Apokryfo, Lofou, Cyprus - Explore & Book

"Apokryfo means ‘hidden’, and that’s exactly what this little gem of a boutique guesthouse is. Tucked away in the sleepy village of Lofou in the Troodos foothills, it’s the labour of love of the accomplished Cypriot architect Vakis Hadjikyriajou and his British wife Diana, a talented interior designer. In 2008 they bought a quartet of ramshackle stone houses, some without roofs, others overrun with pomegranate trees, and transformed them into 5 picture-perfect suites and 6 stylish houses for 4-9. Cosy interiors are design-mag gorgeous: every Cypriot rug and Rajasthani lamp fits perfectly. They’re grouped around a bijou turquoise pool, with herb beds along one side, a pergola along the other, and a white wall at the end for occasional film screenings. A candlelit restaurant flanks the pool and serves superb Cypriot dinners. Relax in the sun or shade under the pomegranate trees in the secluded three-tiered garden; the rooftop terrace above has lovely views across Lofou village. The location may seem random – midway between sea and mountains, 30-45 mins from both – but don’t be put off. The village is charmingly peaceful: cobbled lanes, stone houses, 3 restaurants and a church, all set amid undulating vine terraces. There are 2 wineries within 10 mins, beaches and castles a little further, and a small but excellent spa with sauna and steam room in the basement. Highs This is (as you may have gathered) our favourite hideaway in Cyprus: a place that works on every level, and relaxes you deeplyThe spread of mezes which the beaming chef Eleftheria delivered for dinner was the tastiest Cypriot meal of our tripThe Schoolmaster’s House would be great for a family of 4-6, and you could put the in-laws in the adjoining GatehouseIn cooler months, the candlelit court (with burning brazier) is truly romantic, especially after Loukas’ massageThere’s loads to explore nearby – forest trails and waterfalls, ancient ruins and Crusader castles – but it’s also a sublime spot to do nothing at all Lows Rates are a little higher than you might expect for the room size, but when you get there you’ll see whyThe pool is unheated and enclosed; but there are loungers and it's perfect for cooling off in the baking Cypriot summerIt’s not very toddler-friendly (though older children will be fine)It’s a shame the separate houses don’t have their own pools – space precludes that – but they each have a shady courtyard for alfresco dining (and it’s only a short hop to the main pool)" - Michael Cullen

We showed up last minute on a rainy day (didn’t stay at the hotel) and the staff were incredibly polite and helpful. They were happy to accommodate vegetarians with delicious local dishes like aubergines with feta, carrot soup, and Greek salad. The meat-free koupepia really stood out, and the meat eaters said the kleftiko was melting in their mouth. The fireplace made the whole atmosphere feel so cozy. It’s a perfect spot for a rural meal!

This was our fourth visit to Apokryfo - our first one was about 15 years ago, and it still feels as magical as ever. Lefteria, Christos, and the whole team always make us feel so welcome. It’s the perfect escape to peace and quiet, surrounded by beautiful traditional architecture and warm Cypriot hospitality. The food is absolutely outstanding, and finding a bottle of wine waiting in our room on arrival was such a thoughtful touch. Everything is done to a very high standard while keeping that authentic, homely feeling. We can’t wait to come back again!

A very poor stay THE GOOD The hotel itself is beautiful and in the charming town of Lofou. The room was newly renovated, beautifully decorated and clean. The staff were friendly and breakfast was very good. THE BAD We unfortunately had a very poor and extremely frustrating stay at the property. After a below average welcome, we were taken to our room where we immediately noticed that there was significant construction and renovation work going on throughout the hotel. The room door opposite us was being sanded, the balcony adjacent being resurfaced (drilling all day) and the reception being rebuilt after it was burned by a devastating fire which significantly impacted the town and surrounds. I complained immediately and was told that the hotel was very sorry and that the noise would “stop soon”. The next day, the same noise continued the entire day and then, to top things off, I discovered that the downstairs section of the hotel directly below my room had been booked out for a private event that evening which blasted music into our room until after 11PM. Again, when I complained, the hotel staff shrugged their shoulders and carried on. I wrote to management complaining about our experience. I’m yet to hear a response. What frustrates me the most is that the hotel knew about all of this ahead of our check in and decided to say nothing and rather continue to charge us full price as if nothing was going on… Overall, my advice would be to stay elsewhere in town.

We really enjoyed our stay in Apokryfo. It is a very family-like small hotel in the beautiful town of Lofou. The staff was extremly kind and making sure we have everything we needed. We arrived a bit late on our check in day and the staff even called us upon arrival to check in if we need dinner when we arrive - which we needed and it was delicious! The rooms are very clean and equipped with beautifully selected furniture. There have been some light construction work due to the fire which would have been nice to know upfront but the staff told us when we arrived.

Apokryfo, the ”hidden place” in greek, is a perfect name for the hotel.|After a demanding drive (for persons used to drive on the right side) we arrived in the beautiful village of Lofou in the mountains.|The hotel consisting of small buildings and rooms surrounding the beautiful garden and the pool will fill you with tranquility and peace…it is a magic place to just relax.|The pool felt cold, but after using the nice saunas in the spa, the temperature was just fine.|The one set dinner with local food recipes and a well filled wine cellar with local wines is just perfect. We stayed in one of the small houses and will strongly recommend You to do the same!|The area as well as the village was severely hit by a fire this summer, and unfortunately more than 20 buildings in the village were destroyed. Parts of the hotel was also hit by the fire and the on-going construction noice can not be avoided during work days – that is a pity, but will end in the future.|Based on all this, we would give Apokryfo 10 out 10 points, but then there are the cats!|We fully understand that the treatment of pets like cats and dogs in Greece, differ compared to how we treat them in the rest of Europe. Yes, there are cats on the premises and basically the same cats all week long doing no harm. What we can not accept is how they are haunted and chased by the personnel; some cats flieing high up in trees and some poor disabled and starving kittens who can not even run, trying to take cover where ever they can. The two poor severily disabled kittens are doing no harm, just trying their last effort available – begging for some food to survive to the next day. |And please, do not give us the ordinary explanations; ”we have been to the wet” (what You have not) or ”If we feed them, all the cats in the village will come”|Can this be done in a different way?|Yes, only 20 minutes drive to Pissouri Bay and the Columbia Beach resort, show us that they are doing things differently. They are taking care of the cats by feeding them, having a person once a week to check their health, taking females to the wet to avoid offsprings, signing up foster homes and what is upmost important; giving cats in need for eutanasia, a dignified end.|With almost no cost, this has created a remarcable positive respons from their visitors and improved their hotels brand significantly. You are missing all of this, just because of attitude.|Based on this, the final score will be only 5 points out of 10.

Schoolmaster's house is totally recommended. Comfortable, cozy, traditional yet with all needed modern amenities.

Having travelled to many interesting places around the world its always a pleasure to find a unique place that ticks all of the boxes. First, I want to mention the staff as without good people who work as a team, this guesthouse would not retain its lovely ambience. Kris the frontman is professional and courteous attending to all the guests needs, his warmth welcomes you in making you feel you want stay longer. The real delight was the food produced by the local chef Frieda. Her culinary skills stimulates the sensors. Your taste buds come alive with the dishes she produces from locally sourced meat, vegetables and fruit, of course, she add's her magic touch!||My husband and I stayed here for five nights from the 5th - 10th May. Luxury with stunning views from the roof terrace over Lofou Village. Spring time is a quieter time to stay which we appreciated. |Overall all of the staff made our stay enjoyable and very relaxing, we also enjoyed the Cypriot wines they had to offer. Most important, the housekeeping was off a high standard too.|To improve the Apokryfo Guesthouse:- We suggested to Kris, more loungers are needed with sun umbrellas on the roof terrace. |Stephanie & Michael Mead from Devon UK.
