Yelp
OK -- first off, I want to voice appreciation for staff of The Arc, or Arc The Hotel. They were friendly at the desk, check-in was speedy, the doorman (who is from South Sudan and he is excellent). Nobody working for any organization wants to have the place they're working in run down the pole. But here's the headline: Not Ready for Prime Time.
We took a night here with a discount via Travel Zoo. The one review on Yelp reflects the fact that the hotel is very new -- not sure when it opened, but reading the hotel website you learn that this was a former GWU guest Inn, that has obviously now been turned into a hotel.
So, here's the good: The rooms look like they've been renovated on a very modern model -- as one reviewer noted, 50 inch flat screen on the wall, nice furnishings, refrigerator, and in our case the bathroom seemed fine -- brand new walk-in shower, and the vanity had ample space. Hot water came on instantly (there are some hotels we have been in where that is not the case). King size bed was excellent and comfortable. There's kind of a cute thing going where they offer a number of different pillows (organic, down, etc) for the asking.
Now the bad: As one reviewer remarked, when we were about to get to sleep we realized that there was no top sheet -- just the incredibly warm and thick winter-purposed comforter. Surprising that housekeeping would not put something as obvious as a sheet below the comforter. A call to the front desk -- waited about 25 minutes -- another call to the front desk, and finally a sheet arrived, which we installed. Bizarre. There was a fitted sheet below the comforter, just no top sheet on the bed or anywhere in the room.
Also mentioined by a reviewer -- the Chromecast system in the room did not work properly....the code didn't work, so we were limited to regular local and CNN/MSNBC, etc. WiFi strength however appeared to be excellent.
Another reviewer said there was no heat in the hotel -- this was in October. On our visit, the opposite -- the hallway was, if anything, TOO warm.
Now some additional thoughts -- I'll try to post some photos. This hotel clearly should not have opened when it did. It's obvious there are some glaring issues that will have to be addressed by contractors who did this renovation. An otherwise stylish long lamp below the TV had fallen off its mount. ON/OFF switches on the wall were damaged. Wall finish was poor and in the corner of our particular room, there was sign of leakage or previous damage -- unclear if it had been repaired. The fuse box, which appeared to be original to the room pre-renovation, was swung open. The elevators show signs of damage, scratches -- and generally just look very old, not like one would expect from a fully renovated hotel ready for business. Downstairs, the front of the hotel (which is tucked off the street in DC's Foggy Bottom neighborhood) is OK, but there is hardly any room for cars to pull up. A garage area just ahead of the entrance looks horrendous (though the pass-through takes one conveniently across to 25th street). To top things off, there is a $51 valet and parking charge that is tacked on to the room bill (and that's before tax).
It was unclear to us whether the hotel restaurant was actually open -- breakfast is offered but it appears to be served in a bar area near the entrance. As I write this, I noticed that Notti 824, the restaurant, is listed on Yelp as OPENING SOON (see: https://dc.eater.com/2018/11/2/18057070/notti-824-foggy-bottom-modern-design
All in all, we intended to spend only one night downtown (3rd anniversary overnight) so we're only out the price of a discount one evening stay. But have to observe that this is a place that clearly opened ahead of when it should have, and will be grappling with some significant problems in months ahead.
