The Best Places to Visit in November | Condé Nast Traveler

"I can't think of a better base in Chiang Mai: although it's just a short tuk‑tuk ride from Old Town, the property feels like a country retreat thanks to a bamboo wall encircling the resort, rooms with super‑sized terraces, an infinity pool surrounded by lily ponds, and a decadent afternoon tea service." - Caitlin Morton

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? It’s just a short tuk tuk ride from Chiang Mai’s Old Town to this gorgeous urban resort that’s hidden behind a bamboo wall. The surrounding mid-rises and city bustle melt away as soon as you enter the complex, which is made up of a series of low-slug modern buildings and green spaces that are bordered by the Mae Ping River. Thanks to the clean, uncluttered style and lush, spacious grounds, the vibe is one of a country retreat dropped into the center of a city. What's the backstory? Originally opened in the early 2000s as The Chedi, Chiang Mai, the resort is now part of the luxury Anantara brand, which is based in Thailand and has hotels all over the world. The complex was designed by the late Australian architect Kerry Hill, who specialized in creating visually striking hotels in tropical destinations. Here, Hill has seamlessly married contemporary chic with reminders of the Thai Old World; the most notable example of the latter is the century-old heritage house—the former British Consulate—that now serves as the signature The Service 1921 Restaurant. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? Whether your room looks out at the gardens or the river, and is a deluxe option or a suite, you’ll enjoy a seamless flow between the indoors and nature here, as all accommodations have super-sized terraces furnished with cushy daybeds. It’s easy to make yourself at home amid all the polished wood and sharp lines, thanks to touches like Lanna Kingdom–style artwork, yoga mats, freestanding bathtubs, and rain showers stocked with Anantara Spa products. Tech is limited to flatscreens, Bose sound systems and coffee machines—plus stocked wine fridges. At night, look out for turndown gifts like locally sourced sweets or trinkets. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi is fast and complimentary throughout the resort. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Set in what was once the British Consulate of Chiang Mai, the resort’s sole dining outlet is The Service 1921 Restaurant and Bar, which serves Northern Thai, Vietnamese, and Sichuan fare. (Don’t miss signatures like the Love at First Zip cocktail and the deep-fried soft-shell crab appetizer, served with tamarind sauce.) As a nod to the building's history, there's a secret intelligence theme, with a "wall of spies" in the bar and a private dining room hidden behind a bookcase. The British connection is also celebrated in the famous Afternoon Tea, which stuffs you with things like savory pies, scones with clotted cream, and a tower of treats designed by Belgian pâtissier Roger Van Damme. And the service? One of Thailand’s female national Muy Thai champions is on hand to introduce you to the fitness regimes (or help up your game) in a private class, while a dedicated Street Wise Guru can lead you on insider tours of lesser-known markets and temples, traditional coffee houses, street food stalls, and more. What type of travelers will you find here? The chic design and Anantara name draw everyone from Thai celebrities and American honeymooners to food lovers attracted by the unique restaurant and decadent afternoon tea. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? Walk along historic Changklan Street to the old French Library, which is stocked with rare and vintage books, or to sites like the old Governor’s Residence and the Chai Mongkol temple; at the latter you can release a fish into the river and receive a Buddhist blessing. Also nearby are several of the bustling markets that the city is known for, from the Saturday and Sunday Markets to the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. Is there anything you'd change? I only wish I could have stayed longer. (And maybe that there was one other dining outlet—though you can get room service, too.) Any other hotel features worth noting? After a day exploring temples and hectic markets, nothing beats a swim in the 112-foot infinity pool, which is surrounded by lily ponds and loungers, and overlooks the river. More relaxation can be found in the spa, which offers a mix of Lanna-inspired rituals and Western treatments, and via the “slumber guru,” who can help optimize your room for a good night’s sleep. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? A stylish respite from the tourist trail, but still close to the action." - Sandra Ramani

The Best Resorts in Asia: 2018 Readers' Choice Awards

"Anantara has upped the ante in this posh town on the Mae Ping River. The 84 sleek rooms, protected from urban noise by two sets of thick doors, have sweeping floor-to-ceiling views of Thai river life. (There are also 24 serviced suites just across the road, which are optimal for families or extended stays.) Daybeds indoors and out are a relaxing pleasure, as are teak chaises by the riverfront pool. The hotel wraps around the open-air restaurant, where an East-meets-West menu is served all day long—think a breakfast buffet, loaded with fruits and juices, and later, flavorful plates of Kashmir chili and Indian spice–marinated chicken. A wrought iron staircase twists up to the rooftop bar. If you're looking to spice up your staid vacation itinerary, activities worth booking include a Muay Thai kickboxing class and a sunset river cruise." - CNT Editors, Betsy Blumenthal

My family and I had a wonderful stay at Ching Mai Anantara ! The property is beautifully designed, surrounded by lush greenery that makes you feel completely relaxed. My room was spacious, comfortable, and very well maintained. Breakfast offered a great variety of fresh and delicious options, including some lovely local dishes. What impressed me most was the staff – they were warm, professional, and always ready to help, which made the whole experience feel extra special. Whether for a relaxing holiday or a family getaway, this resort is truly a perfect choice. I’ll definitely come back!

I had a cozy experience at Anantara Chiang Mai. Nice location as the neighborhood is calm and quiet despite being near the markets. ||We stayed at a 2 bedroom suite that could fit 6 people comfortably. Room is neat and functional though the lighting at the bathrooms can be improved as its quite dark. The washing machine needs an upgrade as well. ||The service we experienced was great. All the staff that we encountered are courteous and helpful, especially Ms. Bam, who accommodated us from check in to check out. Breakfast buffet is superb!||Great job.

This is a review of a very special 48th wedding anniversary dinner at the Bodhi Terrace in the Anantara. We started with delicious cocktails in their Brit bar before heading to the Bodhi with its wonderful river views. The food & the service by our waiter Song were equally stunning. The river prawns in red curry are the size of lobster & totally delicious. And with our coffee appeared an anniversary chocolate cake which totally made our evening. We weren’t staying in the hotel but close by at the Amata Lanna boutique hotel but we weren’t staying so glad we’d thought to book our special dinner here. A truly five star experience from start to finish!

What an amazing and a memorable stay! ||We spent (4) nights at the fabulous Anantara Chiang Mai this month; wished we could have extended our trip. Everything was a total perfection from the airport pick up at arrival to drop off (we booked a package that included the noted service). The Kasara River Suite is absolutely stunning, spacious (love the outdoor lanai and sitting area), and very private. The breakfast spread was something to look forward to every morning. We loved our table overlooking the Ping River, under the (2) majestic Bodhi Trees. By the second day, the very attentive staff remembered our table preference. The pool is also beautifully set up (alongside an L-shaped Koi pond) and it was such a relaxing spot for us after our daily afternoon happy hour (at The Verandah 1921) and a long day exploring the old city and temples. ||As a repeat visitors to CM, we really like the location of the resort. It is just outside of the old city perimeter walls, is easily accessible via a tuk tuk and or you can also stroll slowly for 20 minutes more or less into town. Once we arrive in the lobby and the compound, we feel very much remove from the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai and entering a bubble of serenity and tranquility. The evening before checking out, we made a reservation at the resort's gorgeous 1921 House Restaurant (yes, the structure is a landmark from 1921). We had such a great meal, service, and again....the most genuine hospitable service from the team. We also probably had some of the best sleeps on this trip. ||At last, we would like to thank everyone from Anantara CM to make our stay one of the best highlights in our itinerary (Charles, First, Mark, and all the other team members). We can't wait to return next year! Bravo!

We stayed in a 2-bedroom suite for 4D3N which was extremely roomy for my family of 3 (I, my wife, and our 1Y1M son). We were warmly welcomed by Khun Bam and greatly serviced by all the staff members. The hotel provided all the baby amenities, baby guards, and crib upon request. We turned the sofa bed in the living room into a mini baby playpen where I had a great time with my son. Will definitely stay longer here the next time visit Chiang Mai.||Peter & Family

We were impressed by the size of the resort — really spacious. The overall environment Amantara created was so nice — calm and peaceful. Its design shows both aesthetic and functional values. I like the welcome massage which was comfortable and made me feel welcomed. Plus, the staff is caring, helpful and commendable because my friend had allergies out of unknown reasons and they assisted us and offered help to us. We did have an enjoyable stay!

Cannot fault. Serviced suites liked to main resort via bridge. Has rooftop pool which is small and lovely. Rooms spacious modern and spotless. Had 2 bedroom suite. They look over the town not the river as they are at the back but not unattractive, plenty of trees etc. staff are absolutely wonderful, interested in what you did that day, attentive, just genuinely lovely. International breakfast is sublime, plenty of Far Eastern delights as well as fresh baked pastries and “ British” choices . Lots of detox juices and an a la carte with things such as eggs Benedict with caviar ( just a sprinkle but , what a luxury). Main pool area by river is amazing, koi carp, lilies, poolside drinks service. Had cocktails and bar food at the Brit bar which was incredibly reasonably priced for such a hotel ( cocktails around a tenner ) . This is a true luxury hotel with the best staff . Will be back

Great hotel, superb service, room is a good size, no garden rooms seem to have a really good view but it didn’t matter. Staff were very helpful. Lovely design in the hotel the only niggle is the lighting in the room. The sitting area has NO light near it, a simple fix it would seem. If you want to read at night you have to sit at the desk. Would recommend the hotel though, great location.
