Road Tripping Through Small Town Wisconsin

"Head to the remote Anaway Place for the most peaceful night's sleep you could imagine, with a slight detour to the small village of Spring Green proper first. Check into one of Anaway Place’s seven secluded cabins—all of which are fitted with massive windows ripe for stargazing—before winding down in front of a wood-burning fireplace."

My family stayed with Anaway on a last minute get together for the holidays. We stayed in The Barn. I cannot say enough positive things about Anaway and the property hosts. They went above and beyond in all aspects to make sure our stay was wonderful. The Barn itself was truly lovely and magical for the holiday season. We hosted our annual fondue and there was plenty of space for a bunch of small kiddos and adults. I loved particularly how there were a lot of separate spaces where people could go and gete quiet time, too. Each bedroom was lovely with an attached bath - I totally didn't except that! The beds and linens were fantastic. I slept so well. I also made great use of the soaking tub! The shop was also amazing for essentials, having toys to entertain the kids, and little spa things to enhance relaxation. The owners said they plan on expanding next year to include yoga and massage work on property which seems like a great fit and I would love to take advantage of. My only wish which is like really tiny is that kitchen basics were a little more well stocked. We couldn't locate salt and pepper, etc. Also, and this is really tiny, the hand soap was a bit watered down. It would have been great if they included a few more luxury items like maybe a small soap from the store for the bath or hand lotion. I really think little extra luxuries would have really made this experience super unforgettable. All that being said, we really hope to return next year! I can tell the owners work so hard and I hope they achieve a lot of success in the coming year!

For the most secluded, relaxing getaway, this is your place! We enjoyed cooking in the full kitchen and warming near the indoor wood burning fireplace. The wooded backyard was perfect to roast s’mores. We will definitely be back and bringing more family with us to experience the beauty.

My boyfriend and I booked Anaway Place to celebrate his birthday after falling in love with the beautiful photos online. We arrived in the evening and check-in was easy and the cabin was simple to locate. Navigating the plowed gravel path proved to be a bit nerve-wracking; we were driving a 2-wheel-drive sedan on hardened snow uphill. The path was narrow, just big enough for our vehicle, and completely unlit (we arrived around 5:30 but it was already dark). When we parked, we were stunned to see that the walkway to the cabin—about 15-20 feet —had not been shoveled at all. This wasn’t compacted snow. It was untouched, ankle-deep snow with nothing but the remnants of previous peoples’ footprints. We had to haul all of our belongings through this, trudging the entire way. For a property with a strict two-night minimum, it is entirely reasonable to expect safe, accessible walkways for individuals who will most definitely be bringing multiple bags. The deck was marginally better. However snow and ice were left everywhere, including on the steps leading up to the hot tub. While walking up to check out the tub, I slipped and fell on the steps. Luckily, I'm a young adult and sustained no injury– but I shudder to imagine if it had been an older guest or a child. A simple clearing and salting of the deck could have prevented this. Inside, things didn’t improve. The front entrance opens directly into the bedroom, meaning we were forced to track melting snow, slush, and salt straight into the sleeping space. There wasn’t even a floor mat to wipe our shoes. My boyfriend eventually found a shovel and salt outside and shoveled a walkway himself, while I spent time wiping up puddles from the floor with a roll of paper towel. This is not what anyone expects (nor should have to do) upon arrival at a premium cabin property. We tried to stay optimistic, but between the layout and multiple safety concerns, the experience fell far below expectations. We immediately began looking for somewhere else to stay for our second night and ultimately booked a four-star hotel with better amenities for less money than Anaway’s nightly price (for its cheapest cabin mind you). Our departure was the final straw. After loading up all of our belongings, things took a turn for the worse. The plowed gravel driveway is a one way path so there is no room for turning around. However, provided there was a small plowed section that met the plowed path at an angle. We understood that we were meant to back into the small plowed section and complete a Y-turn, in order to drive out. The small plowed section was uphill in reference to the larger plowed path. To add on, the hardened snow underneath was slippery. This meant that when my boyfriend went to back up into the small plowed portion, my 2wd car only was backing uphill on a slippery surface and could not get all the way up in order to turn. We got stuck, as we were unable to pull more forward due to the area being completely covered in snow. My boyfriend and I retrieved the shovel and salt off of the deck. We took turns shoveling out in front of the car to create more turning room. It was the worst way to start my boyfriend’s birthday. After almost a half hour of effort in total; we were able to turn around and get out. As lifelong Wisconsinites, we fully understand winter conditions. But for businesses operating here year-round, snow removal is the bare minimum. Continuously accepting winter bookings without properly clearing paths, walkways, steps, and turning areas is unacceptable and dangerous. What made the experience the most frustrating is how curated—almost misleading—the website feels. There is no recommendation of 4WD vehicles (commonplace for lodging operators in rural areas with lackluster roadways) and no transparency about the Nest’s front door opening directly into the bedroom. Had we known any of this, we never would have booked this cabin. I hope this review helps future guests make an informed decision—and I hope Anaway Place takes guest safety and transparency more seriously moving forward.

We stayed at the glass house. The photos on the site do not exactly represent the experience. It's upscale camping, but the bathroom and kitchenette area only have a screen so in mid October is freezing out there and smells of mildew. The main house is dusty on the fan, the blinds and behind and around the bed. The mouse trap in the window was obvious of a rodent intrusion. My allergies to mold kicked up bad and ended up sick by day 3 when we checked out. It definitely has an issue in the main house with this. The trails are great but need to be maintained. The store is the cutest thing ever with fresh produce available and Alec is great! A few more towels would be nice or a way to request some...there are only 2. It was less than expected with the severe allergic reaction. The wifi issue has been resolved, but the cabin itself needs an overhaul. None of the dishes match either and are in limited supply.

We stayed in the glass house. It was a wonderful retreat, where we were able to reconnect as a couple. We enjoyed the peacefulness of the grounds and had beautiful weather to hike. We can’t wait to come back and stay in another cabin!

This place is awesome. We are already looking forward to going back and trying one of the other cabins. If you book the Woodland House, you may want to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get up there.

Absolutely serene experience. If you're looking to detach from the hustle of life, this is the destination. We stayed in June and at night we heard barred owls calling and the most unbelievable (and I mean that) light show from a forest full of fireflies. It was like a fairy tale. We stayed in the Hillside unit and it was 100% clean and fresh, totally isolated, stocked with anything you need and it really felt like we were in a tree house with the windows and view. We had nightly fires in the fire pit, cooked on the "camp style" grill out back and just relaxed. The host/owners were friendly but just let us be. There is onsite firewood for ten bucks a rack (enough for a good evening blaze) and the mini store onsite has everything you need. Super bonus was seeing a Piebald deer at dusk (Piebald deer are white-tailed deer with a rare genetic condition that causes patches of white hair to appear amidst their normal brown coat). No TV, barely any cell service but remarkable strong wifi. We are going back next Summer, already booked the Woodland House!

The Barn was absolutely perfect for our family getaway. It exceeded our expectations! The place was warm, cozy, and fully equipped to make you feel right at home. Bring your hiking boots and get ready to explore 110 acres of natural beauty. Quiet and private, you’ll forget there are 6 others cabins in the property. Make sure to visit the Anaway store and say hello to the owners! I honestly couldn’t take any bad pictures during our stay. The whole place was just picture perfect! Already planning a “Fall season” stay.
