They say that they're the best value in Fairfield County -- and I'm betting that they're right. We stopped in Stamford to visit an old friend on the way up to New Hampshire. Knowing that we would be stopping overnight in that general area before we left Philadelphia, we checked out the hotel situation in the Stamford area. The Amsterdam was among the least expensive hotels or motels of the twenty or so around. The standard room with queen size bed and all the usual amenities was listed (rack rate!) at $80. That included a continental breakfast. The Holiday Inns, Marriotts, etc.. were running upwards of $160 without breakfast.
Naturally, we were suspicious. We arrived in the Stamford area on a Wednesday in the afternoon. Along the way up on I95, we picked up one of those hotel discount coupon booklets that can be found at every rest stop. There was a coupon for the Amsterdam offering the $80 room for $65 on a walk-in and if available basis. We decided to check this place out.
This is one of those few times when what looks like it's-too-good-to-be-true actually is true. There was no problem about honoring the coupon. And we were shown a couple of room to choose one to our liking. As in its description, both rooms (actually, the whole hotel) have recently undergone a total redecoration. We chose the room with the 32" flat screen TV over the one with a slightly smaller screen (with very wide selection of cable channels including the premium ones like HBO). The room was spacious, immaculate and had all the usual amenities found in Holiday Inn type motels/hotels.
The breakfast room is small and somewhat shabby, but clean (the only public space in the hotel not upgraded). The continental breakfast was very basic: orange juice, a couple of dry cereals, a bowl of apples, muffins, bread for toasting and croissants. The latter were perfectly acceptable, of the type that you'd find at Costco or BJ's.
I rated these accommodations with five stars because this really is "As good as it gets" -- for the money.
