6 Gorgeous Lodges to Visit on a Road Trip Through New Zealand

"A handful of the accommodation options at Annandale suit families or groups of friends, but for couples, the Seascape suite is a must. Take in the views of a private bay from the outdoor spa pool, or from inside the glass-front room. Meals will be prepared by the chef and delivered to your villa for you to serve yourself, further protecting your privacy." - Gwen McClure Gwen McClure Gwen McClure is an American journalist who’s lived in and written about Auckland, New Zealand since 2016. "Annandale Four private villas, including a historic homestead, are spread across a 4,000-acre coastal farm. The landscape undulates between bays and the Southern Alps an hour and a half from Christchurch on New Zealand ’s majestic South Island. Each property showcases unique design elements: Scrubby Bay’s living room is outfitted in Missoni Home, while the 12-person Homestead has a bathroom decked out in Boffi. Other furniture pieces, crockery, and works of art were made by New Zealand craftspeople. Most rugs were spun from the property’s own sheep wool. On top of the comforts and thoughtful aesthetic, the best part about Annandale is its remoteness. Guests are immersed in a farm experience that puts them in touch with the seasons, whether sheep and cows are lambing and calving in spring, or the surrounding mountains are glistening with winter snow. Accommodations come with ample verandas so guests can take in the scenery and slow down to appreciate the surprises hidden around every corner. The original stables have been converted into a beautiful loft, and a secret stairway in the Homestead travels between one of the bedrooms and the butler’s pantry."

An absolutely amazing stay at seascape, the view continued to take our breath away for the entirety of the 2 days. It felt like you were sleeping on the beach but with the most extraordinary of comforts. We highly recommend as a once in a lifetime opportunity! We hope to return one day!

We stayed for three beautiful days and nights at Annandale and I can honestly say that it was the best travel experience I've ever had. Caroline was absolutely lovely and took care of our every need. The lodging was luxurious and SO comfortable. We loved the fireplaces and spa pool. The first two nights we stayed in the Villa and the third night in the Shepherd's Cottage. Both locations were incredible in their own way. Gourmet meals from Chef Ryan were out of this world in creativity and flavor. We felt completely pampered and can't wait to return!

This place is a 10/10. We stayed at the Shepard’s Cottage for our honeymoon, and it was everything we dreamed of and more. The meals were excellent, the location was private with incredible views, it was just overall an exceptional experience. Also, I absolutely have to mention Caroline from Guest Services. She was incredibly kind, professional, and warm. She made us feel right at home as soon as we arrived. Thank you!!

Really stunning property and welcoming staff! We stayed in the Shepherd's Cottage, which made for a cozy, moody stay. Shepherd's Cottage is a bit more rustic than most luxury villas (but with high-end linens and an updated shower, etc) as it's original to the farm (dates back to 1860s or so). Very charming and unique and perfect, if you love that vibe, as we do. This is one of the few spots in NZ, particularly Pigeon Bay, that's extremely remote and private but with all the food and amenities of a luxury property. Our villa was about 20 min by car from check-in and from other villas; and it's important to be aware that you can't drive on the property yourself--staff will bring you in and out via the Annandale vehicles. We had a really fantastic time here--a welcome basket with loads of delicious snacks was waiting when we arrived, along with a complementary bottle of champagne (to celebrate our marriage/honeymoon). We were late putting together our trip itinerary and failed to book activities in advance, but our guide (Caroline) was extremely accommodating and was able to arrange a lovely farm tour and clay target shooting on short notice. Between the delivered meals and the welcome basket and cheese plate, we had more food options than we could handle! The weather was a bit gloomy while we were there, but we kept a constant fire going in the fireplace and it only added to the cozy atmosphere. There are no adequate words to describe the property itself--its beauty is unreal.

My partner and I spent 3 nights at Shepherd's cottage in April and it was a lovely stay. ||||The cottage is set in seclusion with views over the bay and animals roaming the grounds and is the perfect place to relax away from city life. ||||The house is self contained with all the amenities you are likely to need for a couple of days away. The food is delivered each day and is restaurant quality, easy to prepare and also showcases some lovely local produce (including what we were told were vegetables grown in their own garden). My only negative around the food was that I did mention that I did not like fish and we got salmon on the first night so make sure you are clear about your dietary requirements, in particular if you have allergies). ||||The house itself is rustic and feels warm and cosy when you enter. We were generally very comfortable throughout our stay and had a great night sleep each night we were there however the lounge in sitting room is need of an upgrade. We found it very hard to sit there comfortably for a period of time and as you are likely to be in the house for a lot of your stay (as there is nowhere to go!) this was a bit disappointing. The house has books and games and also has wifi which was handy ||||The grounds around the house are great for walks, though it was hard to decipher where the walking tracks were from the maps provided. We ended up just walking along the road and then stumbled across one which went in the direction we wanted to go. It's great to see all the cows and sheep but it's also probably a good idea to keep an eye out and make sure you don't end up with the bulls. ||||The views from the Shepherd's cottage are absolutely stunning and looking out into the night sky was one of the highlights of our stay. A great place to unwind and relax for a few days

I recently had the most incredible stay at the Seascape Villa in Annandale, and I'm still floating on cloud nine! This place is like a slice of heaven tucked away in the beautiful coastal region of New Zealand.||||Let me start by saying that the folks at Annandale are absolute rockstars when it comes to hospitality. They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like a VIP from the moment I arrived. Their genuine care and attention to detail blew me away, and I couldn't have asked for better service.||||Now, let's talk about the villa itself. Holy moly, it's a jaw-dropper! The architecture seamlessly blends with the surrounding nature, and the views are straight out of a postcard. I couldn't get enough of gazing at the endless ocean from the comfort of my plush bed.

We arrived at a place that made promises, but in practice it is suitable for a short impression and not for tourist accommodation. Certainly not worthy of the high price we paid for it. Let's start with the distance and the inability to freely leave the place, you are isolated. There is no cover on the glass windows and they rise with first light. The difficult problem is with the food, everything is prepared in trays with instructions for heating and at a cost of over $3000. You are actually your own chef with cold, tasteless food and with a staff that does not know how to guide you on how to operate the devices at home. We asked for a certain diet and twice they made a mistake and gave us foods that we do not eat . They say that there is a reception that works 24/7, in fact at 19:00 they no longer answer, the WIFI system crashes and then there is also no way to call to watch TV and more. The staff who are two women do not inform that it is possible to go out by calling a ride and they come to pick up. In the shower there is a small mirror that was purchased at the last minute and you cannot shave or apply makeup.|The scenery in New Zealand is stunning and free, for the price we paid we got nothing and ran away and didn't stay the last night. Those who are interested in total solitude, or want to see interesting architectural buildings, can visit here, but not for more than a day, and should stock up on food.

My family and I had the pleasure of staying at the Homestead. It is utterly amazing. This was the most special family vacation we have ever experienced. The home and gardens are utterly incredible. We stayed for two nights and didn't want to leave. Our young children were as enchanted as we were by the magnificent gardens. In a lifetime of travel, this is the most spectacular place I have ever seen. Every luxury and detail was available. The gym and pool are amazing. The gym has top quality Life Fitness machines. The food is the best and all of it is organic and delicious. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed a cooking class with a teriffic world class chef. The staff went above and beyond to cater to our every need. The scenery and views are breathtaking. This is an absolute jewel and we are already contemplating a return visit.
