It's a very tranquil setting, and you can clearly see why people want to stay to escape for a while. We were given a tour by an extremely friendly nun, who also told us a history of the monastery, with sparks of great humour. The gardens are lovely, and there are great views of the lake. Hopefully it remains for many years to come.

St. Mark's Abbey, a community of Anglican Benedictine monks and nuns, in Camperdown is one of the hidden gems of Victoria. This abbey sits atop the rim of Lake Bullen Meri, offers magnificent views of the lake and Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf. The community has a comfortable guest house too, and it's perfect for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just ring ahead to book a room.

Just a heads up, to maybe good to make arrangements with the abbey before turning up. We drove up, rang the doorbell and looked into the camera as instructed and waited, and waited - and waited. Rang the bell again and repeat of waiting. Then walked around to print shop where there was another bell on the door so rang that too with same non response so then tried to call the number on the door but it just rang and rang out before finally going to voicemail. After forty minutes of this we just gave up and left. Not a soul to be seen. We were there in the suggested hours between 9.30 - 11.30am and on a weekday so no idea what happened. It was disappointing so passing this on to avoid anyone else experiencing this. It is in a beautiful location with spectacular views. Oh well.

I had a beautiful experience at St Mark's Abbey and I will definitely be back again! The hospitality I experienced during my stay was heavenly. Praise God for Sister Raphael and Dom, they're both saints!
