If you happen to find yourself driving between Oklahoma City and Dallas, approximately the time the kids are asking "how many more miles?" and they need to go to the bathroom, you need to stretch your legs, and everyone could use a snack to break up the trip - Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies is located in the perfect spot. You'll find it kinda-sorta in the middle between the two cities, one block off to the West side of I-35, situated in an old Sinclair gas station and convenience store. There is nothing else around and it's camouflaged by trees and mountains from the highway while driving 70 mph, so be careful if you blink because you might miss it.
At some time in your life I'm sure you've had a fried apple or cherry pie from McDonald's. Now imagine if these pies were homemade, assembled right in front of you, with fresh ingredients, three times the size but still easy to hold in your hands, and actually delicious - would you stop to check it out? You bet you would!
With the exception of a freezer of ice cream truck style treats, the only thing they sell is fried pies. But boy do they do them right. You'll find every flavor from cherry to apple to peach, pineapple, blackberry, etc. both with and some without sugar, and cream pies too. They also offer savory fried pies such as bacon, egg, and cheese; "pizza style"; "TexMex style"; etc. I've never had the savory pies, but based on appearances, I'm sure they are great too.
The pies are fried, but they aren't crunchy like most fried foods. The dough around the pie is relatively soft and moist, definitely not like the dried up pie crust Aunt Mary made last Thanksgiving using the grocery freezer section pie crust that you left on your plate when dessert was finished. Oh no, you'll want to eat every bite of the crust just as much as you'll want to eat all the filling.
In addition to the fresh pies, they also have a freezer where you can purchase cold fried pies and throw them in your cooler to eat later when you get home - or you can eat them when the kids are begging for another treat before you arrive at the next stop.
