Best things to do in Hanoi, from hip to historical - SilverKris

"A hands-on cooking class experience that begins with a guided market tour to select fresh meat, fish, vegetables and ingredients, followed by a return to a cooking base to prepare Vietnamese dishes step-by-step — from pho to green papaya salad and spring rolls — with an opportunity to sit down and enjoy the meal with a glass of Vietnamese wine; participants typically receive a summary and recipe sheet at the end of the day." - James Wong

This Vietnamese cooking class was one of the highlights of our time in Hanoi! We started with a fascinating market trip, learning how to choose fresh local ingredients and getting a real feel for everyday Vietnamese food culture. Back in the kitchen, we cooked five traditional dishes, all clearly explained and hands-on, with plenty of tips and stories along the way. The instructor was warm, knowledgeable, and made everything easy to follow—even for beginners. The food we made was absolutely delicious, and we left feeling confident we could recreate the dishes at home. Great atmosphere, great food, and a truly authentic experience from start to finish. We highly recommend this class to anyone visiting Hanoi who loves food and wants a deeper cultural experience! 🍜🥬✨

We had a great cooking class with Emmy! We cooked several different dishes. It was very interactive and I felt like I learned a lot. Emmy also thoroughly answered everyone’s questions both about the food we were making as well as other local dishes. She spoke fantastic English as well. I can definitely recommend!

I’ve been eating assiduously across Hanoi. And the food we made ourselves at Apron Up was amongst the best I’ve had in the 6 times I’ve been to Vietnam. I’m thinking of the grilled meatballs, the pho bo, the fried spring rolls, the egg coffee. If they could, in 3 hours, teach us newbies to make these so deliciously, they must be doing something right. It was all easy, breezy, fun, not stressful or difficult, with obviously a small army of hardworking staff keeping everything clean and humming, while still letting us feel like we really were doing the cooking ourselves. I enjoyed learning from Emmy. In the kitchen setting, this is was actually one of my opportunities to have a conversation with a young Hanoian to learn how they feel about life and their future in Hanoi.

Had an amazing experience today at the Apronup Cooking Class in Hanoi. Vee was a wonderful teacher, very good English and knowledgeable about the ingredients and cooking techniques. Vee had no problem answering questions that I had which would help me prepare this food with ingredients that we have available in NZ. The market experience was great and the best bit .... sampling what was made. Tip for those doing the course, dont eat for hours before hand. Highly recommend!!

We had a cooking class with Bella (Binh) and had such a lovely experience. We were lucky enough to be the only ones in the class! We learnt a lot about life in Vietnam, culture, food, and also amazing cooking skills that we will cherish forever. We can’t wait to share the love for food from Vietnam back home, and each time we will remember the lovely experience we had with Bella. Thank you Bella for an amazing cooking class!

Learn to cook like you actually live here. Perla doesn't mess around. Within ten minutes of meeting her, I was elbows-deep in a chaotic Vietnamese market, haggling for herbs I couldn't pronounce and dodging motorbikes like a local. Not some sanitized "cooking experience" where everything's pre-chopped and waiting. We made pho from scratch. Bun cha that'll ruin every restaurant version for you forever. Spring rolls tight enough to make your Vietnamese grandma proud (if you had one). Papaya salad with the perfect amount of bite. And egg coffee so ridiculously good I'm genuinely angry no one told me about it sooner. Perla drops flavor secrets like classified intel. Techniques her family's been hoarding for generations are yours now. And you walk away with a recipe book so you can flex on everyone back home.
