I was a cheese convert. We got to sample a lot of different cheeses and fortunately for us, did not get sick. The staff were very friendly, and we had a pleasant and informative conversation with them. Downstairs is the actual museum, where we got to learn more about the history of Dutch cheese. My friends ended up purchasing some cheeses to take home.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
They have a great variety of different cheeses here. I have to say though I was a little taken aback by the many people I saw using the same toothpick to try all of the different cheeses from the sample dish. I recommend not trying the samples unless you're confident with your immune system. We just bought some to bring home with us.
google avatar

Yelp
The Amsterdam Cheese Museum is a great place to try some cheese, buy some cheese, and learn about the history of Dutch cheese. The ground floor is where they sell all the cheese. There are samples around the whole store. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and will tell you anything you need to know. Downstairs is where the cheese museum is at. It's very small and it just gives you some brief facts. There's a photo op downstairs, where you can dress up in traditional Dutch clothing and pretend you work on a cheese farm (is that even the correct terminology? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) Best of all, it's free! In a city where you have to pay to get into every attraction, this is one where you won't have to. You can spend your money on better things, like CHEESE!
google avatar

Mai N.

Yelp
Cheese, cheese, and more cheese! Must try Gouda when in the Netherlands. The Special One and the Truffle Goudas are my favorite. Yes, you can take them back to the States.
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
This is NOT a museum. It IS a cheese store that offers lots of samples and sells many different cheese varities. Contrary to what some reviewers have stated, the prices here are NOT low; on the contrary, the prices here are some of the highest I've seen in Holland. More on that later. The shop is charming enough. The personnel are friendly and encourage visitors to sample as much as they want. We tried 10 or so different cheeses and did decide to buy (yes, overpriced) a piece of pesto cheese (that just is not available elsewhere) that was quite tasty. Do not buy the normal Goudas, belegens, goat or Old Amsterdam cheeses here. Ever. Buy these types at the street markets held all over town every day except Sundays. Without a doubt buying at the street markets will result in minimum 25% savings. Yep, I did buy a lot of cheese from the street markets and paid a lot less than at the "museum".
google avatar

Kenneth P.

Yelp
Free samples of cheese everywhere! This was where I really began to appreciate the variety of cheese and realize how much of an appreciate the Dutch have for it. I walked around town with a block of Gouda cheese in my backpack all weekend after coming here, and nibbled on it periodically throughout my strolls (and bike rides of course). No shame. In addition to the cheese shop, there's a nice little museum downstairs with info on how it was created and why the dutch cheese is uniquely delicious. They also have figures with traditional Dutch clothing and clogs, and you can try on a cheese hat (reminiscent of what Packers fans wear). Important information right there.
google avatar

Yelp
The name of this place is a little misleading - it's not really a museum, but more of a cheese shop with a bottom floor "museum" telling you about how cheese is made, and a photo-booth where you can take some pictures with some props and email it to yourself. You don't have to pay to go downstairs to see the "museum" but it would take 5-10 min to go downstairs to read a bit about the history of cheese and how it's made. The upstairs has probably 30-40 different types of cheese to sample (the samples are cut into tiny pieces) - but there are different goudas aged differently, gouda cheese flavored differently, and some other cheeses with sheep's milk, a truffle cheese, beer cheese, and smoked cheeses. Everything is packed and ready to fly, and you can bring these in your checked or carry-on luggage. It will stay okay for a week or so, so it can travel home with you - once you get home, put it in the fridge. Most the staff is really friendly and knowledgable, but there were cheeses in a refrigerated section that I wasn't sure needed to stay refrigerated (why was it refrigerated in the store) and if I could travel with it. I asked one guy who gave me a snarky, "Can't you read the sign? Everything is travel-friendly" response. I could have done without the snark - it was a valid question if it was refrigerated in the store. Overall, I did like sampling the cheeses here and bought a chili / spicy gouda cheese to take home, which I've been enjoying. Prices are pretty fair. Not worth trekking across town to come here (since you can try cheeses at most cheese shops in Amsterdam), but if you're in the area, it's worth a visit. Or if you're hungry and want to sample cheeses as a free snack, this is a good place to come. You'll probably end up buying something to take home!
google avatar

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
Walked by here and knew I had to pop in! They provide samples of almost all of the cheeses and have some surprising and unique varieties. We entered up buying a Truffle Farmhouse and a Goat Milk Gouda.
google avatar

Lindsay A.

Yelp
I stumbled across the Amsterdam Cheese Museum when looking for a cheese shop. The shop has a great selection of cheeses with samples for almost every item available to purchase. This helped trying the cheese before deciding on making a purchase. The employee was also helpful in knowing whether I could bring the cheese back into the United States. In the basement there is a museum, but that requires walking down a narrow set of stairs. I decided against heading into the museum only because I wasn't in the mood for the stairs. Overall a great little shop with helpful employees. I'm not sure how great the prices are compared to other shops, but this shop worked great for where I was located in Amsterdam at that moment.
google avatar

Nadia Z.

Yelp
OK, it's a cheese shop. But you have to applaud clever name and marketing appeal! ...And I don't even like cheese in general... However, aged, aromatic, semi-dry but melt-in-your-mouth cheese - that's whole 'nother ball game. I do like that. You can sample ALL cheeses in the shop. Do so till you find your perfect collection. They are not cheap, but heck, something this good rarely comes without price tag. There is a small museum set downstairs with their story and how cheeses are made - make sure to wander through and get inspired. Afterwords, go back for more samples and to finally make your choices. They all amazing. Yummmm Say what??? Cheeeeeese!
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
Not really a museum but a cheese store. I was a little disappointed because I went expecting an actual museum but it's just a tiny area with the "history of cheese" in Amsterdam. There were samples which were nice and the staff were very friendly. Just a heads up that it's just a cheese store.
google avatar

Dewan A.

Yelp
Nice spot to get some Dutch cheese. Excellent to taste test as well. For sure not a museum, but worth a visit for sure.
google avatar

Max M.

Yelp
Very friendly staff! My wife and I went here as we were waiting for our Anne Frank house tour, it's right across the canal, worth the 2 min walk. There's quite a bit of selection of different cheeses. There's a bowl with samples that you're free to taste as much or little as you want.
google avatar

Maria E.

Yelp
I don't know how else to say this....FREE CHEESE! AS MUCH AS YOU WANT! My sister and I walked in here and it was a bit like walking through the gates of heaven. Literally unlimited samples. It felt like a full meal by the time we were through. So many interesting, delicious varieties...and I'm sure you could find a few nice gifts if you're not just a free loader like my sister and I. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Amsterdam! Super centrally located too so it's not out of your way at all :)
google avatar

Jasmine X.

Yelp
The first thing that I think you should all know is that this is not a cheese museum. When my best friend told me to visit this place, I was initially turned off because I didn't want to pay a ticket price to learn about cheese. BUT, when I was wandering around and stumbled across this during my Jordaan journeys, I learned that this in fact is not really a museum in the normal sense. It's really just a cheese shop. BUT, what makes this cheese shop that much more awesome than the other ones is that if offers free (unlimited, hehe) samples of the cheese that they produce. In front of every cheese is a small plate with chopped pieces of cheese. Grab a toothpick and start sampling. They have a great variety--aged cheese, smoked cheese, pesto cheese, TRUFFLE CHEESE. Wow. The truffle cheese was some of the most amazing cheese that I've ever had (though I will admit, I'm not a cheese connoisseur, I'm probably just saying this because I like truffles). They also sell various little dips for their cheese which I thought was cool. I don't buy cheese... so I can't really tell you if the prices were expensive or not, but a giant slice of the truffle cheese was 14.50 euros. The dudes who work there are extremely friendly and quite knowledgable about their craft. tldr; I love this place. If you're in the area, absolutely worth stopping by! not a museum, just a cheese shop with lots of yummy free cheese!
google avatar

Kathleen W.

Yelp
It's cheesy! Go on in! You can get enough free samples to last you forever. The free samples are in the store on the first floor. Cheese is prepared, so you can take it on short-haul flights. The downstairs is the museum, but you can easily skip that.
google avatar

Brittany E.

Yelp
The museum downstairs was neat, but the crown and glory is the cheese shop. With samples available of every cheese, it was extremely difficult not to buy them all. The employees were knowledgeable on the cheeses and helpful with selection. Check this place out!
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
A haven for cheese lovers! The top floor of this "museum" is a cheese shop featuring all sorts of aged, flavored, and amazing cheese from Holland. With free samples galore and amazing customer service this became my favorite place to spend a morning in Amsterdam after visiting the Anne Frank House. Plus I was able to get some souvenir shopping done, win-win. Downstairs is a little museum that features how the cheese is made and a couple of props. Definitely worth a stop in if you find yourself in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
So fun! Get full on cheese, ask questions to the friendly cheese people, take cute pictures with cheese props, and learn some stuff, too! Make sure to actually like, buy some stuff, too. It's delicious, and come on, you just ate all that free cheese. Oh, and try the mustard!!
google avatar

Brittany V.

Yelp
I'm a cheese fanatic so this place was right up my alley. There wasn't much museum but there was a little history downstairs and photo opportunities. Upstairs though had so much cheese and so many different varieties with jams ! You could buy or not. No pressure. Staff is very friendly.
google avatar

Annie N.

Yelp
Amsterdam Cheese Museum is located in the heart of the tourist area. It is near the Anne Frank Museum, so walking to this shop was a little hectic trying to bypass all the tourist groups. Frankly, I didn't think Amsterdam Cheese Museum had more to offer than the many other cheese shops located throughout the city. There were samples, gifts and of course, cheese. You can probably find the same cheeses throughout the city. My boyfriend and I mainly came here because of the museum aspect of this shop, which is small and a little disappointing. I don't recommend going out of your way to check this shop out. However, it's definitely worth a peek if you're in the area (which you'll probably be given its central location).
google avatar

Kara S.

Yelp
So much fun!! My boyfriend and I loved the museum explaining how the cheese is processed. Upstairs, they offer probably 30 different samples of cheeses which were all amazing! The staff was also really helpful at picking out different cheeses for pairing with food. The museum has been one of my highlights in Amsterdam, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves cheese like I do!!
google avatar

Casey G.

Yelp
Cheese! Tons of delicious cheese! I could not leave like I was in heaven. All the free samples I can eat and everything was at a great price. The museum was free to the public they had a nice photo both going on. Definitely worth a stop and a visit.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
I love this place! Conveniently located in the Jordaan area right beside the Tulip museum. Although there are many different cheese places offering tastings and a small museum section, this one was my favorite. The museum part is located in the basement and requires a lot of imagination. You are shown with pictures and scenes that depict in detail the steps of the cheese making process. It is completely free to visit and I totally recommend it. Upstairs, where the store is is also an experience! The man working was so kind and helpful and the cheeses were absolutely delicious. A great place to purchase a souvenir or even a snack.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
It is what it is - a cute little cheese shop that added a little fun and history in their basement! (garden level) The cheese options are phenomenal, the cheese tools are numerous and the staff - super friendly, helpful and happy to have you there, weather you purchase or not! We enjoyed the information, had our photo taken and left happy! What more can you ask for!
google avatar

Kelly M. G.

Yelp
It is a cheese shop and it has a HUGE variety to choose from; they also have sandwiches and loaves of bread. All cheese is flight ready just try not to smash the semi-hard cheese.
google avatar

Miss J.

Yelp
It's basically a two story cheese shop. Downstairs area has things on the walls to read about the history of cheese making etc and a little photo op area. I appreciated the cheese samples given upstairs and all the options available but I think I expected a little more for a "museum".
google avatar

Deisi G.

Yelp
Small cheese shop that offers soooo many different cheeses to sample from!!! I love cheese so I loved it here. They have a little museum in their basement which is really cute. The workers are super nice and friendly, they let us take pictures with the cheeses, we were being tourist. My friends decided to buy some cheeses there and were scared they would go bad on our way back to the states but the people that work there told us they had nothing to worry about as long as we didn't open them. We didn't and the cheese made it back safely lol. Amsterdam has many cheese shops and we went to a couple however I felt this one was the best one.
google avatar

Reina T.

Yelp
This is the go-to place for cheese lovers!! Huge variety of different flavored Dutch cheese. Try the truffle cheese! Cute cutting boards that are also great souvenirs are available on offer.
google avatar

Daniela S.

Yelp
All types of cheese- delicious! Different flavors make this a great experience! The people are extremely knowledgeable for their product and very friendly.
google avatar

Jonathan W.

Yelp
The museum is an offshoot of a cheese shop. They stock great quality cheeses and offer plenty of samples. The museum has information about how cheese is made. If you truly love cheese it would be worth checking out. I wouldnt go out of my way to visit, but if I was in the area, I would stop inside. The owner and staff are very friendly and passionate about cheese.
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
This is a MUST SEE for any cheese lover. Samples galore. Very knowledgeable staff. Cute little museum downstairs.
google avatar

Gary Y.

Yelp
Liked all the free samples they have available for you to try out. Ended up buying a wedge of the truffle cheese (so good!) - but this is definitely not a museum. The downstairs room has a couple cheese graters with a plastic cow - and they'd like you to donate 1€ for seeing it. Wut?
google avatar

Rosquete B.

Yelp
These are really cheese shops with memorabilia in a different room Friendly hosts Great cheese samples
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
This cheese store is sooooo good! Very easy to stock up on favorites. They always have some sort of special cheese out. We always bring a bunch home to the US and it lasts for months. There are other places to get great cheese for less (like farmers markets) but this is so convenient!
