The World's Best Private Island Resorts

"On the faraway islands off southern Mozambique, it’s entirely possible to go off the grid. No place is this truer than at Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, a paradise blessed with a palm-laced coastline, cerulean waters, towering interior sand dunes, and untouched coral reefs. Forty-four luxury villas are sprinkled across this near-private island, which is a whopping 22-by-4 miles—that’s larger than all of Aruba—but still hosts a small village and a second property, both miles away. By day, amble along the beach (you won’t likely see another human for hours), then try your hand at dune boarding, and later retreat to your villa for a mind-blowing sunset of purples, pinks, and reds as traditional dhow boats disappear into the horizon. Or, swim among the dolphins, prolific in this protected tract of the Indian Ocean, and watch the humpback whales skirt past from July to September. Feast on local seafood along the beach—giant multi-pound crayfish are not uncommon here—or request to “Dine by Design,” enjoying dinner out on a sandbar with a personal waiter at the ready. A short flight + boat ride from Johannesburg in South Africa, this relaxing island stay is an easy (and well-deserved) addition to an action-packed African safari." - Paul Rubio

I recently stayed at this resort and unfortunately my experience was far below expectations. While the staff members—particularly the servers and general team—are genuinely kind and attentive, the property itself is in a noticeably deteriorated state and does not meet the standard of a 5-star hotel.||Facilities & Maintenance|The installations are old and poorly maintained. The pathways leading to the rooms have damaged wooden flooring, the curtains in the room were stained, and the bathroom was in visibly bad condition, including multiple spiders on the ceiling and corners. Additionally, the water in the bathroom came out brown; although management said it would be resolved, nothing changed during my stay.||Beach & Activities|The beach looks nothing like the promotional photos. There is almost no service available on the beach and very few guests around. The sailboat experience was also disappointing—the vessel felt extremely basic and precarious.||Management|While the staff is the best part of the resort, management is a different story. The manager provided explanations that simply didn’t make sense and did not adequately address the issues presented. He didn’t come near us again after the welcome.||Food, Laundry & Gym|The food is actually quite good, and the laundry service also works well. However, the gym feels neglected, with worn-out mats and outdated equipment.||Overall Impression|This property is not a 5-star resort. At best, it qualifies as a 3-star hotel—and barely. I would not return, and I strongly suggest potential guests think carefully before booking, especially considering the overwhelmingly positive reviews online, which I personally find surprising given my experience.||P.S.: If you don’t like boats, keep in mind that it’s a 50-minute ride to reach the island, and the boat hits the waves quite hard. You also have to step into the water above your knees to get on. I assume this is normal for islands, but I’m leaving the warning.”

Out stay was excellent! The property is beautiful and the staff incredibly friendly. We really loved exploring the different lounge areas and enjoying the view. All our meals were excellent, especially the local seafood.||The tours are highly recommended! We did the sand dunes tour and took in a beautiful sunset while sand boarding. And the snorkel day trip gave us a chance to se a different island and ended with a private bbq lunch on the beach. It felt very luxurious! Anantara offers a great blend of relaxation and adventure, all delivered with impeccable service. It was the perfect getaway!

My wife and I stayed here for five nights in July. From start to finish we found everything to be well organized, professional and personable. We opted for the boat ride to and from the island. The crew were all very helpful and ensured our transition from the boat to land was smooth. We had an ocean front room with a private pool. The view was stunning and the access to the beautiful beach was only a few steps away. There is plenty to do there and scheduling activities is easy. We mostly chilled at the spa, but we went snorkeling as well. Again, the boat crew were great as were the reefs and fish. The water was a little chilly for us and we should have taken the wet suit. Next time. The food was great and the service was impeccable. They go out of their way to individualize each experience. If we every make it back to Mozambique we will be sure to stay here again.

We had a truly fabulous stay at Anantara Bazaruto, where our group of 30 people spent five unforgettable nights. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel genuinely welcome by an exceptionally friendly and well-trained team who consistently went above and beyond.||The food was outstanding throughout our stay, with delicious meals and an abundance of fresh seafood that was beautifully prepared every day. While the hotel itself is a bit older, it is extremely well maintained, spotless, and full of charm. The rooms were very clean, with crisp, comfortable bed sheets that made for a wonderful night’s sleep.||The spa deserves a special mention – absolutely beautiful and offering one of the best massages we’ve ever experienced. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind.||A heartfelt thank you to Christian, the General Manager, who was always present, flexible, and incredibly accommodating. His hands-on approach and genuine care made a big difference and truly elevated our experience.||We couldn’t have asked for a better setting or service for our group stay and would highly recommend Anantara Bazaruto for an exceptional island escape.

Our visit to Anantara was nothing short of excitement, from the moment we landed at Vilankulos Airport we were already feeling the Mozambican hospitality as we were met by the representative who greeted us with a contagious smile as we took the transfer to the harbour where we took the boat across to the island. Upon arriving, we were greeted with a lovely local dance which made us feel special and very welcome, as this was not enough we were amazed by the arrival experience and the cool fresh villas which we checked in to. The Food was the main touch as we were pampered by what i was looking forward to the most, the sea food!!! This was the best sea food i have ever had in my life and i couldn't help but treat myself to this delicious and top of the range meal. The Hotel is geographically located perfectly and one would think why haven't i heard about this place before? seriously this place should be on top of the classics as i believe it goes toe to toe with other popular tourists destination in the mainstream. Overall our stay was amazing definitely i will be recommending this to my family and friends. The only sad thing i experienced was when we had to catch the boat to leave, it was such a sad moment having to leave this amazing place.

The resort claims to be a 5 star property but it’s run down and, while the staff are lovely, they are poorly trained. It’s not fully inclusive in that many drinks are for charge and most excursions are extra. This makes the expensive price point not worth it.||The management are not proactive on stocking the room fridge with desired beverages and does not inquire at check in as to what you’d enjoy. The water off the coast of Mozambique is gorgeous and snorkeling good but this spot needs a major overhaul to be 5 stars!

I have to admit, I am not a morning person, so having the lodge face West, meant that I could enjoy spectacular sun sets over the sea between the mainland and the lodge. I love that the beach units alternate one forward one back which enhances your privacy.||||Clearly the lodge is ideally positioned with the imposing sand dunes on the east coast and the immaculate white sandy beach which stretches for miles. The high/low tides being a different but interesting challenge so remember to bring slops or shoes you don’t mind getting wet. The staff are super friendly and keen to assist anytime. Perhaps lean a few Portuguese phrases to make your interaction a bit easier.||||We made use of the 6 hour visit to Paradise Island and were treated like royalty - give it a try.||||Although there are quite few mozzies, it is not a Malaria area, but do bring anti-mozzie spray. The beds do have mozzie nets. ||

Incredible location with superb ocean view from every room. Service and room condition are not always at five star level which is the reason for the 4 out of 5 instead of 5/5.|We experienced nearly all extra activities offered (spa, dune surf and several snorkelling tour). All great although quite pricey (considering the cost of the hotel, would seem reasonable to offer those at a discounted value as they are important to fully benefit of the exceptional location). ||We experienced a few issues when we arrived and resolution could have been faster considering the level of the hotel.||Food and drink option altough reasonably good could be improved (particularly the breakfast and evening buffet which are not always replenished with some cold food).||Anyhow the incredible location helps to forget all the minor issues experienced during the stay but value for money could be improved a bit following our recommendations.
