It's a nice fall weekend. My wife and I are in Manhattan and very hungry, so we decide to Yelp something in the area we're in. We came across Anand Indian Cuisine, and the reviews were favorable enough for us to give it a try.
When you get to the front, the place doesn't look appealing. It's kind of hidden away, and difficult to see into it from outside. After walking in, we were taken aback by how beautiful it is. Red brick walls, intimate lighting, and very spacious.
We were seated immediately (only 5 other people there that day) and given menus. Maybe 10 minutes after we sat our server took our food orders. Something I didn't like is that they brought out all the food at once. The light crunchy tortilla-like side with dipping sauces they gave us before the dishes came out didn't really help satiate our appetite. If you order the goat biriyani like we did, you'll wait at least 20 minutes to see any food on the table.
Thankfully, the food was amazing! The goat biriyani (they use a special technique to make it in the oven, so it takes a while) is super savory and delicious. I think it was the best one I've ever had. It has a lot of tiny bones inside, so be very careful when you chew. The Naan breads were good and not dissimilar from other Indian spots. The saag paneer was different in a good way from other spots I've had it at.
If they can rethink and improve on the order that they bring out the food, this place easily gets five stars.
