"Joy Spence, a Jamaican-born chemist, became the first female master blender at Appleton Estate, the oldest rum distillery in Jamaica. She joined J.Wray and Nephew Ltd., the owner of Appleton Estate, as a chief chemist in 1981 and was appointed master blender in 1997 after learning from her predecessor Owen Tulloch. Spence has celebrated 40 years with the company." - Laura Dannen Redman

"Appleton Estate, owned by J.Wray and Nephew Ltd., is the oldest rum distillery in Jamaica. Master Blender Joy Spence has been with the estate for 40 years, creating various expressions of rum that reflect the spirit of Jamaica. The estate recently released a 15-year-old Black River Cask, which pays tribute to Jamaica's Black River. Spence is known for her innovative blends, such as the Appleton Estate 8-Year-Old Reserve Daiquiri and "The Joy" cocktail." - Kristin Braswell

10/10 experience! I would recommend this tour to everyone! This was the best customer service I’ve ever experienced in Jamaica and this is coming from a Jamaican. From the moment we drove in, being greeted by the security guard, to the registration process, to the tour itself, everyone was nice and welcoming. Bathrooms were clean, the property was well maintained. Will be coming here again. Hats off to the staff, y’all are amazing!

Brilliant tour of the Appleton rum estate and distillery, where we had the opportunity to learn about and examine various aspects of rum production, including the sampling of cane sugar and molasses, the latter of which was very sweet and sticky and tasted like liquorice flavoured treacle. We also had the opportunity to observe first hand how rum changes in colour, appearance, and volume as it ages over time, with the amount of rum that evaporates over this period being referred to as the "angels share". The estate also acknowledged its challenging history by erecting a statue to honour and commemorate those who were forced to work there as slaves. The day finishes off with a superb rum tasting session where we learn more about and appreciate the various brands. Various companies offer these excursions, we arranged ours with Couples Swept Away, definitely do this if a visit to Black River Safari and YS Falls are included as well!

the Appleton Estate Tour offers an immersive experience into the rich history and craftsmanship behind Jamaica’s world-renowned rum. Nestled in the scenic Nassau Valley, the tour takes visitors through the estate’s lush sugarcane fields, traditional copper pot stills, and aging house, I would love to visit again

Good Day Everyone, During one of my many visits to Jamaica I was taken to the Appleton Rum tour by a very nice AirBnB owner. The building is clean and sophisticated lighting is perfect and everything is pristine. Be prepared to drink rum for breakfast when you first arrive. The staff greeted me very politely with genuine smiles. Our tour guide was very considerate of the various age groups in our group The tour was very educational and informative. I don’t want to give away everything that goes on during the tour, but it was very nice and our tour guide even offered to take our pictures at some of the more popular photographic sites. The only drawback was the restaurant. The staff was very rigid and some of us wanted to eat at the restaurant which would not open for another 15 minutes so we were told while we hung out in the gift shop, the restaurant did not open on time many people return to their buses, and got back in their cars without experiencing the fine food we heard about which was a little disappointing that no one would make an announcement and say have a seat we will open in a few minutes Have a drink we’re running late but we will open in 15 minutes. They just let large groups of people walk away. The gift shop rum prices were the best deal I guess it’s because you’re getting it direct from Appleton. Worth the road trip. I would consider going again to experience the tour and the restaurant combined. Follow Mi on Google Maps to see my Jamaican Journeys😊

We visited this tour when we were on holiday in Negril. It was a long drive but well worth it. Although I first visited this place in 2015, we didn't get to do the tour since it was raining hard so I was so pleased to return nearly 10 years later. I was impressed with the professionalism at the start by completing the registration by tablet - started off the art in Jamaica! We were then welcomed with a rum cocktail. Our guide, Peter, was really knowledgeable, friendly and witty. We had tastings throughout from the sugar cane, sugar juice, molasses and the different types of rum at the end. This tour was well worthwhile!

My spouse and I visited Appleton and make me tell yuh… The whole tour was amazing, and our tour guide, Tiffany, was incredibly knowledgeable. I learned so much about Appleton’s history and have an even greater appreciation for the rum now. Overall, this was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it. The property was very clean , and they offered tastings of three different types of rum, along with fresh cold sugarcane which you could take as much of as you wanted! We also got to use the hand-operated machine at the sugar mill, and the sugarcane juice straight from the mill was so refreshing. Not to mention the organic molasses, get my iron in which was absolutely amazing. This tour is a must! A solid 10 out of 10. Mi nah lie, dis yah one sell off!

Google
Awesome tour. Building is beautiful, the food was even good in the restaurant. They would probably get more sales on the Joy Spence private select if they actually spoke about it. The only reason we knew was from a returning guest that got some before. Picked up a hand bottled one for myself.
