The Annabelle was the first five-star resort that opened in Cyprus back in the 80’s and is considered the ‘grand dame’ of Paphos – a venerable Cyprus institution. The hotel had been on our shortlist for a while. After having stayed in the Blue Palace Elounda Crete and the Lindos Blu Rhodes just recently we decided to give the Annabelle a try. Here’s our review:||Location/Beach: Directly at the seafront and next to the bustling harbour, with many shops, cafes, and restaurants close by. Surely a convenient location but there can be noise from the town, especially on weekends. There is no ‘beach’ in front of the hotel but easy access to the water. Alternatively, Antasia Beach Club is just a short walk away and next to a nice, sandy beach (note there is a charge for sunbeds, a sun umbrella, and towels; reservations should be made in advance).||Service Team: The heart and soul of Annabelle, the staff in all areas of the hotel were friendly, helpful, and efficient. Whether it was the reception desk, restaurant and pool staff or the room service team, nothing was too much trouble.||Restaurants/Dine Around: The hotel offers a great choice of restaurants – Ouranos, the new rooftop restaurant, was our favorite, with brilliant food, wonderful views, and relaxed live music. Amorosa – fine dining right at the pool - came in as a close second, while the Italian Meditteraneo down at the promenade was more casual. We also enjoyed our dinner and sunset at Antasia Beach Club. The half board (dine around) offer gives you the chance to experience all restaurants on a rotating basis, plus the ones at the sister-hotel Almyra next door (Mosaics offered nice buffets; and Notios, with Japanese-Med fusion, was another interesting option). We loved the concept.||The breakfast buffet was extensive but nothing special; we would have liked to see some ‘daily specials’ served at the table. On most of the days things were very busy, with the usual rush for tables on the outside terrace – but staff handled it well. We never had to wait more than five minutes to be seated.||Pools/Sunbeds: Three nice pools in landscaped gardens (plus another stunning indoor pool on the fourth floor next to the spa), all with plenty of sunbeds and space. The hotel was fully booked but it didn’t feel crowded around the pools. There are also sunbeds right at the promenade; these were shared with non-residents from outside who had to pay a charge.||Rooms: By today’s standards, the rooms are a bit small for a five-star hotel (an average of 28-30qm), but they are well-furnished and nicely decorated. The views of the sea and towards the harbour are wonderful, especially from the top floor rooms. Internet and air condition worked very well. Bathrobes and towels were of high quality, and the Acqua di Parma toiletries are a lovely touch. Towels were usually changed twice per day - many hotels nowadays opt to change them on request, as this saves both water and energy. We were surprised that Annabelle had not implemented a similar policy.||Finally: The cats were lovely - well taken care of by hotel staff, properly injected etc and treated with respect. At times they seemed to ‘own’ the hotel. We loved them.||So… the Annabelle combines old world charm with Mediterranean elegance; it is a superbly managed, luxury hotel with elaborate dining options and attentive service. Especially the front desk staff was brilliant (special thanks to Marina and Christina). We truly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return. Thank you for a great stay!
