On the Grid : City Hall

"You may recognize the Pasadena City Hall building if you watch Parks & Recreation (it was filmed here). The Pasadena City Hall building has been featured in many TV Shows, films, and architectural books. It is a beauty. Built nearly 100 years ago (in 1927) it is vaguely reminiscent of the Duomo in Florence. It overlooks a wide open plaza and beautiful gardens. If you stop by you will almost certainly see a wedding photoshoot or a limousine let out high schoolers in tuxedos posing before their prom on the tile steps in front of this epic monument." - OSSO

I just got a $74 ticket for parking on the street when there’s literally no signs anywhere that indicate that you need a permit for overnight parking. Why do cities always have to be so damn greedy? How about a $15 ticket or maybe a warning? OR PUT UP SOME GOD DAMN SIGNS! There’s also homeless people everywhere downtown and at nearly every freeway offramp. Ready to buy your $1M - $2M home?

It's just so cute and small. Everyone is really nice too. It is a bit out of date.. maybe bc it's so small, its weird that we have to print so much paper to give them . For instance I needed a sign permit..instead of emailing them the information I needed to print it all out and bring to them. Then she asked for one more picture. So she handed it all back to me. I then had to come back with everything. I just wish more businesses could be more eco-friendly.

Great staff. I went to pull permits for one of my projects. Very helpful. The fees overall in the city of Arcadia are not bad. Just remember you need a business license to perform work in the city. The inspector are usually pretty good and helpful in my project.

I have been here several times for business, and I am very touched every time. Every staff here is so enthusiastic, responsible, caring, and the translators are also so dedicated. Thank you so so so much!

I’m truly fascinated by the amount of wild peacocks around this neighborhood. Saw a few along Madre at California.

Yelp
2100 new laws get passed every year. Cities like Arcadia somehow believe we have to know them all and they are entirely immune to being logical and putting up signs. Case in point: I was helping a friend with her moving (a hellish experience to begin with) I have to pay a $65.00 "overnight parking" ticket. This, despite none of the neighbors parking their cars on the street getting ticketed, AND despite my friend who has lived there for years not knowing anything about any overnight parking regulations, AND despite she had roommates and NONE of them ever got ticketed. Adding inconvenience to injury, heightening my anger, and tainting what should have been an easy, restful, pet sit gig in Los Angeles, is the fact that on Saturday for 30 minutes (before I gave up) the Arcadia ticket pay-site froze "processing" my card information. I could not "refresh". I was warned, or it might charge me double. Which forced me to go through VM hell. I TRIED TO CALL THE NUMBER ON THE CITATION. JUST GOT VOICEMAIL. WORSE, I KEPT PUSHING THE BUTTON, IT TOLD ME TO PUSH FOR THE DEPARTMENT AND IT WOULDN'T TAKE IT. I HAD TO HANG UP AND CALL AGAIN. THIS TIME IT TOOK IT BUT INSTEAD OF GETTING SOMEONE I GOT MORE VM THAT TOLD ME IT WAS AFTER BUSINESS HOURS. IT IS NOON! MUST BE NICE TO HAVE SUCH A CUSHY JOB THAT YOU CAN BE CLOSED ON A SATURDAY WHILE THOUSANDS SWEAT OUT MENIAL JOBS 24-7, AUTHORITIES GET THE LUXURY TO CLOSE ON WEEKENDS. NOW I WILL HAVE TO WAIT TILL MONDAY AND THEY WILL SAY "OH, YOU ARE NOW LATE AND HAVE TO PAY A LATE PENALTY. SUCH A SCAM!!! AND THESE TICKET AGENCIES MIGHT EVEN BE A FRONT FOR THE MAFIA!!! (it's a thing, do the research) An hour wasted. Day has been ruined. I am warning all of my journalist, video production, acting and writing friends NEVER to do business with Arcadia. I give all of you the same warning. Do not shop there. Do not live there. Do not do business with them. They are actors of bad faith and every red flag imaginable is in plain view and proudly being flown. Today I got a call from City Hall FINALLY returning my call after the fact and the destruction of my Saturday. I knew the call would be completely unproductive. Instead of explaining why they give out overnight parking tickets in secluded cul de sacs that have zero warning signs. They explained it is a city ordinance and it is marked on a sign on the entrance and exits of the freeway. They expect you to know this and to seek out the sign in the jumble of signs in the 5 seconds you have entering or exiting a freeway. More to the point, the law obviously exists, as most things, because the wealthy are so worried about the homeless parking in their neighborhoods. If the city REALLY wanted people to know, they would issue warning tickets. The fact that they don't, means this is really a covert cash grab by the city as well as a homeless deterrent. Because logic only points in that direction. There is no other reason that this law exists except for fear and hatred of the homeless. Once again I urge you not to do any business with Arcadia.

Yelp
Like any other government office, the staff here is hit and miss. Some staff members here are helpful, polite and professional - others clearly hate their jobs and are there just for the paycheck. The cashiers get the job done, and usually aren't rude, but they aren't overly helpful or polite either. The mayor's assistant, Mary, is the BEST employee at City Hall! She is by far the most professional person there, and is a huge asset to the community.

Yelp
Great service in the building department. The easiest place to pull permits. Their staff is the greatest, they have really good service!

Yelp
Terrible customer service this woman was so mean to me and look me straight in my eyes and told me she was trying to help me. I said how are trying to help me when your talking to me like a child and no way shape or form are you trying to help me how? Jesus there a pandemic going on. I understand that I don't live your community and you don't see many my kinda but do you treat everyone like this. I ask the two gentlemen should I just leave after she went to her supervisor which I believe she said she was one as well and we know how that conversation go on in the back black guy guilty which make since because she had know plan to help me when she said we see this all the time, how my ticket was dropped I didn't know I was gonna still be charged for you doing paper work for 115 dollars wtf

Yelp
A very efficiently-run City Hall that is also soon to get a brand new home. There is tons of free and helpful information here in the lobby, including the local newspapers and city newsletters.

Yelp
I mean no one like coming to City Hall because usually that means your here to spend money (...or get married) lol I had to renew my annual overnight parking permit. $84 for the year of 2015. Or get caught without one parking on the street between 2am-5am and get a $55 ticket. (Not worth it if you ask me) I was in and out in less then 5 minutes.

Yelp
Who's in charge of alerting residents to the major event and road closures today, Saturday Nov 18? We're new to the area and had no idea that this was going on, and our street is blocked with re-routed traffic and we're receiving multiple guests today who are coming from out of town. No one directing traffic in front of the high school at El Monte and Duarte means that only 3-4 cars get to turn left even when there's no one coming from the other direction. Ludicrous! Supposedly this has been a city event for decades (I still don't really know what's going on except for that there's marching bands) which makes it that much more absurd that the city doesn't have this wired by now. Very disappointed and amazed at the lack of organization.

Yelp
I would like to take the time to thank Christine and Joann at the permit counter. I have to pull permits quite often and I never look forward to it. But with these two awesome ladies I look forward to pulling permits and visiting with them. They are very friendly and very quick and efficient with the process. Thank you ladies for being so awesome every time I come in.

Yelp
On July 5th 2011, I drove my son to meet and interview City's Mayor for his Boy Scout merit badge class. What a service we received! We entered city's council meeting room and asked a staff for the direction to mayor's office. He could have told us where to go but he stopped what he was doing (setting up the room for the council meeting that night) and he walked us to the city manager's office. This was just a beginning of an excellent service! Staff at city manager's office was very friendly and extremely customer focused. Staff offered water to drink as soon as we entered the office (It was a very hot day). As I was waiting for my son to interview the mayor, I asked for a map of Arcadia and a staff quickly went outside office to get one. She could have just told me where I can find the map! She returned shortly and said "We are out of a map but I think I have one." She searched her desk and offered her own map of city. I could have return later for a map but she went out of her way to look for the map and offered her own! It was very obvious staff at Arcadia city is service oriented and customer focused. I hope other public and government agency staff will Visit and Model from Arcadia City Hall staff. THANK YOU!
