This place is a must see! The church and fortress are beautiful and very well preserved, with stunning views over the surrounding mountains and reservoir. It was free to visit, easy to explore on your own, and genuinely interesting both historically and visually. Definitely worth stopping here if you’re driving the Georgian Military Road! Beautiful and historic place with stunning views over the lake and mountains. The fortress is well preserved and really worth exploring. You can climb the towers for some amazing photos. There are a few small shops and stalls around, but parking can get a bit crowded. Overall, a lovely stop on the way to Gudauri and definitely worth visiting.

Ananuri Fortress is one of those places that instantly transports you back in time. ⛪🏰 It’s located along the Georgian Military Highway, surrounded by stunning mountain views and overlooking the beautiful Aragvi River — honestly, the view itself is worth the stop! The fortress is well-preserved, with stone towers, ancient walls, and a church that’s rich with carvings and history. You can climb up the towers (a bit steep, but fun!) for an incredible panoramic view. It’s a quick stop on the way to Kazbegi, and many tour guides include it in their itinerary — if yours doesn’t, insist on going. You won’t regret it! A perfect mix of history, architecture, and scenic beauty — definitely a 5/5 from me.

Great place to relax before going up in Gudauri. Lots of activities to do there. Sightseeing, you can try their boat ride, there are also some food trucks below. Good for family stopover. Great ground view of Aragvi waters. We tried some family picture there and there is a playground for the kiddos. Its a complete place and great for weekend for the family as well.

Probably the best gem along the Georgian Military Highway. Its a stunning fortress which looks absolutely magical with the water reservoir in the background. I read that you need hours to explore, but we could saw everything in 20-30mins so its feasible for a quick stop. Also parking was 3 lari but entry is free

Beautiful and would recommend when you are near (but nothing super special or worth driving hours) because you see a castle from the outside and a simple church, it is beautiful with the sea and the mountains but all quite simple. Info: A small market is in front of it with good priced cashmere and wool scarfs and ponchos and a toilette for 1 GEL.
