Wanted to give it 3 stars to support local but this place was so bad, I couldn't. Came here on a Sunday evening and ordered tom yum soup and papaya salad, medium spice. Both came out to $30, quite pricey but wanted something different other than burgers and pizza around here. We tried Thai foods at a nearby spot the other day and it was good, so wanted to give this spot the benefit of the doubt. However, the foods here were pretty bad taste wise, it gave me really bad stomach problems the whole night. My stomach can handle very spicy peppers, it only hurts when I eat something really bad. I was having problems all night and I knew something was off with the foods.
I am part Thai and grew up eating mostlyThai/laos foods, tried foods from different styles and have been learning recipes from several Thai dishes. I cannot back up the foods I've had here. The papaya salad I ordered tasted not even remotely close to what it should tastes. It was sickeningly sweet and odd tasting. I've had different versions with papaya, cucumber, carrots, long green beans, etc that had a good blend of salty, sour, spicy and a little sweet. This one tasted like they melted sweet red chili sauce and vinegar together on top of the papaya/carrot/green bean combo. The cherry tomatoes are usually chopped up and mixed with the papaya salad but this one had whole tomatoes! Even whole peanuts! It's like they bs the dish and made it way too sweet for american pallette with no hints of fish/shrimp paste. I didn't taste any citrus sourness. The redeeming factor I'd give the dish is that medium spicy was pretty spicy.
The tom yum soup was also pretty sweet. I usually add lime juice in mines after I turn off the heat, but I didn't taste any citrus sourness in this soup. The sweetness overpowered all the other flavors of the soup and I couldn't tell if it had any kaffir leaves, galangal, lemongrass and fish sauce. I did find tiny pieces of galanga and lemon grass at the bottom though. Again, the medium spice was pretty spicy, only good thing about the soup. I found weird chunks at the bottom of the soup like ends of green onions and a piece of broccoli? Did I just eat some leftover mash? Whatever I had, I got sick the entire night. I'm trying not to think the horrible possibilities of what I ate.
For $30 I expected decent Thai foods but instead was left with way too sweet and odd tasting foods. The flavor profiles of the foods were way off with the sweet overpowering everything. Granted they speak Thai at the restaurant so it's made by Thai folks, but why would they bastardize the dishes so much? If you are into sweet, then you may like this place.
