A beautifully preserved piece of local history that is worth a visit if you’re in town. I had to look up the meaning of it on Google because I couldn’t find the sign.

A historically significant marae. This site is one of the best-preserved examples of a "marae" (gathering place) and "koutu" (royal court) on the island, dating back to 1350 AD!! The area features a n arrangement of stones, with an informative plaque providing historical context. What remains is limited and the site is well-maintained with carpark at the front.

This was different then I was expecting. Arai Te Tonga is as described the precursor to what we would call a Marae. It would have been better if there was more information on site but google it. I believe the Marae Atea as we have in Aotearoa is the evolution of what is here. Definitely a place to visit and understand for Māori or anyone visiting Rarotonga.

The information board is sadly missing (as at 29 June 2025), so recommend reading about the marae before visiting.

One of the few places on the island that holds true historical significance. You can visit any time and read the info boards, or find a local/guide to tell you about the history of the site. Sadly, post-Christianity, these sites have been left to decay and their stories are being lost.
