Stepping back in Time!!
On November 21, 2025, our group of thirteen, travelling with "Flamingo Lanka" visited the renowned Archaeological Museum in Anuradhapura, considered one of oldest museums in Sri Lanka.
The museum features an extensive collection of artifacts unearthed from excavations in Anuradhapura and other historical sites across the country. Its two-storey layout showcases Buddhist statues, Hindu deities, intricate engravings and carvings, architectural fragments, and everyday utensils. Larger architectural ruins are displayed around the corridor of the ground floor. Other items on display at the museum include jewellery, coins, stone tools, pottery, ceramics and a detailed model of Abhayagiri Stupa.
The museum basically provides an insight into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, spanning from the pre-Christian era to the colonial period. The experience was both fascinating and educational offering a deeper understanding of ancient Anuradhapura and a glimpse into the lives of early inhabitants of the island.
Although photography is not permitted within the museum, I thank the managers for permitting me to photograph the artifacts within.
The museum is open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, except on Tuesdays.
