A 12-Stop Road Trip of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Most Surprising Designs

"Frank Lloyd Wright was often known for his nature-inspired, humanistic works of architecture, but while his design for Milwaukee’s Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church certainly retains some natural curves, it looks completely alien. Wright was inspired by Greek Orthodox symbology in his design for the church, incorporating the symbols into the structure itself. The body of the church is a shallow, rounded dome that echoes the domes found in Greek Orthodox chapels, all supported by a quartet of support struts that form the simple Greek Orthodox cross. The Greek Orthodox Cross is again incorporated in a number of the smaller details such as designs on some of the interior features and cutouts on the exterior. The interior of the saucer chapel mirrors the exterior shape and is illuminated all around the rim of the ceiling and by the semi-circular windows that run the circumference of the space. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church was designed just a few years prior to Wright’s death in 1959 and was not actually finished until after he passed away. The church, while extremely modern, is almost all circles and soft curves which was clearly Wright’s intention. Yet the finished product does look, more than anything, like a UFO. What Wright would think of this alien reading of his work is unknown, but we can pray that he would find it as delightful as everyone else." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Absolutely stunning. I came here as an architecture student and was absolutely in awe it was unlike anything I’ve ever seen words and pictures don’t do wrights work justice. All the staff were absolutely amazing but I would definitely check to make sure it is open to the public on any particular day I went for an event that was going. If you get the chance definitely visit it was beautiful.

I went on a tour of Annunciation during the holidays and had a wonderful time. The breathtakingly beautiful building speaks for itself, but I really want to express how much I enjoyed receiving the tour from Perry. His personal and family history with the church go way back, and that was very clear in the stories he told us. It was a great reminder that this is more than just a stunning piece of architecture, but a home for a community.

the leader of this church was very passionate at one point leading me from Lutheran to Orthodox however he was infected by greed and money he no long works for Pompous who is our father whos most precious son was Yeshua which the holy divine spirits Micheal Gabriel and Rafael protected and the cornerstone the holy Theotokos Psalm 117 Put your faith and trust in our Father who is the creator of the heavens and earth do not trust man

Have you ever attended a Greek Orthodox Service during the Easter Season? Holy Friday is remarkable for the reason that the hymns sung during this service chronicle the life, crucifixion and death of Jesus. The melodies are captivating and if I may, a shout out to Alexis Krenitsy Ganos, choir director who skillfully manipulates the beautiful voices within the very Byzantine chanting. The melodies this evening were the ones I grew up with and remind me of the time there were no seats to be had in this amphitheater like place of worship. God is here. Please attend our Easter Pascha midnight service… so much beauty and pageantry but faith filled, Biblical, ancient yet up to date. Tonight we passed beneath the Epitaphion, the cloth on which the body of Christ is depicted. We die with him but as we pass beneath, we emerge victorious and see a glimpse of Heaven. Please join us.

Tradition at this parish is something that keeps generations engaged with knowing how faith in our Heavenly Father makes the difference in life. That is what is the firm foundation that keeps the members focused, and provides hope in their daily lives. Please come and join them as they share the Good News of salvation.🙏

The architecture is amazingly breathtaking. Frank Lloyd Wright's attention to detail is just amazing to see in person. It's definitely worth a visit to partake in the self-guided tour, even if you're not religious or spiritual.

Google
Unique architecture. I study the design and art work for churches in different cities and I have to admit this one is very unique. The curves and the reflections are very well designed. Located in an open area that makes it easy to spot the church from different angles. I didn't have a chance to go inside since it was closed. But I hope people discover peace and beauty at this place.

Yelp
Beautiful church, large compound surrounded the church. I went there after church service, everyone was busy mingling with one another, no one cares about me, so I decided to take some photos and left. Will comeback again soon.

Yelp
Beautiful church - both inside & outside. Go during Taste of Greece and you'll get a history of the church, which is nice.

Yelp
Visited during Doors Open Milwaukee 2016, and it was awesome to do a visit here. Didn't bother me that it was the most out of the way place I visited for sure during this year's DOM event(and barely before the last bus stop of the #57 Milwaukee County bus route), since I love visiting ANY Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. If you've ever been to Unity Temple in Oak Park, IL, this will feel a little more open inside vs. the sanctuary of Unity. They both are great structures in their own ways, though. The pastors and other church people were very nice in explaining the history of this place, and I enjoyed seeing the decorations(i.e. vertical lights in the middle of the stairways, stained glass windows on the balcony) inside this church. Definitely a must visit, if you're in the Milwaukee area and are an architecture buff. Photos are definitely permitted inside this building, btw. I have no idea what hours and days they're open to the public regularly, but I imagine if you called the church up, they'd probably tell you their public hours. I'd bet the church's building will be open for next year's Doors Open Milwaukee(September 16-17, 2017), and for other church fests as well.

Yelp
"Greek Hospitality" Obviously the Church is beautiful and a landmark. It is also a beautiful Divine Liturgy (normally at 9:30am). We decided to stay for the 'coffee hour'. It is in the fellowship hall/gym - the curved wood ceiling is more interesting than any gymnasium I've seen. Good coffee though they ran our a bit early. We felt very welcome - Emanuel was especially fun to talk with.

Yelp
When I lived in Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, I used to drive past this church on a regular basis. I loved it then, and I miss it now. I've only been inside only once, and - honestly - cannot remember what it looked like in there! However, the outside is so cool that it doesn' t really matter!

Yelp
Masterpiece. We circled the building and peeked in a few Windows. It is really a work of art!

Yelp
Considering how batty this town is about the Calatrava, you'd think more people would mention this wonderfully insane structure by a guy named Frank Lloyd something or other.
