This was tough for me to admit. Andon-Reid has won awards, been voted top B+B and is listed as the highest rated B+B all over the place. I wasn't going to be won over easily - I had stayed at a few nice B+Bs, some top notch hotels, and some great places in Europe in my short traveling career.
Andon-Reid was truly a memorable time, staffed by two fantastic owners, and it deserves the 5 star rating I'm giving it.
The entry-level room we stayed in was somewhat small (let's say cozy), but very very nice, with gas fireplace we were instructed on. The bathroom was beautifully tiled, everything was in great shape. We toured some of the larger rooms as well, the library especially looked like a dream come true. Staying in there if/when we go back.
The workout/game/TV area downstairs was great - you can go down, plug things in, and workout at your own pace. Or you can take an official course (but I'm on vacation). Getting some curls and running in before 8am was nice.
The breakfast - well, let's get right to the heart of the matter. 3 course breakfast, every day. A fruit/grain combo, usually with a nice flavored yogurt, started things off - and the wife and I were inspired to include this in our daily life. The second course was a main dish, from pancake/pastries to quiche to just a good time overall. The third course is, of course, dessert. So, so good. Apple tarts, chocolate cake, peanut butter cake - it's all phenominal, and a big part of the 5 stars. You will share a table with 2 or 4 other guests, so be prepared for conversation, introductions, and all that.
Wireless internet was complimentary - I had an issue setting up the protocol at first but figured it out like a good little nerd. Ann was very attentive and helpful. TV is not in any of the rooms, but there's one in the common room and another with DVD player downstairs. You're in the country, disconnect.
What makes this place great - beyond the amazing extras we added, like the wine and fruit/cheese platter, and the top notch shape of everything, and inviting setup - what made it the best was the service. Ron is running around all day, doing everything he can to make your stay perfect. He's entertaining and charming, he'll help you find your way or plot your day, and he'll answer any question you have.
I wasn't looking for this kind of social interaction, I'll be honest...but it was great. It made the stay more memorable, more special, than other B+Bs might be. While there's a lot of marketing and effort that goes into the good ratings and awards, when it comes down to it it can't be faked. These two know what they're doing and do it the best, hands down.
