At the start of a recent three week trip to Europe, my wife and I visited Venice for the first time. Both of us had long studied its history and I did a great deal of research to find the ideal spot in which to stay during our five nights. We wanted a place that would prove romantic and atmospheric, peaceful and cozy, elegant, sophisticated and fun. The Aqua Palace deserves top marks for being all these things and for the truly kind, gentle nature of the entire staff. ||From the moment we arrived, by water taxi, just after dark, we were entranced. The entire hotel is beautifully, artistically appointed. Not only was our "canal view" suite romantic and soothing, but on the floor outside our door, there was a terrific sitting area and just off it, a large balcony overlooking the canal. We included the hotel breakfast in our stay and I can't recommend this option enough. Of all the hotel breakfasts I have ever enjoyed, those provided at the Aqua Palace are my favorites. The small dining room is cozy and charming, the array of buffet selections both diverse and manageable. The serving staff was utterly charming as well and our breakfasts proved a great way to start our very adventurous days. ||Early March might be the most serene time of the year in Venice. Blissfully, we managed to avoid the crowding (overcrowding?) about which one reads so much. We were able to explore everywhere and the hotel's location was ideal, somehow both tucked and quiet, while at the same time so near to much of what we wished to see. In fact, high waters prevented a water taxi pickup on the day we departed for the airport, but we were an easy five minute walk (with luggage) from the taxi stand at the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge. ||The entire staff of the Aqua Palace proved patient and helpful, and special mention must be made of the bar manager, Lello. I love bars and the hotel's "Q Bar" is a great place to spend time. Lello is a master of his craft - both in terms of mixing delicious drinks AND providing nourishing conversation. If he ever wants to suggest a restaurant to you, absolutely take him up on the offer! He might even walk you over to introduce you to the restaurant's owner, as he did for me. It led to one of my favorite meals I have ever had.||I imagine Venice can be an expensive place to visit. Certainly this impression was born out as I researched the top hotels in the city. So, I feel truly fortunate to have discovered the Aqua Palace because to me, it represented an incredible value. |My only quibble (and it's minor): the oddly situated flat screen television in our room. Of course, placing it ANYWHERE in that magnificent suite would have felt odd. This is Venice - Who wants to turn on the television??||Other than perhaps a night or two somewhere on the Lido, the Aqua Palace Hotel is the ONLY place I ever wish to stay in Venice and I hope I will get to stay there again soon.
