Staying at the Apples' Riverhouse when I (we) ended up in Redding for the weekend was very much like suddenly remembering that I have casual friends in Redding, calling them up, and having them invite me to use their place as my own for the weekend.
My friends would say, "Sure, stay here when you're in town. Not a problem at all. We have a guest room, and a really nice backyard. Oh, you're bringing your bicycle(s) too? That's fine; we have a garage where you can keep them safe and dry."
What would probably happen next is that we'd avail ourselves of all of this hospitality: my friends would cook us eggs for breakfast, give us glasses of wine in the evening, and let us go about our business in between the breakfast and the wine.
And then, not ready to say goodbye to the weekend yet, we would probably go off on a long hike and not come back to collect our bicycles until nigh dark. When we finally made it back, my friends would be worried about us and would have already called around to try to find out whether we were okay.
All in all, quite nice. It's good to have old friends in Redding.
