Antique Inn Sumiyoshi

We have traveled to so many countries and stayed at so many homestays, hotels, bed and breakfast - you name it. This place, however, was one of the best - if not THE BEST - place we have ever stayed at - WORLDWIDE! such a friendly atmosphere there. The food is simply AMAZING!! the views are mind-blowing. The hosts are extremely friendly and go above and beyond to make your stay the best ever and as authentic as it can get. This is exactly what we had wished for during our Japan trip. It was simply great and madr our trip to Japan. The elderly man, his wife and their son as well as the whole staff was exceptional. ARIGATO! THANK YOU SO MUCH! PS: the onsen with views to the river (and the second one as well) is simply true bliss. Great!!!!!

I felt so privileged to have been able to stay at Sumiyoshi guest house. Staying here is a totally wonderful experience you will savour forever. Amazing in every way. So accommodating for vegetarian food. The beautiful staff and owners will make you feel humble.

We loved our stay here! Our favorite part were the owners and staff, all of whom were incredibly friendly, considerate, and generous. Our welcome included matcha tea and a cookie, and then we were shown around the lovely home. Our room was comfortable, coach, and had a beautiful view. The antiques throughout the building and rooms added so much character and interest. The onsen was a great addition, and could be locked for private use. The meals were absolutely outstanding- best of our trip! My husband and I are vegetarian and they were so kind to accommodate the meals for us. The location is perfect for exploring the morning markets or visiting the old town. We had the best time and sincerely can’t wait to return again.

The best experience I had in Japan was just discovering and staying in this typical Ryokan in Takayama. I stayed there with my partner last year in April. It is basically a private residence of a Japanese family that accommodates a few guests. The residence is located in a great location right next to the river ,in the center and beating heart of the town above whose banks a really very typical and authentic daily market is set up, just like the atmosphere you can feel in the Ryokan. The room was really very spacious and the whole residence is furnished with furniture and antiques belonging to the family and handed down for generations. There are also some private Onsen in the facility that can be locked and reserved for guests. Included in the price was also dinner and breakfast , amazing, plentiful, of exceptional quality and carefully prepared by the family. Last but not least, I would like to mention the elderly gentlemen couple of the family, of unique sweetness who always welcomed us and served our meals. Sumiyoshi Ryokan is a traditional and warm place. The rooms come with a private toilet, but you need to leave the room to take a bath, good view, can see the review from the room. Although the room is a bit small, it doesn't affect our enjoyment of the inn. The grandparents are very hospitable, even though communication was a bit difficult for us. However, they still tried their best to help us understand. We booked breakfast and dinner, and the food was very delicious. The ryokan is close to the Miyagawa Morning Market, just a 5-minute walk away, and the Takayama Old Town is a 10-minute walk. The location is very convenient.

Loved my 2 nights stay at the Antique Inn Sumiyoshi. The hosts were all very kind and the inn is beautiful and ideally located! Thank you for having us and your amazing hospitality. The japanese breakfast was also great 👌 The only negative point was having loud english-speaking neighbourgs that we could hear talking at 3am and then making loud noises (sliding doors relentlessly and running a marathon(loud steps) in a small room at 5am (and no they were not checking out early).

Such a cool and unique experience! The place is run by such a nice older couple, and you really feel you’re experiencing true Japanese culture. Food was amazing, the rooms were so cool, and the hospitality was second to none. Definitely will stand out as a highlight of our trip!

Lovely stay with fantastic and caring hosts. They were so welcoming and happy to chat. Loved breakfasts and the warm bath. Highly recommend for groups and couples. I stayed with a group of all girls and we felt safe and comfortable.
