On the Grid : Aquarium GEOMAR

"Ocean research has a long tradition in Kiel with outstanding international findings in the late 19th Century. The Geomar Institute operates world-wide in all ocean basins, specialising in climate dynamics, marine ecology, biogeochemistry, and ocean floor dynamics and circulation. The Aquarium of the Institute is small with only 16 basins with species from all around the world, but nevertheless worth a visit. Highlight of the aquarium is without a doubt the seals, which can also be observed in their external basin all year long. Open daily: 9am – 6pm" - Carina Hoffmann & Petrina Meier

It's a small aquarium, but really great! There are some interesting sea creatures, and it's quite amazing how many they have managed to put into such a small area; they've made great use of the space! Outside, you can see seals free of charge, and at 14:30 every day, they get fed. Really cute sea doggos 🥰

Very affordable, they also have a discount for students. But it's a small aquarium so you can go through everything in about 20-30ish minutes. You can see the seals from outside while waiting as well.

For a 3 Euro admission fee, this is an amazing small aquarium featuring a few species from the indo pacific region. It's conviniently located close to the cruise port of Kiel, I visited on my own instead of booking an excursion, walked around and found this aquarium and the Old Botanical Garden

Small and nice aquarium with a very decent entrance fee. You can watch their seals from outside for free. We were excited about the small entrance fee until we understood how small the place actually is. We were through after 20min.

Very disappointing experience – rude staff and poor management We had a very unpleasant experience at Geomar Aquarium in Germany. The staff was incredibly rude, especially one arrogant man at the entrance. We were not allowed inside because we were told there were “too many people.” When I asked how long the wait would be, he said he didn’t know. After pushing for a more specific answer, he finally said “10–15 minutes – depends when people leave.” We decided to wait with our two small children, sitting quietly on chairs by the entrance. A few minutes later, the same man came outside for a cigarette and shamelessly blew smoke in the direction of our kids. When I pointed out that 15 people had already left and we were only four, he still refused to let us in. Then, in the most disrespectful tone, he told me, “You can just leave if you’re about to cry.” Completely unacceptable and unprofessional behavior. As for the aquarium itself – once we finally got in – it was extremely small. You can walk through the entire thing in 5 minutes. The seals outside were kept in a cramped area with disgusting green water, which looked neglected and unhygienic. Absolutely not worth the price, the wait, or the stress caused by such rude and arrogant staff. Save your money and your nerves – go elsewhere.

A very small inexpensive aquarium that you can bring the kids to for nice relaxing 30 minutes or so. 3 euros per person is super affordable. There is also a nice line up of food and beverage stalls along the boardwalk and you can enjoy a nice stroll or bike ride down the way.
