12 Best Places for Shopping in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"For more than 150 years, Antigua Casa Crespo has been shoeing Madrid's masses with hand-sewn espadrilles, the comfy and colorful sandals that never go out of style with the bohemian set. Unlike the imitations you'll find in chain stores, these versions are made locally according to a centuries-old technique. You'll find rope-soled alpargatas in every hue and style—from high-heeled lace-ups to classic canvas-topped flats—plus esparto baskets and other artisan-made crafts. Opt for the mesh wedge-heel sandals with metallic silver straps, which look as stunning paired with a cocktail dress as they do with worn-in jeans." - Benjamin Kemper

I didn't know Spain is famous for espadrilles but realize this when I am at Madrid. The lady speaks simple english so we can communicate. The espadrilles were made nicely and comfortable. can't wait to wear them in summer!

I am always into supporting small and family business but this place is absurd. I bought there espandrillas one time and they got broken after two months of wearing. Okay I gave them another chance, the same thing happened. I brought both shoes to them and confronted the lady with the situation. Suddenly she stopped understanding English, secondly she said why I brought them to her and it’s not their shoes unless pointed at the same shoes in the shelves. Then she sent me to a shoe maker while I wanted her to repair them. I would understand if these were cheap 5-eur-espandrillas but they are not, they claim they are better and more sustainable. Even in a such a situation she could just offer a shoe (only one was broken) to improve the situation. I would not advise anybody buying there: low quality and overpriced for that. P.S. also the first pair was bought at your shop, you may don’t have them now, but I have receipts etc and also with the other pair the person at the shop only agreed that they are yours after I pointed at the same pair of shoes in the shelves. Neither your quality nor your service (and yes the service belongs to a a good business) are at par with what you claim. As I pointed in the previous post you can solve such a situation a smart way, but you don’t because you don’t want a repeat business. You continue baselessly claim the highest quality of your products which is not. Again I would really discourage everybody buying there.

Wonderful family owned business with a huge floor to ceiling collection of espadrilles packed into a tiny shop. The prices are amazing for the quality of the shoes & they're unbelievably comfortable. Bought one pair for myself & one for a friend -- can't wait to get more the next time I'm in Madrid.

An amazing place the owner was super friendly and helped me find the perfect pair of espadrilles! I've been wearing them ever since they are super light and fresh!

Classic, handmade Espadrilles, prices are mid range and so goes for the diversity of models. The lady was a bit on the impatient side of things first and she kind of tried to push us to decide and buy quickly. But I guess she opened up later when she realized we have genuine curiosity in understanding the effort put by artisans to create the espadrilles and in which part of Spain are they made.

Yelp
I love espadrilles, so I absolutely had to buy a few pairs while in Spain. This shop is located in a nice, cute neighborhood and I almost walked by it and missed it. The store itself is small, but luckily we were the only ones there at the time. For some of the basic espadrilles, they didn't have my size which is a US women's size 6 or 36 EU. However, there was still a good selection of other styles for me to choose from. The employee assisting me was very patient and helpful. She checked to see how the fit was and let me know that the shoe stretches. We communicated fine even though she didn't speak English and I don't really know Spanish. I bought 2 pairs and thought the pricing was reasonable. I would certainly have bought more if I had room in my suitcase hah.

Yelp
Cute little espadrille shop with a really friendly woman who helped me find the best size for me. There were a few styles I liked but I only left with one shoe--I figured I can always call and order more if they work out. They felt really comfy on and after a 0.5 mile walk in the new shoes, no chaffing at all. Happy with this purchase.

Yelp
Omg! Show addict here! Had a great time shopping here with my family. Bought 3 pairs of shoes. The owner has been working here forever and his father (appears) to be the one who opened or maybe grandfather. Pardon me as my Spanish isn't the best and was trying to understand the shop owner. Anywhoooo we came at 515 pm on a Friday as the yelp site says they're open at 5 and kept searching for it but thought it was closed but it was just siesta til 515 pm!!! He may have heard us from the inside and then opened the door and we were able to shop til we dropped! Loved it!!

Yelp
Walked in here because I happened to walk by and was in the market for alpargatas and ended up conversing with the wonderful owner for 30 minutes and getting two pairs. They have a great variety of styles. His family has been making them for 4 generations and I can't imagine going anywhere else next time I'm in Madrid.

Yelp
This store is located in an area full of little stylish stores, and this has been the store many Spanish royals pick their espadrilles. It is a very down-to-earth place, and you can see the owner sitting next to you making pairs of espadrilles. They have lots of classic styles, and the prices are so reasonable (less than 10 euros to about 20 for cotton espadrilles, and about 30-50 for leather ones). Choices may not be as stylish as the ones you see around Plaza Mayor, but you know exactly where your product is made. Oh... and did I say that this store has been opened for decades?

Yelp
Please don't buy overpriced espadrilles from department stores or cheap shoes from souvenir stands when you can buy the real deal from this shop. It can be intimidating to go into small stores like these but the shopkeepers are extremely patient and helpful.

Yelp
Excellent experience at this lovely shop! I speak basic to intermediate Spanish and my husband speaks minimal and we still enjoyed conversing with the pleasant owners. And of course,we loved loved loved their selection of shoes. The shop is not to be missed when in Madrid . Take note it is cash only and hard to decide on just one pair :)
