Andrade’s Honokaa Cafe

This is the quintessential mom and pop restaurant. The husband greeted us and jokingly called himself the waterboy and waited on us the whole time we were there making pleasant conversation and getting to know us. His wife the cooking professor came to our table and explained what was available. They make stuff in small batches and some had been eaten clean out. It was a wonderful experience and we will come back every time we are in town

Charming and attentive couple with amazing food and great conversation. The Monday fish special is my new favorite weekly outing with perfectly marinated oil and tomato sauce and salad dressing.

Wish I took pictures of the food🤣 This place was amazing! The food was delicious! Had the vina dosh, pineapple spare ribs, Portuguese bean soup and a root beer float. Everything was awesome and the owners are literally the sweetest and so cool. Loved this place and will definitely be back. Really made me miss my papa.

Yes. This is a must. It is a very nice older couple. The building has obviously been newly updated (very simplistic and tasteful). But the real star is the food (or the man who is wonderful to chat with). I normally am not a fan of sweet bread but this was just so tasty. My husband and I shared the chicken pesto sandwich and the turkey sandwich. Not really sure which was my favorite bc they were both so good. Definitely put this on your must try list. Also some very cute shops with nice vendors in the town.

Andrade’s Cafe is a great example of a family business. Their business keeps the town alive and makes tourists stop by. The food was fantastic. The atmosphere made you want to come back and see these people again and again. If you are nearby come and eat there!! ❤️❤️❤️

Excellent food and hospitality at this Cafe is truly unique. We ordered the Aqua Pasa, Chicken Pesto Sandwich and the Lilikoi-Glazed Ham Sandwich. We also tried the freshly baked macademia nut pie with ice cream, the pie was very delicious and moist. So glad we decided to stop by this family run Cafe. Highly recommend this Cafe.

Archie and Marlene are amazing people! You can see the joy and pride they have in running the cafe through their interactions with their customers. We were lucky to get a table after a short wait and had a great time dining here. The food was fantastic, but Archie and Marlene were the ones that made our experience great!

This was our 2nd trip to the Big Island and this time we stayed on the Kona side. We had to come back to the Hilo side and visit this cafe. Archie and Marlene are the sweetest people you can ever meet. They are so warm and treat us like family. Everything was delicious from the Portuguese bean soup, Lilikoi glazed ham sandwich and spicy pork plate. The freshly baked walnut pie made by Marlene was the best! I would 1000% recommend this place. I look forward to visiting this cafe and this lovely couple.

My family came here and ate a wonderful meal family style. The owners are so sweet and easy to talk to, you feel like your mom is cooking for you in her own kitchen. All the food felt very clean. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

This place is amazing. The sandwiches were top tier. Had the chicken pesto and the ham. The couple who runs the place is adorable and so sweet! Very knowledgeable about the island. Overall awesome service and just as awesome food.

This place is simply amazing. The best sandwiches (not burger) we've had in a long time made with Portuguese bread. And the service is brilliant. The owners are 4th and 5th generation, and they have a genuine care in ensuring their customers are looked after, and well fed. Reminds me of an old fashioned milk bar from the 70's/80's. They even played the ukelele and sang happy birthday to our youngest son. What a wonderful experience!

I want to high five the owners here, and give them a round of applause. Their food is home cooked; it's like stepping right into grandma's kitchen. As a matter of fact, the lady cooking assured us the recipe for the soup and one of the daily specials came from her grandmother. There are only a handful or so tables for eating inside, so if you come when busy you may wanna take it to go. The price is right, and the food is delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about their turkey sandwich made with fresh made sweet bread, pineapple milkshake and soup.

The best food!!! I have soy, gluten and dairy allergy and the sweet owner of the restaurant who does all the cooking told me exactly what I could and could not have. I had the most amazing spicy pork with rice and salad with dressing to accommodate those allergies. Smells like my grandmas house.. my husband had beef stew with rice, salad and homemade amazing rolls, (not GF, but he loved them!) My husband had to try the walnut pie.. served with ice cream and he said it was delicious! Coming back before we fly out to try the fish! Sweetest couple ever here.. you have to try it!

This restaurant is a GEM!! Wonderful food, friendly and fast service. We had an AMAZING meal of stew (hubby) and a giant, fresh Turkey sandwich on fluffy, thick Portuguese bread (me). The walnut pie was to DIE FOR and we even got to meet the sweet woman who made us the food! They shared the history of the Andrade building with us and she's the daughter of the original Andrade family, and this will be passed on to her children as well. What an absolutely wonderful spot!

What a great stop! The owners took time to not only serve some of the tastiest food but the history of the town and the owner's family history. This place is worth the stop. The food was so good I forgot to take photos before we devoured it.

My mom and I are in town visiting family for Thanksgiving. They happened to be open the day of. We met the family, who were the kindest souls, and ordered food to go. The entire time we waited, we were treated like friends - not guests. The food was simply amazing. I had a chicken pesto sandwich - and the flavor of the pesto, mixed with the sweet bread was unforgettable. Amazing food, loving service, and the best family atmosphere.

My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Andrade Honoka'a Cafe. We were looking for a late morning cup of coffee and got there right at 11 o'clock when Marlene was unlocking the door. And not only was the coffee good, but she served us a slice of amazing homemade walnut pie, which I had never had before. It is her grandmother's recipe. We soon realized that we weren't just there for something to eat and drink. We had a wonderful chat with the owners Archie and Marlene and learned a lot about the history of Honoka'a. They are lovely people and take tremendous pride in their town as well as their restaurant. They are both Hawaii natives and Marlene was born and raised in Honoka'a. Highly recommend you stop in their café if you are in the neighborhood.

Portuguese bean soup is delicious. Very quaint and personable café run by sweet Andrade family.

i have never had a bad meal here in 3 years and probably 12-15 visits. i have taken many guests here, who find the owners delightful and the food a pleasant treat. the offerings are not numerous, but i always find something that appeals to me, and the specials change daily, i suspect so that the owner/chef doesn't get bored. the owner chef is granddaughter of rose andrade, after who the town's rodeo ring is named. a true daughter of portugal (madeira and azores), she has lots of history to impart, and her irish husband waiter is a delight. the prices are surprisingly reasonable and the portugese sweet bread is wonderful. it's worth the trip to honokaa just to eat at andrade's no mater which side of north kohala you live on.

Food was great. The owners are very sweet and take pride in their family's history and the towns history. The service was nice and they were so welcoming. They gave us a great beach recommendation as well! Lovely folks

Absolutely amazing. We actually stopped in town for another restaurant, that because of covid was closed. We were warmly greeted and treated like royalty. May I suggest the "Pork Sliders", and don't be fooled by "sliders" - this is a huge meal and it is delicious! Make sure to check out the desserts, one customer was buying them up for a friend.

Oh gosh, what a lovely surprise this place was! If you're not into touristy places and you are looking for something that's down-to-earth, no frills, home style cooking, and reasonably priced, do not miss Andrades! Seriously, this was some of the best food I've had on the island! The braised ribs with pineapple are a must! You can tell it's taken hours to cook to perfection: so tender and so rich in flavor. This place is excellent to come to if you are REALLY hungry -- the portion sizes will not disappoint. The owners are absolutely adorable and so very sweet and wonderful to talk to. I cannot recommend this place more!

Originally, we just passed by and wanted to use the bathroom here. Didn't expected they have such a great dessert and service. Homemade walnut pie is amazing good!!! Not too sweet and the taste is just about right! The grandpa is super sweet also! Pls don't miss this hidden gem! Highly recommended!

A little gem in Honoka'a. The kind of family owned and operated business that you are so happy to support. Lovely couple do all of the work and do it so very carefully, given covid distancing and sanitation requirements. They could not be more friendly, hard working, and hospitable if they tried! Many of the menu items have Portuguese influence since this is part of the couple's heritage. Seeing the Portuguese pork sliders arrive at your table is almost entertaining, as the bread is the thickest slice you may ever see. Some of the menu items come with the Portuguese bread and some with Hawaiian rolls. I tasted the bread and it has some nice flavors. My Pineapple Ribs meal was a very generous portion and quite delicious. The meat was perfectly tender and the flavors were wonderful. It comes with your choice of white or brown rice which was prepared perfectly, and a yummy slaw like salad - lettuce and cabbage with a really good, light dressing. The owner will make unsweetened iced tea from a bag of your choosing, and he timed the steep at 4minutes exactly. It was jasmine and it was perfect. Every diner there during our lunch exclaimed at the portion sizes and was very complimentary about whatever they had ordered. For those who care, the bathroom is spotless! This will be a mandatory meal every year!

Terrific place and terrific food. The sandwiches are huge and made with fresh Hawaiian sweetbread. If Archie is working you are in for a treat. He's forgotten more about Hawaii then you will ever know but is actually more interested in you and where you are from. Seek him out. Oh, and if his wife comes out from the kitchen and says try the pie she just made, try the pie.

Cannot speak highly enough of this place. We came with 8 people and all of us had clean plates by the end. The sandwiches are huge, the soups were both amazing, the ribs were fantastic, and the pie was to die for. It was like having your grandmother cook for you. The owners are also so kind and welcoming.

This place was incredible - my girlfriend and I stopped in as it was the only restaurant still open when we were in town! The couple who own the place are so nice and have a real assortment of talents in the kitchen, as all the food and baked goods were incredible. I had the braised short rib with pineapple, salad, and rice, and my girlfriend had the massive pork "sliders," which came on giant, fresh baked, pillowy Hawaiian rolls. Almost forgot - we had Thai summer rolls to start, which were plentiful, refreshing, and delicious. A must in Hawaiian cattle country!!

The Portuguese pork sliders and the beef stew was some of the tastiest food we had during our 10 day visit on the big island. The combination of fluffy sweet bread with slightly spicy, slightly vinegary, garlicky pork was divine. Side salad is a much needed and welcomed addition. They are absurdly friendly and exhibit the aloha spirit 100%. We didn't even get to try the egg tarts because the person who came in before us bought all of them - but those are apparently a must have. ALSO, Honokaa is such a great town to visit if you're going to Waipio Valley or elsewhere - it's really super cute and has some great views of the ocean.

Incredibly kind owners! The food was amazing. I had beef stew and tried both soups on the menu. Every dish is served with their own baked bread. This place is recommended by the locals.

I ordered the special, which was spicy pork, accompanied by a roll, salad, and rice. It was delicious and I appreciated having the choice between brown and white rice. For dessert I had the walnut pie, very similar to pecan pie but not overly sweet. I will definitely go back to try one of their regular entrées. I also enjoyed chatting with the genial hosts.

Our group of five stopped here for lunch yesterday, and we're so glad we did! The cafe is run by a lovely and kind older couple, with generational ties to the locale. The food was plentiful, tasty, very reasonably priced, and obviously prepared with love. We wolfed down the "bifanas", Portuguese pork sliders marinated in wine, olive oil, chili, and garlic and served on huge sweetbread slices. Other hits with our group were the Portuguese bean soup, the homemade buns, the coconut milkshakes, and the Thai tea. One of us managed a big slice of warm walnut pie, with vanilla ice cream. The other sandwiches and desserts looked to be just as yummy, but we couldn't try them all... next time. We left so full, that all that we managed later was a very light supper!

This little place is amazing!!!! We came here on our Hawaii vacation with family. All of the dishes were delicious. My favorite was the Portuguese pork sliders. Also the owners were great and customer service was excellent. You must visit this cafe when you are on the Big Island.

We have gotten take out here many times. The food is incredible and the flavors are perfect. We've had the pork cops with apples, chicken pot pie (amazing), summer rolls with peanut sauce, walnut pie and numerous other items. The gal that does the baking is beyond talented and also does cakes to order. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for home cooking and excellent service.

This place is absolutely amazing. Small family shop offering Hawaiian-Portuguese fusion food and delicious pastries. We had the the local fish special which was incredible and the chicken pesto sandwich - it comes on Hawaiian sweet bread, with homemade pesto and roasted dark chicken meat. The Portuguese custard tarts were to die for, we bought all the ones they had left. The folks running the shop are really sweet too, it's a really homey feel.
