"Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line A few blocks east of Goldsworthy's more prominent Spire is this installation of fallen trees snaking through the still standing ones. Wood Line is located within the cypress grove near the intersection of Presidio Boulevard and West Pacific Avenue, just off Lovers’ Lane. Thousands drive by this spot and never notice it. It's a beautiful work. View it, walk around it, walk on it, experience how it changes over time."

Hard to complain. Beautiful, and the winding effect is cool. There’s a street very close by but the trees muffle the noise and it feels very quiet. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit this place, but if you’re in the area and especially if you’re on the nearby trails already, highly recommend you drop by. 10-20 minutes suffices.

Google
Very scenic and beautiful short trail. It had rained so it felt very rejuvenating. They have put coyote signs everywhere as it is dog friendly. Good spot of family photos.

Google
Nice place for a walk. It has a long road for you to walk on

Google
Magical photogenic spot! You need to stand on a log or slightly higher ground to get the winding path effect. We came around early afternoon. The lighting was perfect with some filter lol. I would imagine if you come around the golfer hour, it will be even more breathtaking!

Tim Shipman

Google
A beautiful and subtle spot that's easy to miss. You can stand at the top and look down, or just climb on the treeline

Google
Cool area/neighborhood. Trail is short.lots of eucalyptus.

Google
Pretty place, busier than I'd expected so I didn't stay long. Also hard to get to if ur footing it. Busses only get u so close, then it's a pretty steep jaunt the rest of the way.

Google
Neat trail hidden in the edge of the city. Free to walk around and free parking. Limited parking however if you drive to the residential area there is a lot of street parking

Yelp
After paying a visit to Lover's Lane nearby (running parallel), we came here to check out Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line, a lovely art sculpture made of tree trunks, intertwined within the forest of eucalyptus trees. We parked just outside the presidio gate (direct pathway closed this past weekend due to what looks like construction or repair). Had no trouble walking to and through the grove of trees, along the trail of logs winding through the forest like a snake. Even found a friendly slimy banana slug crawling on the art! Enjoyed the fresh air and spending time with one of my faves on a beautiful sunny day. If you find this artwork intriguing, check out the video of the making, it's less than 5 minutes long (the video, not the actual making of Wood Line) and can be found on Youtube.

Yelp
Peaceful, wood lined path amongst tall eucalyptus trees. The tall trees provided a shaded trail to walk on. Low key walking trail. Tip: park on Ligette Ave.

Yelp
This is a very cool piece of environmental art made out of trees. The artist used trees that had already been cut down (he did not cut them down), and he just moved them here (with help) and rearranged them so that they lined up in a zigzagging line. This is a beautiful, quiet area that really is not frequented by many tourists...all the people I came across here (3 people in an hour) were all people who lived in the area. If you want to enjoy art and enjoy nature in a calm space of San Francisco, this is a good place to do it.

Yelp
I'm surprised I never came here earlier. It's in the presidio so this whole area is beautiful. I love natural art installations. Park, pass the lovers trail, and then turn left before the road. You can't miss it! Walk through the whole thing! There's not much to say. It' just beautiful trees and beautiful nature.

Yelp
Beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The wood line looks the coolest at the top of the hill, but it also serves as a nice place to have a stroll under the beautiful trees or a photo op. Not very touristy here and parking (free) was relatively easy to find. The surrounding neighborhoods are very lovely here and well maintained. Great place to check out!

Yelp
I've seen photos of this winding trail, and not being a Pac Heights puppy, I had no idea where it was until I made an inadvertent detour from the absurdly named Lovers Lane, a concrete walkway that would hardly stir the loins of the romantically inclined. Anyway, the Wood Line is located in a narrow eucalyptus grove alongside Presidio Avenue. I thought it was just a nicely landscaped trail, but it's actually a public art installation by British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. The 1,200-foot trail is lined by felled tree trunks laid end-to-end to create a zigzagging pattern that appears almost endless on the wooded horizon. Well worth finding and taking a quick stroll. Yelp
Remove yourself from the city life and disconnect in the woods. The tree line offers a free and accessible exhibit in an art collection that is not only scattered throughout San Fransisco, but other parts of the globe! The tree line is within the Presidio and a good way to get your hike on! It's a literal line of trees that runs through a small forrest. Nearby are some parks and additional trails to walk through. It's free to the public, the only issue is finding parking, but there is plenty scattered around the presidio. Overall; A lush green exhibit that provides good places for portraits and a little way to unwind from the bustling city.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem at the Presidio ! This is definitely a place that people who enjoy a quick walk/hike should check out. There were so many things to see and enjoy from a nature perspective. There were a few warning signs for coyotes but otherwise nothing to fear at least at a first glance. There were huge eucalyptus trees and cypress trees in the area which reminded me of my time spent living in the Monterey Bay Area. The walking path was HUGE and clearly defined as this was an art installation that had been developed. There were a number of posting listed towards the bridge section of the walk which provided historical background on how this section of the Presidio had been developed. Definitely a place to visit as a local and to share with family/friends that visit the area.

Yelp
It's cold and windy even it's summer afternoon. Nice place to walk around and trying to balancing yourself on the wood stems.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful trail. It's not too long so great for kids and doing reflective walks at any point of the day. The neighborhood is beautiful as well. & if pictures are your thing, this place is definitely the spot

Yelp
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Pictures do not do it justice. It is an honor to have a Andy GOLDSWORTHY piece in SF. Amazing. Must see in person!o

Yelp
It is ok. It is a short trail near the street. Good place for a short walk. Too close to the street so I hear cars driving by all the time and no place to sit no table or bench.
google avatar

Yelp
Very beautiful and picture-worthy, it's definitely a place for Instagram and a nice stroll adjacent to the Lover's Lane path. To come here for just for Wood Line makes sense if you are looking for some specific photos but other than that it's very short so best to incorporate with a Presidio hike along Lovers Lane, nearby Lyon Stairs, or walk to Spire which is another one of Andy Goldworthy's pieces a little under a mile away.

Yelp
A slice of the forest right in the city. Navigating to this location and the surrounding trails is quite easy. During the winter there is ample parking close by - even for a large SUV like I was driving. It wasn't super close parking, but it was a short walk away from the area. To call this art to me is a tad odd. I just consider it a grand and beautiful forested area in the middle of the city. I'd equate it to Central Park but it is far too unique. We were there to do a photography shoot which this place is incredible for. Remember to pack your camera and a sweater. It gets chilly under the canopy of trees where the sub is mostly blocked. The early afternoon provided beautiful light and VERY low crowds.

Yelp
Located along Lovers' Lane in the Presidio, Wood Line is one of the four sculptures British site-specific artist Andy Goldsworthy created for the Presidio. Using eucalyptus branches from the Presidio, Goldsworthy created a literal line made of wood that stretches more than 1,200 feet on the floor of the forest. Over time, this sculpture will deteriorate so see it while it lasts.

Yelp
Andy Goldworthy's Wood Line has been on my "places to go" list for awhile now and I finally got to visit this beautiful piece of artwork during my date with my bf. Saturday evening, we were able to find street parking right before entering the Presidio. We walked in and found it very easily. Be warned that even in the middle of July, it was freezing because it was so windy! Make sure you layer up before you come. Shout-out to my bf; I WOOD never LEAF him because who else would patiently take a million photos to make sure I get that perfect IG photo?
google avatar

Kristin R.

Yelp
Does not disappoint and pictures don't do the wood line justice. After moving to the area, a friend practically begged me to put this at the top on.my list of places to see. I was skeptical... but soon found my self in an immersive experience unlike any other. See it for yourself!

Yelp
I was a little confused when planning my SF itinerary in distinguishing the difference between Lover's Lane and Andy Goldsworthy's Woodline in the Presidio, but after coming here I think the wood line is the the actual display of zigzagging lines, while Lover's Lane is a paved path that happens to run parallel to the wood line. The wood line is a simple but gorgeous work of art. I'm not an artsy guy by any means but the seeing the display in the middle of the abundant towering trees with the sunlight peaking through makes for quite a view (or IG pic). Great place for a photoshoot!

Yelp
Last year, my girlfriend and I spent part of our anniversary strolling around the Presidio in San Francisco. If any of y'all have been here before, you know that this 1,500 acre park is absolutely GORGEOUS! From interesting artwork to romantic trails, the Presidio is worth every second of your time. And when you are at the Presidio, you HAVE to check out Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line. Unfortunately for us, we didn't take the time to explore this art piece during our first visit to the park. But, I made a promise that we'd come back. Fast forward to 2018 and there we were...right in the middle of something so transcendent that words could only do so much to chronicle our experience. You definitely need to see the Wood Line for yourself. As some of you may be able to guess from the name, the Wood Line is essentially a very, very, VERY, long piece of wood that Andy Goldsworthy created. According to the Interwebs (goldsworthy.cc.gla.ac.uk), Goldsworthy likes to create artworks using the nature around him. The Wood Line is part of several separate installations in the Presidio. Gorgeous. Awe-inspiring. Interactive. If I had to try and come up with three words to describe Goldsworthy's Wood Line, it would be these. First, the Wood Line was unquestionably gorgeous. Even during the winter, the trees here were blooming with life, the grass was lush-green, and the perfect amount of sunlight shone through. Second, the line was awe-inspiring. The sheer size and shape (it's a FREAKING ZIG ZAG) of this art piece literally made us step back and ponder our existence. Like, the Wood Line seemingly went on forever! It was one of those things in the world we didn't quite understand, but still felt in awe about. And third, this art piece was interactive! Unlike with most installations, people of all ages were welcome to touch and even walk on top of the Wood Line. It pretty much took us on a journey through the Presidio. The Wood Line is located on the southeastern part of the Presidio near Presidio Blvd. If you want direct access to the art piece, parking may be a bit tight. However, there are potentially some residential spots nearby along Clark Street, Sibley Road, and Liggett Avenue. Personally, I recommend parking further south like near the Richmond District and just hiking up. Exercise for days! If the Presidio is a cake, Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line has to be the cherry on top. Whether you love art, nature, or the synthesis of the two, the Wood Line offers something beautiful for everyone. I give this art installation an "Omg, I'd travel 2 hours" for this rating. I'll definitely come back to check out the other pieces! Have fun and prosper,

Yelp
The second artwork of Andy Goldsworthy in the Presidio was commissioned in 2010. Located in the Lover's Lane footpath along the 100 year old Eucalyptus Grove planted by the US Army, the piece consist of eucalyptus branches laid on the ground connected to different branches that weaves through the grove like a snake slithering in the forest. The artwork looks like it may have been there since the Presidio was under Spanish occupation when it was called El Presidio Real de San Francisco. (Translated: The Royal Fortress of Saint Francis) I like the former better compared to the latter. It just flows from the tongue like Don Juan DeMarco talking romantically to the ladies. It blends it quite nicely with the surroundings and there's a piece of Zen and tranquility when visiting the area. Although it's surrounded by concrete jungle, this little patch of nature feels like a sanctuary for the soul and spirit that revives the mind as you walk through its land and feel everything around you. Stop Look Listen Feel The place will speak to you if you ask the right question.

Yelp
This is a beautiful little tree artwork located on the lovers lane trail. It's not as long as it appears, probably a half mile in length. It's a beautiful spot to take photos! Just search Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line on google maps and you'll find it. There is free 2hr parking at Liggett Circle nearby. No nearby bathrooms. Dog friendly!

Yelp
We've been hearing about this and it's in social media. We're excited to see this Wood line even though this is not a famous attraction. The people were telling that this is a must see. It was enticing to see from the pictures and video. It didn't disappoint us. I must say say it's really nice.
google avatar

Sam C.

Yelp
I mean, any nature spot is wonderful, I'm only giving it not-full-stars so you don't expect something grand or like a full-day adventure. It's a relatively short trail but the wood line does look cool with its snakey path and you're surrounded by trees so you can't go wrong. It's just short. But great for a walk or a time-passer between events on a date or work break!

Yelp
Visitors to The Presidio in San Francisco have a couple of wonderful opportunities to see beautiful public sculpture by acclaimed Brittish artist Andy Goldsworthy. While one of his other pieces, Spire, may be better known (it certainly stands out a bit more) he is also responsible for Wood Line. This piece of public art is located on the southeast corner of The Presidio and runs parallel to Lover's Lane. The art itself is a snaking line cut through the forest using natural logs. It may not seem all that impressive at first, but the curves seem natural as it twists through the woods, and the shear scale is impressive as you can walk down this path for a good ten to fifteen minutes. Up close, you may not think it all is that special, but as you get perspective, particularly looking back up the path from a lower elevation, it comes together. If the sculpture itself isn't enough, the setting is also gorgeous, located in a grove of Eucalyptus Trees that is designated as a historic forest. The canopy is high above, and the nature of the vegetation lets in plenty of light but still presents the feel of being surrounded by nature. Goldsworthy is an interesting artist with an interesting background. His sculpture blurs the line between nature and man-made. You'll find a few other pieces of his work through-out the Bay Area including the aforementioned Spire in The Presidio, as well as Drawn Stone, which is at the entrance of the De Young Museum. He also has a piece at Stanford University.

Yelp
The Wood Line is more than 1,200 feet in length. While I was there, I felt like I was transported elsewhere away from the city. It's a great place to take some pictures. The Wood Line is within the Presidio and is parallel to Lovers' Lane.
google avatar

Annie T.

Yelp
I lived in the city for 10 years and had never seen Wood Line until recently. If there was a list of Must-See places in SF, this would be on the 2nd list. Don't get me wrong, it is so cool, but what-you-see-is-what-you-get: the artwork is a bunch of tree trunks laid down in a zig zag pattern in the woods. It's great for some photos, but there isn't much else you can do here. The 2 times I've been here, I've only seen joggers and photographers. So if you're visiting SF and you've done everything on your Must See list, then come here! Tip: There isn't much parking, so you'll have more luck if you come in the morning than later in the day.
google avatar

Joanna L.

Yelp
Short distance from the Presidio Blvd entrance gate, also near Lyon Street Steps. Park on the street and then walk about 5 minutes into the Presidio. The woodline lasts for about a 2 minute walk. Cool place to take photos. Then you can explore the rest of the Presidio. YEE! *Note- this is different than the Spire by Andy Goldsworthy. That structure is closer to the Arguello Street entrance.
google avatar

Kate L.

Yelp
This is such a popular place for dates, strolls, and photographs that you'll never find solitude. However, if you don't mind sharing nature, this is one of the prettiest spots in the Presidio. Much better than walking up Lovers Lane!
google avatar

Dago S.

Yelp
My 4 year old loves to be outside and explore. While exploring the presidio we had to come to check this place out. It was nice outside and we walked the line. My daughter was able to see different birds and learn more about the animals in the area since we got the presidio explorer backpack. We sat on the log for a break to eat and spent a good time together. If your in the area and like nature you should def check this out. Bring comfortable shoes since youll be walking alot and want to explore more of the surroundings. A snack would help because its a beautiful place to stop, eat and take pictures
google avatar

Yelp
If you want a photo op, this is the place to be. A good short distance for walking with a nice view as well. Take your camera
google avatar

Yelp
Located alongside Lovers' Lane in The Presidio. Presidio and Pacific. I learned about Andy Goldsworthy in an Art History class.. how nature is his medium. You can walk along the snaking tree on the ground amongst the eucalyptus trees.. You can look at it from the paved path of Lovers' Lane.. I think I appreciate it more having been exposed to Andy Goldsworthy.. but nonetheless, it's art made of nature in nature and this is only one of the installations by Andy Goldsworthy in the Presidio.

Yelp
Awesome place to stop if you're nearby. It's impressive in person and would probably look better in pictures on a cloudy day as the sun and trees create so many shadows. Truly a great find! We parked in the nearby neighborhood and walked down to the forest area.

Field Of M.

Yelp
This place is breathtaking, I call it the hidden gem of the BUSY, CROWDED, AND STUFFY San Francisco. Seriously, the moment you see this place peak at the end of the road and when you first drive into it out of the busy roads of SF, it's really like it transport you into a different world, quiet, peaceful, and even the air is different. I loved this place and will probably be the only reason I ever make the drive to SF again. A lot of people confuses this path with "lover's lane" and it's understandable why people would confuse it, but this path is "parallel" to Lover's lane, it's literally a walk into the forest area on the side of lover's lane. I almost missed it. Finding a parking here is another hard part, it's very close by to a residential area--PLEASE don't be rude and park in other people's space, there are two parking areas you can freely park at close by to the path, one is a bit down hill (A small 3 hour parking area) and one that is more down towards the end of the lover's lane path. Aside from it all, I love this little walk way, my husband and i took our 3 years anniversary photos here...and we will come back!
google avatar

Jboogie L.

Yelp
It was a bit tricky to find but if you walk up Lover's lane trail, you can find it. I like this tranquil place. It's a bit short trail
google avatar

Yelp
I couldn't have asked for a better setting for proposing to my girlfriend. She said yes and now Lover's Lane/Wood Line will always be a special place for us.

Yelp
Beautiful art installation in the presidio! Definitely worth checking out, makes for some beautiful scenery for photographs for a special occasion or just because.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
It was really windy/cold/cloudy the day we went, but the wood line was still really cool to see! There weren't too many people there, so I got to take some nice pictures.
google avatar

Yelp
Wood Line is a very cool sculpture in the Presidio! It is located in the southeast corner of the park in a eucalyptus grove near Lover's Lane. Kudos to Andy Goldsworthy for his whimsical contribution to the Presidio!
google avatar

Laramae E.

Yelp
Lover's Lane! Lover's Lane! You can find Andy Goldsworthy's wood line in Presidio. It's basically laid eucalyptus branches on the ground flowing. It's pretty interesting and it's one of my favorite places we checked out in SF. So many trees! So much shade! Great place to go with your significant other. Must see when you're in the area! Great job, Goldsworthy!
google avatar

Kari G.

Yelp
The wood line is an iconic part of San Francisco. I've always seen photos of it so I set off to find the mysterious wood line. It was surprisingly easy to find. It's located right at the Presidio and Pacific entrance to the Presidio park area. We parked along the side of the road on Pacific and walked up to the Lovers Lane trail. The wood line is a long curvy line of logs connected together underneath a Eucalyptus Grove that's over 100 years old. Its an absolutely gorgeous path to walk.

Andrew C.

Yelp
Beautiful hike, street parking available, walking shoes - ok, easy and kind of short but there is plenty of other stuff to see in the area.
google avatar

Kasie G.

Yelp
This is a beautiful short walk nestled in the Presidio. You can find parking a short distance away in the adjacent neighborhood, or make it a longer walk and park closer to the Presidio hotel and museum.

Yelp
Hmm.. what a hidden gem. I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere but really I was just in the Presidio. Of all places to feel like you're lost in the woods. Loved every minute spent here :) Andy Goldsworthy is awesome!! Thank you for this!!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome place to walk around, take an Instagram photo lol, and bring your pets. Dogs seem to really like the soil here for some reason.
google avatar

gretl g.

Yelp
Excellent walk through the Presidio to see Goldworthy's installations. A must see!

Ted Q.

Yelp
Line of Trees... ...in Respose It looks like somebody laid out a line of downed and stripped trees on the ground, which is precisely what it is. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a look. It isn't a "Wow!" sort of thing, but it is pretty cool. Note: it runs parallel with and very close to Lovers Lane.
google avatar

Mari S.

Yelp
This was a cute little spot to relax. We just had to take in the wonderful eucalyptus scents. We found parking easily when we came on a Mon afternoon. It truly is a hidden gem there wasn't anyone when we visited.

Yelp
Great place to start your hike and walk towards the water wandering through the entire park complex. An amazing way to spend a day in San Francisco.

Yelp
So cool. Unique. Fun to walk on the wood. Come with your loved ones. Talk about life. Appreciate trees.
