I stayed at the Anantara Uluwatu Resort for one week during a recent holiday in Bali. It is a stunning property with outstanding facilities which proved to be very welcome as the relentless local traffic can, on occasion, disinsentivise leaving the hotel. The large modern resort occupies an idyllic position on a clifftop overlooking the Indian Ocean. The facilities include a large communal swimming pool which was temporarily off-limits to guests during my stay in order to enable emergency maintenance work. This did not prove to be a major problem as the management had facilitated alternative arrangements for guests by making available the pool in one of the three-bedroom villas. Guests were also provided with a complimentary buffet service and selected drinks in the adjacent villa. In the event, our accommodation came with its own pool. There is, in addition, a stunning spa in which my partner and I underwent rejuvenating massages administered by the delightful and very capable Sri and Agustini. Guests take their breakfasts or dinners in the beautiful main restaurant, with spectacular views of the ocean, on the sixth floor. The breakfasts are particularly memorable owing to the vast array of foods intended to cater to the culinary tastes of the wide diversity of ethnicities of the guests. Also on that floor is a Japanese restaurant. The luxurious rooms (referred to as suites) are decadently spacious, designed and maintained to the highest standards and kept scrupulously clean. In our case, there was a balcony overlooking the ocean which comprised a lounging area, a hot tub and a swimming pool. But the jewel in the crown of this property is its staff. Without exception, every member of staff with whom we came into contact was helpful, efficient, enthusiastic, courteous, charming and professional; the reception staff was particularly accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone and they made whatever services that they provided appear to have been a pleasure, rather than a duty. If I have one complaint it relates to the beautiful beach below the hotel which is accessed principally by a multi-level staircase. For most guests, negotiating the staircase is not too much of an effort, but for those who are elderly or frail it can be challenging, while for those who are disabled it is downright impossible. Surely, for a hotel of this calibre it would be neither unreasonable nor inappropriate to install an elevator or a funicular in order to enable as many guests as possible to enjoy the pleasures of bathing in the sea. Notwithstanding this small matter, the Anantara Uluwatu Resort is a truly outstanding venue for a holiday in Bali. Luxury, of course, comes at a price, but this property represents value for money. Would I recommend staying here? Unhesitatingly. Would I return? In a heartbeat.
