Heard that Miyajima was famous for their anago (conger eel) and that Ueno was one of the top rated anago donburi restaurants in the area. Being a huge fan of unagi, I was really looking forward to trying anago.
My friends and I came to Miyajima early (9AM), so we decided to head to the Miyajima island first and hike up to Mt. Misen before returning back to the mainland at about 1:30PM. When we arrived at Ueno, we waited for a short time before the lady took our order. They only had takeout options at the time, we ordered two bento boxes to share for four people.
The anago was beautifully presented, lined perfectly on top of the rice. The anago was very fresh, but it was a lot less flavorful than unagi (probably because unagi comes with a lot of sauce) and the texture was more dry and chewy.
Overall, the anago bento was very unique and a good experience, but I felt it lacked a bit compared to good unagi meals I had in Japan. Nevertheless, I recommend giving Ueno a try!
